Fruit Flies

Has anyone else in Bayonne been noticing an increase of fruit flies? We spoke with two other friends here who confirmed they were having issues too, but I’m just curious if it reach led out of our little network here. My boyfriend and I live in a two family house and both we and the person that lives on the floor below were both away in mid-to late August and when we came back we noticed fruit flies had some how come in. We had cleaned our place before we left and I know our downstairs neighbor keeps their unit very well kept so we’re at a loss why they migrated to us. We have continued to wipe down every surface and keep things very neat, we’ve used the apple cider vinegar trick, and have bought zevo plugs and put them in every room, but we are still not able to get rid of them and I’m really starting to get grossed out. It’s making me not want to even cook because I’m afraid it’ll attract them more. Is anyone else noticing that their home has been infested with these annoying things? It’s been over a month now and no matter how many we kill, we can’t seem to get rid of them.

I kinda love it here

After finding a temporary place before I sign a 12 month lease. Bayonne is so cute. The bars and bartenders are friendly. The food is really good. A lot of things are waking distance. I’ve talked to black, white and Hispanic people who were all friendly. I don’t feel out of place as a poc, and it’s super close to jersey city and NYC. After being raised in Bergen county, and living in Newark, I may like Hudson county the best. Newark has a lot of gems and a really tight friendly art community, but the lack of affordable housing in decent areas suck, and the crime is so overwhelmingly ignorant. I lived next to a police department… and it was open drug market. Junkies and dealers everywhere and the police did nothing until a shooting happened which forced me to vacate my place.

NJT Hudson County Bus Survey

https://www.njtransit.com/newbushudsonsurvey

One of the biggest issues I put was the lack of service from Hudson County to Newark Airport, as well as from Union City to/from points west (for example, after 3pm, there's no #163 service from Union City to points west, and in the morning, the #85 doesn't start running from American Dream despite the #703 to the #85 being the only reasonable way to get into Hudson County while the interstate routes are bypassing Union City to get into the NJ-495 bus lane).

Looking for people to trial our business

Have you ever wanted to have a painting of your partner, a family portrait, your dog or whatever your favorite photo is? I always loved the idea of painting but unfortunately I'm not the best at it. A few months ago though a friend and I came up with a cool idea, what if you could turn any photo you want into a paint by numbers. That way anyone can paint, anything they want.

We looked up custom paint by numbers and found a few Etsy stores selling them but they were way overpriced and most of them didn't even come with the canvas on a frame. So we looked around and talked to a bunch of suppliers, eventually we managed to produce custom paint by number kits cheaper then anywhere else and already framed (you can still order them without a frame but we found most people want them ready to go out of the box).

Long story short though we're trying to grow and get more people talking about us. So we decided it would be a good idea to reach out to some subreddits and hopefully you'll enjoy them enough to share your experience :)

You can use the code "COSTPRICEREDDIT" to get our kits for cost price (our margins are pretty slim right now we want to be as affordable as possible). You can get up to 4 kits at that price so feel free to buy a few and plan a date night, family activity or just get your Christmas shopping done early.

Halloween in Bayonne

We're looking for stuff to do locally with our preschooler in and around Bayonne for Halloween. I know the school on C and 5th is having a Trunk or Treat on the 28th. What else is happening around town? Best spots for actual trick or treating on the 31st? Should we just take her up and down Broadway and trick or treat at stores?

Recycling pick up

Did they change the date for recycling. They've missed my stuff a few times before, but woke up this morning and the entire block didn't get collected. Is it just W18th or did they take the night off for a holiday?

Need a roommate, or looking to be one?

