Once you've heard it, you'll never unhear it. BABYMETAL is a band that you'll either love or hate.

Amuse producer Key Kobayashi delved into the unknown and fused Idol (J-Pop) and Metal, creating a sub-group of Sakura Gakuin: BABYMETAL!

Having blossomed in Japan, they exploded into the Western world after their first album release in February 2014. Going on to tour the world within just four years of their creation, they really have taken the metal scene by storm.

Will 2024 merch go online someday?

I was at the Albuquerque event last night (fantastic show!) but the fox pins were sold out by the time I got to the merch stand. Just wondering if shirts or other merch appear on the official site at some point? Since it looks like the merch now is from previous shows. (It was hard to decide on a short design and I also almost wanted to buy each one but I restrained myself lol)

Babymetal's band in Heavier Trip

Lead Guitar: Ilja Blakunovas

Guitar: Algis Fediajevas

Drums: Jokubas Andriulis

Bass: Lukas Malinauskas

All real musicians from Lithuania that I don't believe were associated with each other before. Perhaps names to remember if a new Kami Band appears for the European tour?

Japanese Kami Band Status

I was just seeing that Babymetal's Wikipedia page shows the Japanese Kamis as inactive as of 2023, which is a pretty recent update. Granted, these Wiki pages are maintained by fans that know no more than we do. So, I'll ask you guys, do think we are we going to see the Japanese Kamis again? Seeing how the Western Kamis have been playing all the Japanese and international shows since last March, it's hard to see when an opportunity for the Japanese Kamis would come up, especially since the European shows for 2025 have already been announced.

Just an observation that may not mean anything. Babymetal Returns featured the Japanese Kamis with Momoko as an uncredited dancer. Babymetal Begins: Dark Night features the Western Kamis with Momoko as an uncredited dancer until the reveal at the end. Babymetal Begins: Clear Night features the Western Kamis with Momoko as a full member. So, these shows could be seen as a progression to Babymetal's rebirth, which also includes the Kamis. Since they will never tell us outright that the Japanese Kamis are gone, perhaps we will eventually look back at Babymetal Returns as their farewell shows?

I know we as a fanbase are fairly slow to accept change and I honestly would like to get a sense of what we are thinking on this subject right now. People are still following the Japanese Kamis for clues that they may be on an upcoming tour, so I know there will probably be a difference of opinions. I truly hope I haven't kicked a hornet's nest. There're no wrong answers since OTFGK.

I’m an old new fan.

Was a big fan back in the old days.

Saw them probably 5 or 6 times.

In those days I lived in Japan, not too far from Nagoya, lovely place. Lovely people.

Then Yui left and the BABYMETAL fandom became, let’s say, “difficult”.

I decided I wouldn’t participate in those difficulties.

I kept my eye on BABYMETAL and always liked them but somehow life intruded and they kinda faded a bit, but never entirely, from my memory.

Then.

Just a month or two ago a random friend said, “ Hey, you ever heard of a band called BABYMETAL? Cuz I have a spare ticket”

Anyway.

I went to see them again and I fell head over heels in love with them again.

BABYMETAL are easily as good as and probably better than most any band I’ve ever seen.

Su, in particular, is simply out of this world.

That’s all I’ve got to say. Except this is a band that’s caught me in the feels twice in my life now.

I won’t be letting them go again.

Show Report: Des Moines, IA - BABYMETAL with Scene Queen - Nov. 27th, 2024

https://preview.redd.it/2kxvidjl234e1.jpg?width=598&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=62730e257f329038c026bc24f1e8680dc0268d4d

I've always wanted to write a show report but never seemed to get around to it. So this time I'm typing this up three days after the show while the experience is still fresh in my mind. I attended the Babymetal show in Des Moines, Iowa on Nov 27th and it was one of the best experiences I have had so far. When Babymetal's second round of the US shows was suddenly announced, I was glad to have opened Reddit that day, otherwise I would have completely missed the tour announcement. Thanks to this sub-Reddit I was able to catch that tickets were now on sale, and I had to scramble to determine which show was the least amount of drive time. Quickly doing some address searching on Google maps I discovered it was either Iowa at 3.8 hours or Oklahoma City at 5.2 hours. Jumped online and bought Iowa VIP tickets...or were they First Entry...or were they Priority Entry...or were they Priority Entry with Merch?!?! What the hell, why can't you guys just keep it simple and make them VIP 1, VIP 2 and General Admission?? I'll never understand the reason for the confusing ticket levels - but I just bought the most expensive one with merch, so figured that must be the first people in the door. Also booked a hotel right across the street from the venue for the night before and the night after (a great decision BTW).

Several months and it was time to go! I must say I had been in a pretty low mood for several weeks, even discussing with my friends whether I should go or just stay home. I was having health issues with a new medication, and I was generally depressed about the state of the world. I hadn't genuinely smiled or felt good in what seemed like an eternity. But I had a feeling Babymetal was just what I needed right now. Since I've been to a few other Babymetal shows and seen them from the barrier I took time to prepare for this experience. All the lessons learned from past shows really paid off, and this one went off without a bunch of problems. Ok, it's a week before the show, and I'm starting to get psyched up and I haven't really listened to Babymetal in weeks - not sure why - maybe I wanted to be depressed. So, I put in the Legend MM Night 2 blu-ray that night and it was like my attitude did a complete 180-degree turn. I was smiling, dancing, even tearing up at the beauty of The One and Arkadia. No more tears, no more pain, no more cry - Now, for your dream! For your faith! For your life! - these words were what I needed to hear. This was going to be great.

