Are chain turns typically danced by men, or is this primarily a step for women?
If not, what is a reasonable substitute?

Hello, recently asked a similar question so I hope this is allowed.
I am just interested to know how many hours per week you dance and across how many days per week?
What levels of classes do you do? Do you continue to take beginner level classes alongside more challenging classes? Do you take a mix of levels or the same level?
Do you do any other exercise?
Are you in employment as well and how do you find managing your time and energy? Any tips for this? Is it going to be difficult?
I will be starting a new job soon and I'm trying to figure out what dance classes to take. I am excited about my new job but it will be a big lifestyle change from me being a student.
Thanks in advance for your answers, I'm really interested in finding out more about what other recreational dancers do.

Male dancers, do you wear a dance belt when you wear a leotard? My leotard tends to hold things quite well in place and doubling up with a dance belt is almost uncomfortable, especially with tights on top. Triple layered...
I’m 42 and have been taking ballet off/on for 10 years after quitting in middle school.
I used to have legit banana feet. One of the many things I didn’t know about aging is that our arches can fall. I’ve noticed a significant change in my arches over the last year. It’s making class more difficult and I know this is vain, but I miss how they used to look.
I’ve seen lots of tips for people who were born with flatter feet wanting to raise their arches but I’m curious if anyone here is over 40 and has found stretches or exercises to help combat the impact of aging.
Hello Dancers,
Can anyone please spare a moment to explain, or point me to a tutorial, ballet, instruction, or other example of, the technique for how a man should run onstage?
I have an upcoming show, I’m the only male, and the teacher is showing the technique for female runs.
Female run technique doesn’t look good on me.
I never thought that learning to walk/run could be so difficult.
Thank you <3
There are no adult beginner classes in my area, so I am taking privates until I can get into the intermediate/advanced classes. I am currently paying 50/hour two hours a week. Basically 400$/month.
I’m a college student, so it’s lowkey a lot, just making sure I’m not wasting money. Any suggestions on saving? Thanks!
I'm a modern dancer turned ballet dancer. :) I've been doing ballet for about two years now, and got pointe shoes about a year ago. My main frustrations with pointe has been the slippery floors- I danced barefoot on marley for twelve years and now I'm dancing on satin and my new studio has hardwood flooring. I've tried rosin and darning my shoes, but I still struggle not to slip. Any advice? :)
I really enjoy this piece we use for grand rond de jambe in centre. I know it's Chopin but I'm assuming it's an excerpt - does anyone know if there's a full piece for this? Thank you!
I’m curious how ballet helps or hurts the body over time. I’m assuming the increase in strength and flexibility is beneficial, but I also wonder if the strain of so many years of ballet would lead to injuries or chronic pain in your 60s, 70s, 80s. Can anyone weigh in?
I just recently started adult ballet - never have done any dance form (other than ballet until I was 4 or 5). Some of the other ladies in my class dress casually (like myself currently) but some of them wear Leos and I think they look so elegant! Could I get some pointers on what cheaper brands are reputable and/or where I can look for secondhand leos? If anyone is looking to sell any (specifically Maldire) please PM me as well!!
I forgot to add that I’m located in Canada!
I did ballet for YEARS. My body became crazy-good at balancing; even when I moved onto other dance forms. (But still practiced ballet moves at home).
But two weeks ago, I badly rolled my ankle. I heard a crack. I ruptured two ligaments, one which peeled the tiniest bit of bone, and caused a crush-injury on another ligament. (This was at an obstacle course).
I'm seeing an orthopedist, a podiatrist, a physio, and a doctor. I'm also in a moonboot and taking on gentle rehab exercises. One exercise which includes retraining balance.
With that being said; has anyone here experienced something similar? What was your recovery journey like? Being unable to balance on that leg feels insane. I don't feel like I'm in my body anymore. It's silly to say, but it's like part of my identity is gone. :( All those years of balancing and being gracefully-stable on that leg, absolutely gone...
Anyway, I would appreciate listening to any stories. <3 Thank you.
Something looks off about my upper body when I turn, and I think it may be arms and not pulling up enough? I'm 'spinning' more so than turning. If it's anything else, what's off? My arms seem to be too low and far apart?
I need to get an experience of a ballet class off my chest. Have you ever taken an adult ballet class where there is one student who just really has horrible etiquette and ruins the entire mood?
A woman came into the class for the first time (it is an adult intermediate class) and before the class even started she asked who was a pro dancer in the room. She then proceeds to say “ohhh you all look so pro I just want a class for fun.” Everyone assured her she would be fine and it’s a non stressful environment.
Later turns out she is incredible in technique. But what miffed me the most was that she takes out her iPhone to start filming herself. She then spends the whole stretch period taking selfies of herself in the mirror.
When we went across the floor she starts to direct myself and others if we can stay in the back behind her.
Oh my goodness it was the worst class because she had the worst etiquette. I really resent anyone bringing in their judgement to an adult ballet class. I grew up dancing and I understand the environment was not always the healthiest. Yet as an adult, please have some introspection and do not carry the competitive and downright rude spirit into a recreational class for adults.
I started ballet classes very recently and wore slippers for the first time yesterday (Bloch Proflex, I like them a lot). When I took my shoes off at the end of class, there were bruises on top of one of my feet. My feet are used to taking a lot of abuse from figure skating, so I’m not hugely concerned, but I’m wondering whether this indicates that my shoes don’t fit properly? Or is this just normal for a new pair of slippers?