I currently live just outside Paterson and Haledon. And a huge gorgeous apartment with three bedrooms giant backyard garage two car driveway on a quiet street. Unfortunately, I am working at Jersey City Public Works and the commute is quite bad so I’m looking to move somewhere up there, but I do not know North Jersey very well I’m 39 white male, I’m very quiet and spend most of my time watching movies or reading. But I’m also sociable if you’re inviting or would like to go out with some company I’m happy to hang out with anybody. I’m open to all types of people and situations. Don’t wanna be near any drugs unless maybe you smoke pot I don’t mind that , sometimes I go out barbecues things of that nature not often though. I have a lot of great furniture and flatscreen TVs and tables that I’m willing to share. Just looking for something closer to Jersey City now doesn’t matter where it is as long as it’s something reasonably priced and clean and we can get along. I’m a very chill laid-back guy. I’m quiet, I’m clean, I really like to cook. So if I have access to the kitchen, you’ll probably be getting a lot of free meals lol, I do have a small French bulldog mix, which I would pay extra if anybody would consider her. She literally does not know how to bite and sleep 20 hours a day but I’ve already prepared myself for having to get rid of her. It would be amazing miracle if I was able to keep her because my two year-old son loves her, he will not be living with me. He’s living with his mother, and I will hopefully be out visiting him quite often. a few weeks from 7 AM to 3 PM. After work, I will most likely go to the gym and go see my son for a few hours and usually in bed by 10:30 or 11 during the week. I’m open to any kind of people any type of situation as long as it feels safe.

Side note: I have an amazing huge apartment out this way. If anyone is looking or knows anybody looking for a room to stay and want to live out here, and if I cannot find a place I like closer to work I will stay here and take on a roommate. Your bedroom is quite large. We have a huge living/dining room, pretty decent size kitchen hardwood floors. The house is pretty clean and pretty dope. We also have a massive backyard, we can barbecue with 40 or 50 people. I also have a garage and two car driveway and there’s always plenty of street parking if you need storage.

Bayonne Public Library Book Club October 2024

Join Bayonne Public Library and Mamas in Bayonne for our October 2024 Bayonne Book Club!

All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. The genre / theme of the books chosen will vary. The discussions will be moderated by Bayonne local, Angela van Genderen (@angela_the_ninja).

This month’s meeting will be Thursday, October 24th at 7 pm in the Small Programming Room on the 2nd Floor at the Bayonne Public Library. In celebration of October spookiness, we will be reading “Where He Can’t Find You” by Darcy Coates.

We will be joined by Sonja, who runs the horror book review Instagram @spookycurious!

Attendees can join in-person or virtually via Zoom. To attend virtually, please sign up via the library calendar event listing.

What’s the book about? DON’T WALK ALONE, OR THE STITCHER WILL FIND YOU.

Abby Ward lives in a town haunted by disappearances. People vanish, and when they’re found, their bodies have been dismembered and sewn back together in unnatural ways. But is it the work of a human killer…or something far darker?

DON’T STAY OUT LATE, OR THE STITCHER WILL TAKE YOU.

She and her younger sister live by a strict set of rules designed to keep them safe―which is why it’s such a shock when Hope is taken. Desperate to get her back, Abby tells the police everything she knows, but they claim their hands are tied.

DON’T CLOSE YOUR EYES, OR THE STITCHER WILL REMAKE YOU.

With every hour precious, Abby and her friends are caught in a desperate game of cat and mouse. They have to get Hope back.

How can you participate? Bayonne Public Library has eBook and eAudiobook copies available via hoopla as well as physical book copies. If you’d prefer to purchase your own physical copy, we recommend purchasing from The Little Boho Bookshop, our favorite local bookshop, located at 164A Broadway or online at https://thelittlebohobookshop.com/

Anyone know what’s up with the hovering helicopters today?

First one I saw around 10 am hovering near (what I assume was) Avenue A, now there’s one hovering towards Broadway.

Just took off as I was typing this.

September 28, 1923

September 28, 1923
Bayonne, NJ

An explosion and fire at the the Baker Castor Oil Company claimed a 4th victim as Milford Haight succumbed to burns and other injuries over night. This was in additional to three other men who died in the initial blast of 30,000 gallons of gasoline the previous afternoon.

An 83 year old woman, Anna Roskos, stayed overnight at the police station when an patrolman observed injuries to her nose and ankle - suspected to be from a fall. Though she had affluent children living in the city, she refused to stay with them.

Looking for jobs

I’m younger and still in HS (17 years old) and was wondering if anyone knew of any jobs I could work at. I honestly don’t want fast food as the stories I’ve heard from friends/family have pushed me away from it so anything other than that would be appreciated. I need more a flexible-ish schedule (by this I mean somewhere that isn’t going to require me to work every day of the week) as I’m really only going to be able to work Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday, and occasionally pick up shifts on other days. I know I’m really asking for a lot but I’m in need of a job so any help would be appreciated, thanks.
