A subreddit to share links to sources or works in the field of Islamic studies.

Salams and welcome to our subreddit!

We created this subreddit so that we can gather some good sources that will increase our depth of understanding in Islam in one place and other people don't have to go through the process of finding them we went through.

Posting to the Subreddit

All users are allowed to post here but ultimately the mods will decide what gets approved. I can't give any direct rules as to what we will not approve but I can say that sources that we believe to be spreading misinformation will not be approved. We will also not approve posts that don't follow our format until the format is fixed. You should ultimately act within the boundaries of common sense and make posts that will fit the atmosphere of the subreddit.

Update: Please don't post Friday khutbah format lectures and in general anything that is not professional.

Posting Guidelines

When making your posts please make the title as explanatory as possible and try to add a comment with some more general information on what one can expect to find when following the link. You can follow the format in this post as a general guideline.

Requests

If you have a book request you wan't to make for us to try to find for you feel free to do so by sending us a modmail following this link. If we are free (and feeling like it) we will try to find the source material for you.

Reading Circle Week 36: The Tragedy of Human Rights: Liberalism and the Loss of Belonging (Adam B. Seligman & David W. Montgomery) [20 Minute Read]

The 36th week of readings explores the topic of communities and belonging, and offers a critique of prevailing notions of liberalism based on this. It's a very short but enlightening read so I strongly recommend it.

Reading Circle Week 35: What is Political Philosophy? (Leo Strauss) [60 Minute Read]

Longer time no see! The 35th week of readings explores what political philosophy is and how the face of politics has changed in and throughout modernity. If you are low on time I recommend focusing on sections 1 and 3 and skimming over section 2.

Need people to help with articles for my Islamic Wikipedia

Asalamualaikom, brothers/sisters. I made a site some time back WikiMuslim.net, and at this point it’s fully set up. I was wondering if there were any brothers and sisters willing to write for it. It will be an Islamic based Wikipedia. Stuff like meaning of keywords, tawheed, iblees, Ikhlas, mimbar, dhikr and etc. And how to articles like how to pray or how to preform umrah. And stuff like short biographies of the sahaba. Major Islamic events like the Hijra, etc And another section based on refuting islamaphobic claims like WikiIslam.net put forward. Basically everything in one place inshAllah.

If anyone can help, please either pm me or join this discord group regarding it.

Reading Circle Week 32: Harmonization of Common Law and Shari’ah in Malaysia: A Practical Approach (Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad) [45 Minute Read]

Week 32's reading is a 45-minute read from Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamed, the former chief judge of Malaysia. I believe it relates to the important issue of state-fiqh relations. Other readings we have done on this topic before are Wael Hallaq's "Impossible State" and Samy Ayoub's "Majalla". I believe the reading here will be provocative for many, and it will spark discussion. Do not be dismayed by the constant referral to court cases in the beginning, the theoretical section quickly follows. This is the section I would ideally like the readers of BaH to focus on.

Reading Circle Week 31: Modern Social Imaginaries: Introduction & Ch. 1-2 (Charles Taylor) [45 Minute Read]

Week 31's reading is a 45-minute read from Charles Taylor. It can provide you with an important tool to conceptualize culture and civilization. It can also be beneficial in conceptualizing social change. I highly recommend you to read it. If you don't have 45 minutes, please read the introduction and the second chapter to get the gist of the idea.

Reading Circle Week 28: Law, Religion and Human Dignity in the Muslim World Today: An Examination of OIC's Cairo Declaration of Human Rights (Abdullah al-Ahsan)

Week 28's reading is another article about human rights. However, it attempts to discover the political tensions underlying the approach of Muslim states in adopting and implementing human rights. I believe it is a good article as it shows how human rights in the Muslim world are seen as something that can be a defensive mechanism against the un-Islamic rule that is characterized by oppression. This complicates our understanding of Islamist groups as treating human rights as a Western concept and rejecting it.

Reading Circle Week 27: Dangerous Tales: Dominant Narratives On the Congo and Their Unintended Consequences (Severine Autesserre)

Week 27's reading is post-conflict Congo, but the main reason we are reading it is not for this specific focus, but the conceptual discussion that prefaces this about narratives. This section is less than 10 pages, but if read carefully can be beneficial.

Reading Circle Week 24: Classical Ash‘ari Anthropology: Body, Life and Spirit (Ayman Shihadeh)

Week 24's reading is about an important topic: human ontology. It explores the views on human existence classical Ashari scholars had. While it is a bit of a long read, I think the topic is important enough.
