Cost to build home

Hi! We are moving back east to be closer to family, but we are on the fence over buying or building. Can anyone give me an idea of what it cost for you to have the home built in total including things like land development, permits, fees, and plans? We are thinking maybe 1500 sq ft for reference, we don’t need a lot of house :)

Would you move to Beaufort again if you had the option?

Hey!

I am a 23 year old guy. I fell in love with Charleston initially, so I got rid of my place, packed up all my things, but decided against moving there and am staying with family in NC. Charleston is too big for me, too much traffic, and im not comfortable with the growth predictions over the next 10 years. I much prefer a little bit less hectic pace of life. I spend most of my time out on the water, at coffee shops, and enjoying the beach

What are your thoughts on Beaufort? Its a new area to me but it still feels very "low country" from the pictures. Im planning to head down there to check it out at some point. Would you move again, why or why not?

Can someone explain something to me?

I haven’t lived here long and I’ve heard of this very wealthy, extravagant area called Habersham. I’ve never been,so I don’t know if that’s an exaggeration or not. Apparently they sell tickets to this Holiday event they do where everyone gets to look at their huge houses lit up with Christmas lights and all kinds of other holiday activities. My question is, if this community is so wealthy, why are they going around town asking for MASSIVE donations if they charge $60 to attend?

Looking for local help

Hey yall. I'm searching for some time sensitive assistance with q utility bill for a very close friend. They were in s horrible car accident leaving them disabled. A lawsuit was filed but on true lawsuit fashion, no one really knows when she will see any sort of payout. As a result, I have been helping with necessary bills and expenses but this time I'm just simply unable to help. I've contacted the united way but they were unable to assist. I've only lived here for a short time so I'm not privy to local charities and things like that. From what I've learned, this town is very tight-knit and everyone seems eager to help out their fellow neighbors. Those charities/people are who I'm looking for. I did my best to negotiate with the utility company but they aren't budging.

To remain anonymous because everybody seems to know everybody here, I've left out major details in this post because if my friend knew I was on her asking, she would flip. Lol.

Can anyone offer me any insight on where I might go for help? I'll gladly provide more in depth details via DM. This post is not me asking for cash or a handout or anything else of that nature. I'm simply exhausting all options before this utility company turns off their services and I'm unable to get it back.

Thanks for any and all information and thanks for reading!

Considering a Move - Seeking Insights from Local Families

Hi everyone! My family (my husband, 40M; myself, 35F; and our kids, ages 6 and 3) is considering moving to the Beaufort area, and I’d love to hear from local families about your experiences. We’re drawn to Beaufort’s natural beauty, historic charm, and sense of community but want to make sure our feelings are accurate. Here’s a bit about our background and what we’re looking for:

Our Background:
We’re both from SC and met in Charleston in 2014 before moving to Fort Mill in 2016. While Fort Mill has been positive for schools, the rest of the town feels “off” for us - we don't think it's an overall good fit.

What We Like in Fort Mill:

  • Education: Fort Mill is known for being a top school district in the state. Our daughter loves her elementary school, and we love her nature-based after-school program through the local greenway. Our son’s daycare is wonderful (though it’s costly). Both of their schools are within a mile of our house and we wholeheartedly trust the teachers and administrations at both.

What We're Looking to Leave Behind: Please chime in if you see some of this in Beaufort.

  • No Community Center: Fort Mill lacks a true “town center,” and small businesses struggle while chain stores and new shopping malls pop-up everywhere. There's no effort to make commerce easier for small businesses (vs. Rock Hill which does so much to make it accessible for local owners / artists). The town events are touristy & chaotic and most locals don't even go. Town government is unfriendly and not at all progressive, with a reputation for being a total headache to work with.
  • Division/Drama Among Residents: The community feels divided, with most families concentrated in just 3-4 affluent subdivisions... and whoa, the neighborhood drama there is extreme. Alternatively, many locals are frustrated with the rapid growth of the town - which I get. But either way, the tone of the community feels like "watch your back."
    • EX: I recently lost a long-time friend to her neighborhood "cool girls" and it just broke my heart. Once they welcomed her into "their group," she ousted all of her old friends. Before she was in the group - the stories she told me about them were horrifying - actual adult bullies. Someone chose to move it got so bad. It heightened my concern about raising my kids in this environment because I see the meanness, materialism and exclusivity far too often.
  • Cost of Living:
    • Housing within our $450-600k budget offers limited options, often “cookie-cutter” homes with no charm and no trees / yard. We'd need $800-900k for what we're looking for - mostly updated 3-4BR home with character, some privacy and a decent yard.
    • Daycare is expensive ($1,300/month for our youngest, rising 5% annually).
    • Local restaurant prices match the Charlotte market so little "small town benefit"
    • Commercial leases are high ($2,000/month for a 250 SQ FT Main Street studio), making it challenging for small business owners like us to set up shop without breaking the bank.