At home I have vinyl and at my gym there's wood. I have a little access to marley, but not much. Was wondering, are there any tricks to making floor (or footwear) more sticky? e.g., spraying water on the floor and letting it dry? Or I might just buckle down and buy a marley square. But if there's something cheap/easy it'd be nice to know.
Hi! I want to buy tickets to ABT Kids and noticed there are two price points. One is the standard seat at $32.50 and the other is the premium ABT Kids seat for $152.50. Those seem to be along the aisle in the orchestra. Is something included with the more expensive seat? I can't seem to find information that distinguishes between the two, and I don't think it's just paying for an aisle seat. Has anyone been to ABT Kids that knows the difference - or does someone just happen to know? Thanks in advance!
Hey everyone, Happy Dancewear Monday! Please feel free in posting a picture of your dancewear style, your new dancewear purchase, your cute warmups, etc. Just a reminder of the guidelines:
It is recommended to blur out your face if you want to keep some anonymity.
Please list what brands you are wearing in the comments in case other users want to know where you found stuff.
All Dancewear Mondays will be NO CRITICISM with regards to ballet. So if someone posts a picture of them in arabesque being like “look at my cute leg warmers” DO NOT comment “Looks great but you should turn out more”. We don’t care if your intentions are good and you are just trying to help, on this subreddit critique is only given when explicitly asked for. If you wouldn’t say it to someone in class don’t comment it on here. (And if you would tell a fellow dancer to turn out more, or something, randomly in class well that just reflects poorly on you).
New users who have low comment karma: your post will be filtered into a queue and need to be mod approved, so please be patient if your post does not appear right away.
Use the Dancewear Monday flair
Thanks :)
Adult amateur ballet dancer getting back into adult ballet after long while. I am looking for some stretches or exercises to help elongate my lower back. I have a pretty distinct curve that pushes my booty out my back doesn’t have that straightened look or flexibility.
I once saw a ballet excersise against the wall on YouTube but can’t find it again.
I do the knee to chest stretch on the floor and child’s pose but I feel like there is probably more out there.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My kid does RAD ballet at their studio however they don’t do RAD ballet examinations as a standard part of ballet.
They select some students to do it based on I guess how good they are and those students have to pay extra for private lessons and the examinations.
Is this standard? I would have thought all students would have to do RAD ballet examinations if they are taking RAD ballet classes?
At what general age/experience should they attempt RAD ballet exams?
I washed my ballet slippers, and thought to use a little cornstarch on the suede split soles. I wanted to make them more slippery so I can actually turn safely. Sometimes I do a pirouette but my shoe sticks to the Marley floor, so my foot goes one way and the shoe goes another. Not great.
Unfortunately the cornstarch seemed to make my shoe even stickier! I literally couldn’t slide across for tombé pas de bourré, and had a hard time even doing a quarter turn pirouette. Help! What do I do?
Washed up ballet dancer turned ballet teacher here. Trying to find ways to monetize my teaching outside of adding another night at a studio, and considering creating online classes. I have plenty of experience with video and editing software and feel confident in how I could market the program.
My husband has been following beginner online ballet classes just on YouTube, but has run out of classes that are an appropriate level. I had the idea of creating my own videos and subscription platform for online classes, but after research I know plenty of other people are doing this.
My questions: is there anything that you think the online dance class community is missing? Do you think enough/too much exists already? Are people actually paying for these videos, or are people only wanting access to free content on YouTube?
I personally felt like there is still a need for on-demand (not live) classes for ABSOLUTE adult beginners, but I’d love to hear other perspectives and opinions.
Editing to add my thoughts on beginners doing online class without feedback and corrections: My husband takes ballet to have an understanding of my world and career and because even if he’s doing things wrong, he admires the artistry and still gets a work out from using muscles in a way he never would with a traditional workout. This is my target audience- I know an online class can never replicate the energy of a group class or provide the personal feedback that is necessary for growth in ballet. I think ballet should be accessible to people who just want to learn to dance and aren’t able to/interested in the personal feedback experience of a live class.
My 11 year old daughter will be starting pre-pointe classes next year at her ballet studio. She is extremely excited, and wants to start working on her strength and flexibility over the summer.
I had thought she could try some barre strength classes on my peloton account, but a search in here said that it doesn't translate well...
Does anyone have any class/video suggestions she can do at home over the summer? I strength train, but am a runner, so I don't think my strength training will be ideal for her. Especially because, like a lot of endurance runners, I can't even touch my toes anymore 🤣
Thanks you so much!
