Hi, I wanted to reach out to see if there was any toy drive where I can donate a toy that a kid specifically wished for.
My previous job did this but I am unemployed and no longer have that option. That said I still want to make the donation to a wish toy drive this year.
Please let me know. Thanks in advance.
Happy holidays.
Hey everyone!
I've been looking to subscribe to a print newspaper (for sunday delivery only). I know it's a bit of an odd thing to do now (considering one can find news faster and cheaper online), but I just enjoy reading physical newspapers.
Are there any local newspapers that offer high quality journalism and cover local topics? I live in the South Bay, but I'm fine with Bay Area wide coverage. If it matters, I would enjoy coverage on local politics, transit, and bay area sports teams (49ers, warriors).
After doing a bit of research, it seems that many are saying that the SF Chronicle has been on the decline. Is this still true, and would you guys recommend a subscription to it or something like SJ's Mercury News? If not, I would love to know if there are any other good local newspapers that I may be unaware of. I'd prefer to go with a local option over something like the NYT, but if there aren't any good local papers, I might not have a choice.
Thanks :)
I live in the Saranap area of unincorporated Walnut Creek (between our downtown and Lafayette), and today we are experiencing yet another substantial power outage. I haven't kept track but I feel like this is the 10th outage for us in the past year. And most of these outages go on for 2 - 10 hours. I seem to recall that outages almost never happened, and if they did, they lasted about 3 minutes. Now, they are frequent and often hours long. Does anyone know what is going on?
Crossing the Carquinez bridge today, I saw an announcement that tolls are set to increase to $8 on January 1. Eight fucking dollars daily to cross the Carquinez bridge. Literal highway fucking robbery. OK, vent over, carry-on.
Hi all,
My spouse and I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment. We were with this building for almost one year, and the management seemed good and we loved our 1 bedroom. When it came time to renew our lease, we needed a two bedroom apartment and decided to stay with this building. We toured multiple 2 bedroom apartments that were within our price range, and they finally showed us a two bedroom which we liked. This unit had not been previously rented (when we asked why this was the case - management just said it just never got rented - should've been our first red flag). We went ahead and transferred our lease to the 2 bedroom. When we completed our move that night, when we ran the kitchen sink, there was a disgusting fowl smell that erupted from the kitchen (and the sink had a leak). That night our apartment literally smelled like sewage. We immediately reported this the next day, maintenance fixed the leak and said to give the smell some time (just run the water, some times it's the p-traps, etc). Needless to say, the smell did not go away. They moved us to a temporary unit (so now we had to move TWICE within 5 days). They did not have any two bedrooms available, so they put us in a 1 bedroom with a den (this unit is worse than the 1 bedroom we were in previously). Since the market rate went up, the temporary unit is essentially the same market rate as the two bedroom. We fought them on this and they gave a 2 week concession. They also promised us (i have it in writing) that if another 2 bed unit became available, they would let us know. They didn't. Essentially, they have absolutely no incentive to fix our previous unit and they will not negotiate the rent of any two bed units that become available because it's the market rate. I understand how supply and demand works, but does anyone else think this is ridiculous?? Are there any legal actions I can take?
Anyone recommend a company in the east bay that can help detect water leaks?
I have a bunch of 3D filament, PLA, and was hoping to recycle it. Does anyone know a local company that can recycle it locally?
Given the discussions had in waiting rooms, I have the same or better qualifications than a lot of these applicants, I speak the lagnuage perfectly & I have a side hustle portfolio that speaks for itself, which uses the same skills as my career.
This idea that the Bay Area is racially progressive is misleading, the situation really is that the Bay Area(& California generally) IS racially progressive UNLESS you're black. And this mentality gets more pronounced the further you get away from Oakland; Livermore, Dublin, Half Moon Bay, pretty much most of the North Bay, you might as well be in KKK land as a black person.
And the only reason I bring up "broken English" is because it's the most direct, visible & tanglible obstacle, if every other qualification is equally yoked or in my case, even better between candidates in an English speaking country, no other reason beside that.
Every day there’s a post complaining about being unemployed for x years in the bay. No one cares, stop running to the internet to commiserate with your fellow techies because you joined a field with inherent volatility. Reminder that this industry you complain about is the reason why the rest of us experience many of the issues associated with unemployment (unable to keep up with COL, etc).
You made your bed by majoring in CS, sleep in it.
The Stevens Creek Corridor Steering Committee will be having its final meeting on December 18th at 10am in Santa Clara City Hall. They're in favor of long-term elevated light rail, which will be an awesome service, but they haven't said anything about short-term transit improvements like dedicated bus lanes, which would massively improve cross valley transit overnight and wouldn't increase travel times for drivers.
With dedicated bus lanes, the trip from Alum Rock to De Anza College could be just over 30 minutes, compared to 75 minutes today.
The current transit is totally unacceptable and we deserve better!

Has anyone else noticed the insane shift in the job market lately? It feels like a whole new level of chaos, and it’s getting harder to navigate. One job opening now attracts thousands of applicants in no time. Passing the first round of interviews? Great, but then you're faced with 3 to 5 more rounds – each feeling like an obstacle course. It’s not just exhausting; it’s downright discouraging.
And the worst part? Salary expectations are becoming more disconnected from the experience and value professionals bring. Companies are lowballing offers, giving less than what’s deserved despite the increased workload and responsibilities.
What’s especially frustrating for me, as a senior engineer in the Bay Area tech industry, is that I’m constantly contacted by recruiters from decent-sized startups, only to be offered roles where they want me to report to someone in their 20s with minimal experience, or take on a title like "Engineering Manager" while starting at the bottom of the organizational ladder. It feels like they’re trying to get someone highly experienced for the lowest possible pay—and it’s incredibly disheartening. After years of honing my skills and contributing at a high level, these offers feel like a step backward instead of an opportunity for growth.
Is it just me, or is the job market completely broken right now? If you’re feeling frustrated, you're not alone. It’s tough to figure out where to turn when the system feels so out of balance.
A photo I took in San Jose during the stormy week. Photo was taken with the XT-30ii, with the 18-55mm lens, and post-processed.

A few times a year in the summer, they allow you to view through the 40-inch Nickel Reflector telescope. Are there other observatories/spots that allow for similar stargazing?
