This week or next

I was planning to come this Friday, but with the warm temperatures, I’m concerned it will be all ice. Do you think I should take the risk and wait until next Friday, hoping the snowstorm this weekend will improve conditions?

Group Lesson Insight

I'm coming to Big Sky MLK weekend with some friends and husband and planning to take a group lesson. I'd say I'm a level 5, very comfortable on any green and comfortable on easy blues. My husband is also taking a lesson, but is much more advanced....just wants help getting better on blacks and moguls. Anyways, just looking for any insight on what to expect with a group lesson? Neither of us have ever done a group lesson (I did a private lesson 5 years ago in Breck, and he did one as a kid), so just trying to get an idea of what we're in for. I really want to get comfortable with any blue and maybe an easy black (if that exists).

Also, any particular runs that y'all recommend based on skill level? Thanks for any tips, looking forward to our trip!

Snow coverage?

Planning on coming up this Sunday and Monday. Last time I was in big sky was five or six years ago. Is it worth coming? Wondering about snow coverage? I see snow in the forecast crossing my fingers…

Where to find private instructors?

I am visiting for the first time with family and we will be staying on the mountain at a ski in and ski out home. My family is all experienced skiers but my fiancé has only ski’d once before (with me last year) and barely got the basics down over 2-3 days with me instructing her. I wanted to hire a ski instructor to help her out, but private lessons are very costly at a resort ski school and allow up to 5 people. Plus those are all certified instructors at a full time school at resort rates.

I just need a private instructor for my fiancé and I. Are there private instructors that I can hire at a daily rate that maybe do this as a side job and is not an official ski school? Maybe if there’s a freelance version of ski instructors I can hire someone for a few days to just come ski with us and give us pointers to help her gain some confidence.

Thanks all!

IKON 3 Day Pass Big Sky availability before purchasing

Going for the first time for 3 Days skiing with family Feb. 23-26 and IKON pricing is $150 cheaper than buying it direct from Big Sky. Crazy; I don’t figure that out. But it says I have to reserve it for Big Sky but doesn’t seem a way to check first before buying the IKON 3 day pass. I don’t want to buy IKON 3 day pass and then find out it’s not reservable. What’s the chances it’s sold out for IKON folks or do I call Big Sky or IKON if they pick up to find out. Any help appreciated for this IKON/Big Sky newbie. Thanks

Visiting this weekend but not skiing. What to do?

My wife and I are coming to Big Sky this weekend (Dec 6th - Dec 9th) but we aren’t planning on skiing. We plan to drive to Yellowstone one day but don’t have many other plans. Looking for recommendations on restaurants, activities, etc.

Residential Lifts/Trails

Hey everyone! Me and my family will be coming to Big Sky in 2 weeks. We booked a place in the residential area serviced by White Otter. The website looks like that lift is not currently operating not are the trails back to that area open.

Will these be open when we come? We really liked the ski in/out we were going to have. How are the shuttles to/from the base area if the lift isn't open?

Big Sky Resort -> BZN without a car on a Sunday afternoon?

Just booked a trip to ski in Big Sky for late January. Really excited! I'll be meeting my parents at the airport then we'll drive to the resort.

At the end of the trip, my parents' flight is super early in the morning, like 10 AM. The cheapest and most convenient flight for me leaves Sunday in the afternoon, and I was wondering if it'd be possible for me to ski an extra half-day or so then take some sort of transit back directly to the airport on Sunday.

As far as I can tell, I can take a bus to the Walmart in Bozeman, but there's no weekend transit service for the last leg to the airport. Is there something I'm missing? Would it be too much to count on taking ride share from the Walmart to the airport on a Sunday afternoon?

Thanks in advance, all else fails I just ride in early and sit in the airport all morning.

Best place to learn Backflip

I spent a lot of time over the summer on the trampoline perfecting my backflip, and can even do one on flat ground now.

Want to send my first one on skis, but don’t know the best spot. Few people recommended the windlip in the bowl, but since it’s early season it’s not rlly there just yet.

Any other spots?

Thanksgiving weekend

I am planning an impromptu trip this thanksgiving weekend, fly in Thursday and fly out Sunday. Ski for two-three days depending on flights (gonna break the bank!) Any idea if the tram will be open for skiing during that time? They announced that it will be open for sightseeing only on opening day which is Wednesday.

Condo for rent

Unfortunately I’m not able to use the week of my time Share at The Lake Condos on the hill. Dates for it are Feb 8th-15th. It sleeps 10-12 comfortably, has 2 bathrooms, in unit laundry, fully stocked with everything for cooking and meals including a bbq. Make it nice don’t need to rely on restaurants and bars for meals and drinks. The complex has a brand new private pool and hot tubs. Within walking distance of the Mountain mall but also has a shuttle pickup right in the parking lot which will take you to many places on the mountain or even down to all the grocery store, shops, restaurants, and watering holes down in the meadow. The Rock and Tips Up are both really cool local places. It’s $2000 for 7 nights. Any further questions please feel free to let me know along with requests for Pictures.

Opening day terrain

From the resort :

🚨 OPENING TERRAIN ALERT 🚨

With 43" of November snow (179% of average!), and stellar snowmaking, we're dropping the rope on 1,200+ acres next week. Four lifts, 50 runs, two terrain parks, and Tram scenic rides await. See you November 27 for one of North America's biggest terrain openings! 🎿

Early Season Conditions

Hello all, My wife and daughter have a free place to stay on the mountain over Thanksgiving weekend and are considering visiting from out of state. I lived in Big Sky in the late 90s and remember early season conditions were often horrible until late Dec.

Can any locals tell me if there will be enough green and blue terrain open to make a trip from out of state worth it? Thanks!

Ikon pass vs tickets including tram?

Planning a trip for a week for the family. The cost of 4 day Ikon pass for family of 4 is about $1450 after rebate which doesn't incldue tram access. The cost of 4 of 5 ticket from the resort is about $1900 with tram access. What is the cost per ride in the beginning of April? Am I better off to just get the Ikon pass and pay the per ride fee as needed?

Looking for some shred buddies Dec 26th-Dec 30th

Heyoo, if anybody is interested in joining up for a few days, I'd love to split a spot. Just trying to get my ski on and have a few brews to get warmed up for the season.

Big Sky is what made me fall in love with skiing after I visited about 4 years ago, and I've been looking for a good time to come back. Shoot a message if you're interested or have any questions!!

Thanksgiving Conditions

Looking at driving up from Salt Lake for Thanksgiving late Wednesday night. Two questions:

  1. What will the road be like from West Yellowstone? Is this a really bad idea to drive up at night? I have an AWD with 3pmsf tyres.
  2. What is the expected number of runs/areas to be open? Will it be the white ribbon of death or decent terrain?

Lesson options

We’re bringing a skiing novice with us this year. The lessons offered through the resort site are $400 and don’t include lift tickets or rentals. Can anyone recommend some other lesson options at Big Sky that are a little more affordable for a beginner?

Thanks!

I am driving from bozeman to big sky on Nov 30th in a 2014 nissan versa (front wheel drive) in about 2 weeks (late nov) wondering if I can do this safely with the snow condions? Really just need to make it to town center but eventually want to make it to the resort.