Hopes for our future town / Beaufort:

  • Housing Options / Welcoming Community:
    • Inventory: We'd love to find either an older that's been remodeled or a new home that's got character. We'd love to live in a community with other young families. We're looking for a 3-4 bed, 3-4 bath. Would this be possible for $550-600K?
    • Community: We want a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere with warm neighbors. Any neighborhoods or communities that are particularly welcoming to new families?
  • High-Quality / Safe Education:
    • We’d love diverse educational options that encourage creativity, environmental awareness, and hands-on learning alongside academics. Safety and quality are so important. It would be so hard to leave two schools that feel so secure for all of us. The mom guilt would be real. What are your experiences with local daycares / schools?
  • Arts and Creative Community:
    • I’m an artist, and I value a vibrant arts community with galleries, artist groups, and events where we can connect and collaborate. From the outside looking it - the creative community looks awesome!
  • Nature & History: It would be so good to be back in the lowcountry - the history, food, the culture, the natural surroundings. We know Beaufort has it!

Any tips or insights would be greatly appreciated as we consider this move.

Thank you!

Gravel / dirt trails for cycling in low country

So this questions isn’t really just for Beaufort but there isn’t an active lowcountry subreddit.

Just wanted to ask if people know of any good trails for gravel / dirt road cycling?

I know of pickney island, I hear palmetto bluff in bluffton has some nice trails, I saw some trails in Walterboro when driving through recently.

I’m near Hardeeville / Bluffton but would would drive for a good trail.

Anyone know of any good places to check out? Thanks!

Potbelly allowed in Beaufort?

We are planning to move back east with our potbelly pig and we are finding vast differences in allowed vs not in SC. Does anyone know if potbellies are allowed in Beaufort county, and if they are, are they limited to specific zones? I can’t find anything online about this whatsoever. Thank you!

Must see locations

Hello, I’m new to SC and planning a day trip to Beaufort. Any suggestions on best places to visit. Also looking for a seafood restaurant with FRESH seafood. (Ate at Shem Creek in Charleston and the seafood was frozen off of US Foods truck!). Thank you for any suggestions.

Anyone know a good photographer for professional headshots?

I got moved to a fancy new role and for God knows why, I can’t use a picture of me in a sheep costume as my profile pic anymore. I guess it’s time to up my game.

Flying over Beaufort in Microsoft Flight Simulator (1:1 scale)

Hello everyone, my name is Joaquín Gelmini, and I want to share with you the flight I made over Beaufort. I'm a virtual explorer, haha! From video 609 to the last one (i´m still flying over SC) in my playlist, I’m flying across the United States, specifically over South Carolina. If you're interested, feel free to check it out. I hope you enjoy it!

Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Maybe I'm being nosy...

I'm a USCB student online living in the GSP area. Today I got a text about the Beaufort campus being on lockdown, and thought maybe more information would be sent via email after it was resolved, but got nothing. Does anyone know what prompted it?

Remember how we used to have electricity?

Yeah, that was nice. Thanks a lot, Helene.

Sorry for the low-effort post...just going crazy with generators on either side of me making an insane racket.

Low key camping

Hey there, , my brother and I are coming down for a guided fishing trip in November and we're looking for some place to camp that's off the beaten path. Maybe a campground or an island we can paddle to to be able to chill. Anybody know anything about that? Thanks

Griffin Market closed?

I know they usually take the month of September off, but they look more closed than usual this time. No typed letter on the door. Google says "Permanently Closed". Their website looks like it needs maintenance. Very empty inside the building. Just looking for confirmation/more information.
