Moose Creek Murder Suspect

Daren Christopher Abbey, the self proclaimed skinhead nazi, killed Dustin Kjersem. Well, check out a bit more about this psychopath. Turns out he attacked another man with a knife in 2011 and got his ass handed to him as the target of his hate crime (a world champion boxer) knocked him flat on his a** and required medical care.

Firehole vs. Cold Spring

Aside from the vertiginous hike and putting on your skis, is Firehole that much more dangerous than Cold Spring? I’m going in January and plan to hit the first two runs off Headwaters. I’ve never experienced a triple-black, so I’m trying to gauge whether the steepness and exposure are comparable since the two runs are adjacent. Thanks for your help.

Best Ski In/Sky Out Value at Big Sky Recommendations?

Looking to schedule first ski trip to Big Sky for late March/early April. Ideally we prefer ski in/ski out (or a short walk to lifts is acceptable).

Originally was planning to stay at The Wilson, since it appears to be a beautiful property, but that's a shuttle ride away. At Big Sky, our top choice right how would be The Huntley, which has free breakfast and is reasonably priced (around $375/night). Any other recommendations for a better accommodation?

Our criteria include:
- Ski in/ski out (or short walk to lift)
- Breakfast included is a plus
- Fitness center
- Updated rooms/decor
- Ski storage/valet is a plus
- Restaurants on-site or walkable

Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

Snowmaking?

https://www.bigskyresort.com/current-conditions - Looking at the live cams here. Looks like the snowmaking is already going..... Right? I know the natural stuff fell, but also looks like they have some equipment spraying up there. How are we on timing, about right? early? Says something about expectations that the cold is here to stay. If you can't surmise, I have an early trip planned.... cmon snow! Any locals input much appreciated. Thanks

What are the best lifts at Big Sky to stay warm?

Debating between a trip to Vail/Telluride/Big Sky - my wife is an intermediate snowboarder and gets cold easily, so she is very excited about the idea of Gondolas.

I noticed in some pictures that it looks like some of the regular chair lifts at Big Sky have some wind barrier built in - is this for some/all?

Great Grey Owl up Buck's Ridge

North America's largest owl spotted a few miles south of Big Sky. One of those moments I wish I had a better camera lens (...also I could be wrong on species, humble me).

Where to stay

Hi All,

I tried my best to look through here to get my answer but I haven’t seen anything.

Will be 7 of us, no wives or kids.

I assume staying in town is the best option for us, more room for less $.

My question is in the event of a powder day, are the shuttle busses/our rental car a reliable option to get to the lifts or is it better to be at the mountain base?

Big sky ski pass

I'm going to big sky to ski for 3 days. And that will likely be the only time we ski in the 24/25 season. Ikon pass vs getting a 3 day pass on the big sky website?

November, big sky, what am I missing from this list?

Aside from skiing (very end of November), and I realize it is early. I’ve got a couple bucket list items. Anything I’m missing?

Jake horseback rides

River house bbq

Ousel falls hike

Scissor bills

Pinky g’s

Fly fishing - any guide recs (2 or 3hr tours)

Skiing with young kids is the primary focus but if we get totally skunked or they get bored would be nice to have some alternatives.

Storm warning

See the weather service is saying potential for 6 to 16 inches at elevation and some lower as well. When typically does it start to matter? Seems a little early to believe this snow would hang around, but curious the locals take?

Best Accommodation Options Near Big Sky for a Group of Six - No Car Rental

Me and 5 friends are planning a trip to Big Sky, Montana for the beginning of January. We’re flying out from Philadelphia and aren’t familiar with Montana or the West in general. We’re looking for recommendations on the best places to stay for a group of six that don’t require renting a car. Staying on the resort is a bit too expensive for us, so we’re hoping to find accommodations nearby that offer shuttle service to Big Sky. Any input is appreciated!

More Music From Southwestern Montana?

Yip…this is the second to last song from the Taylor Fork Sessions.

It’s called “The Shadow Of A Pine” and it was written, recorded, and filmed right here in my home of southwest Montana.

I have been so moved by the local support down here and Big Sky is well among them.

Thank y’all for your kind words of encouragement thus far, I’ll keep makin’ music up here as long I breathe.

Darkly yours,

  • Buff

Whitewater inn housing?

Signing up for employee housing to work at the resort, does anyone have pictures of the whitewater inn campus or know what it’s about? There’s really no info on the website about it, and I can’t imagine they’re just going to put employees in unmodified hotel rooms. Has anyone lived there before??

Thanks in advance!
