5 day North Bay summer tour

Hi there.

Myself and my partner are looking to take a Monday thru Friday tour north of the Bay Area this summer (dates flexible). I am looking at some route ideas but hoping that I can get some ideas from this community. We are going to come from SLC via the train and can bring hardtail MTBs or gravel/touring bikes. Ideally, we are looking for somewhere around 150-200 miles total, depending on mix of dirt/road and flat/climbs.

My first thought is to go over the GGB from downtown to Pantoll Campground. From there, we would camp out at Point Reyes for two nights, exploring the Wildcat and Sky campgrounds. Then, we would head back south to camp at Samuel P Taylor. Our last day would be heading down into Larkspur and take the ferry back.

Overall, mileage seems low but I know there’s a good bit of climbing. We would follow some of the Triple Bay Crossover bikepacking.com route which seems to have some crazy steep pitches.

  1. How safe is the Shoreline Hwy between Dogtown and Olema on a weekday?

  2. Is Point Reyes NP worth multiple nights of camping in?

  3. Is the Pt. Reyes / Petaluma road busy on weekdays? Is it a pleasurable road to ride on?

Let me know if there are other routes in the area (including Santa Rosa, Sonoma, Napa). We are pretty open ended and don’t mind involving transit in our plans as well.

Morgan Territory in reverse?

I’ve done Morgan Territory a time or two but always from Mt Diablo.

My bike husband is proposing an east bay loop where we will be going in reverse.

I dunno…that descent from top of MT seems to go on forever. Not getting a clear idea from RWGPS and he’s actually never done it before either so just thought I would seek out first hand experiences here.

So how long is that climb??

ETA - really appreciate all the comments especially about road conditions in the Clayton area!

wtb: budget gravel bike/medium

based in the east bay (berkeley), looking for a gravel bike that's of better quality than what I'd buy at walmart. had my eye on their house line which has gotten favorable reviews, yet my gut tells me it'll bite me in the ass later.

i'm 5'10 so figured medium would fit me best. lmk if you have one to sell!

Best Tubeless Plug kit?

Need to get a tubeless plug kit and looking at dynaplug but open to other options. Mostly looking for something for my road bike. I ride mostly in the east bay hills. What other pieces should I be looking at?

Best route from Santa Cruz to San Jose?

Hi, I am currently bikepacking and need a good route to get from Santa Cruz to San Jose. I was hoping someone here could help me out. I’ve currently got this route on Strava, but the area around the Lexington Reservoir seems to be gravel? I’m on 32mm gatorskins and carrying 16 lbs of stuff so I’m looking for the safest and easiest option.

https://strava.app.link/BuWNIunNmPb (I’m on the app and it won’t let me link the route in the text)

What tires are you running on your XC hardtails?

Just picked up a second-hand Ibis DV9 and I’m excited to put some faster-rolling tires on it (came with some 2.6” Ground Controls).

I’m mostly ride in the East Bay (Wildcat and Tilden) and Marin (Tam, China Camp). I also have a full squish so this doesn’t need to be the Tamarancho bike or the Demo bike - looking for a fast roller for long days in the saddle.

I’m tempted to just put Rekon Race front and rear, but I wonder what other folks are running for this kinda setup?

Bike suggestions for an excited amateur

I am moving to San Francisco - Duboce Triangle, and have never owned a good road bike before. Whenever I have traveled to the city in the last 3 years, I have gone upto Tiburon and done the paradise loop, loved every bit of it. I know that the city and the bay area in general has a thriving biking community and I would love to get plugged into it.

I am looking for a bike (mostly second hand) that could serve the following purposes:

  • ride 1-3x a week from Duboce triangle to Lake Merced via GGP/Ocean beach and back
  • ride to work in downtown 1-3x a week
  • occasional long ride 1x a week over the weekend to paradise loop/north bay across the bridge

What are my best options and how should I think about budgeting for such a bike?

Gravel bike tire clearance for North Bay?

I'm looking at getting into gravel cycling and something that keeps coming up in everything that I read is that tire choice is important and very terrain dependent. What are people happy riding around on in the Marin headlands, Tam and Bolinas ridge? I'm based in the city and imagine that'll be where I do most of my riding.

Are people happy riding Canyons and Cervelos on 40mm or should I look at something like a Lauf that can clear 2" tires?

Cheers

$2,000 e-bike credit starts 12/18!

https://www.ktvu.com/news/new-california-program-will-offer-2000-toward-purchase-e-bike.amp

details in the article… seems like a good way for people who can’t afford a car to get alternate transportation. not sure why they’re only doing e-bikes though… you’d think a credit for all bikes would be better for the environment.

public transit assisted 3 peak (hamilton, diablo, tam) ride advice?

i’ve always wanted to climb hamilton, diablo, and tam in a day, but don’t think i would want to ride all of the in-between sections. so, i’m thinking about doing a public transit assisted version from San Francisco.

my plan would be to do this on a weekday in mid-May for my birthday

i’m thinking my route would be:

  1. bike to 4th & king caltrain station
  2. ride first train to diridon
  3. ride up hamilton from diridon station
  4. descend hamilton to berryesa BART station
  5. ride BART to walnut creek
  6. ride up diablo from walnut creek BART station
  7. descend diablo to walnut creek BART
  8. ride BART to richmond
  9. bike across richmond-san rafael bridge (bus if they close the bike path)
  10. climb up tam
  11. bike back to SF

my partner will likely join in the public transit rides and serve as my food and emotional support. i’ll hopefully also have friends join for all or some of this ride.

do we think this could be doable? i ride quite a bit already, but would plan to train pretty aggressively for the next few months in preparation. i haven’t climbed hamilton or diablo, so i’ll definitely climb those both separately first to assess

Overnight parking north of SF, and trail/road suggestions to a visitor

Hi all,

I'm planning to spend 3 days riding around north of SF. From as far south as sausalito/hawk hill all the way as far as Jenner. I'd love to go all the way out to Point Reyes on one of the days.

I've never really ridden much in this area before, and I have a gravel bike. Have enough fitness to do back to back to back 6 hour days, but rather not get too carried away just because of refueling logistics.

Can ya'll recommend your favorite gravel or road trails/climbs/routes? I'm trying to fit as many "best of the best" routes as I can in these 3 days.

I can do any lengthy climb, and i don't mind some walk-a-bike if the gravel sections become too steep. Just from browsing this sub casually, I have a few in mind. Please let me know if there are places I should avoid due to cars, sketchy roads, etc.

- Fairfax climb (Alpine Dam?)

- Old railroad grade

- HW1 to Bodega bay (too many cars going north? Should I go inland more, and head west to the ocean?)

- Sir Francis Drake Blvd all the way to Pt reyes

- Fairfax-Bolinas road?

Unfortunately most of these are road. I've only heard of old railroad grade.

Also -- is there a place to park a car for 2 nights/3 days north of SF? I've driven up mt Tam and parked on the side of the road coming down to Stinson beach before. Park ranger it's okay to park there. But I wonder if there are better options that are in a city or an actual parking lot or street parking somewhere.

I will be parking my car there and then just bike & camp for 2 nights/3 days.

Thanks!

Lost my x4 camera on alpine

Long shot, but my Insta 360 x4 fell off the front of my bike somewhere on Alpine or Arastadero road this morning, headed down from above Portola and going right on Arastadero and then Purisma. .

If you saw it or have it, please LMK.