Drove to Des Moines on Tues, met a friend in KC for BBQ lunch and made it to the hotel around 5pm. Stayed overnight and woke up Wed excited for the show. It was like torture to stay in my room until 3pm before heading out to queue in line. It was about 35F outside and I didn't want to get in line to early and just sit there freezing my ass off. I headed over around 3pm and it was a 5 min walk across the street from the hotel. About a dozen people were already queuing and I joined them. Met some really nice people, got some fan made souvenirs include a Babymetal poker chip from one guy, which was cool as hell (sorry I am very bad at remembering names!). We queued until about 5pm when the venue let us inside to stand in line in the lobby until around 6pm. I brought a clear 12x12x6 backpack with me which had everything except the kitchen sink in it. Cough drops for sore throat (from singing my heart out), candy for energy, battery powered neck fan to keep me cool, couple of pouches of water to sneak in, Babymetal towel to swing during PaPaYa, A pair of heart shaped red glasses to wear during Ratatata, some medication (in case I had a sick spell), a big, sealed bottle of water. Yeah, I'm a little over prepared - but for me it can make the difference between a great night and a complete disaster.

They let us in and were checking our bags right at the entry door - either you got your bag checked or you had to walk thru a metal detector. They wanted me to empty my bag on the table and started poking around in it with a drum stick to see if there was anything solid inside. I started taking the items out of the top and then told them I have diabetes and need to have water and candy for my blood sugar - she looked right at my two pouches of water (the kind you hide in your pockets to sneak in) - and said OK go on thru! I was in and in with the stuff I knew would help me survive the intensity of the front row. One thing they were doing which I thought was very good - before they opened the doors to go inside the venue staff said they would be confiscating all "gifts" and stuffed animals to give to the girls...which was a nice way of saying throw it in the trash. BUT the great thing about that is; they did a good job at confiscating ALL the stuff people had been throwing on stage at all the previous shows. Nothing was thrown on stage - at least from my vantage point - and that was actually a good thing in my opinion, because the girls didn't have to stop and deal with it. One stupid thing they did was make us pour out our water bottles and put everything in a cup - I think this is so fucking stupid. I'm sure someone will argue the logic behind this, but I could throw a cup just as easy as a bottle of water and the cup would fling shit all over everyone. I guess a bottle of water would make a heavier missile if launched at the stage but if you're in the VIP entry group, who in the fuck is going to throw a water bottle at them after paying nearly $300 for your ticket? Anyway, I kind of know why they did it - it just pissed me off to end up buying a $6 can of Liquid Death water and have them pour it in a cup, which tied up one of my hands until drank. Once we were inside, they lined us up before the entry doors and the line wrapped around the bar in the lobby, so I purchased the water and accepted that was how it was.

Now it terms of staying hydrated at the barrier - I think these venues have FINALLY learned that if they aren't going to let people have their own sources of water, they should provide them water if you are on the rail. Why? Well, I guess they figured out it sure beats having to deal with people passing out and a ton of medical emergencies. So the staff at the front between the barrier and stage where gladly handing out dixie cups of water to us. They were so cool about this too. They would get us a small cup of water if we asked and would walk along the front offering cups of water to people. Then they'd come along later to collect the cups (so they didn't end up on the floor or being thrown on stage). I made sure to tell the staff exactly how much I appreciated them doing this - it was an excellent idea - and I needed several cups of water (even though I had some of my own in my bag).

As we cleared security, we were given a paper wristband based on our entry level, had our names and IDs checked off a list, then given our VIP merch. I was pretty happy with the VIP merch this year; it was actually good and usable. We got a BM logo fanny pack and inside the pack was a BM logo beanie which was pretty high quality (and will be used by me a lot!), there was a BM pin you could put on your shirt with the logo in front of the US flag and of course the VIP tour badge and laminate. The lanyard for the VIP badge was pretty cool too, all black with red BM logos on it.

We were let in the auditorium doors and despite ALL the warnings from the staff that no one needs to run, there is plenty of barrier space for everyone (literally like only 40 people in VIP 1 group) - fucking people ran anyway. So that meant everyone else have to run. I knew where I wanted to be and got the exact spot I was hoping for. I was directly in front of where the little mini-platform would be placed on the right side of the stage (facing the stage) - I call this the Moa platform because she seems to be on the right more often than not. But on the last tour (and on this one) they were trading sides so much, it can no longer exclusively be called Moa's side. I'd been watching the fan cam videos in the week leading up to the show, to see where the best places were for getting to joke around and have some cool interactions with the girls. Moa's platformed seemed like a solid pick - and I wasn't disappointed!!!

Since they let the VIP 1 (called Priority Entry w/ merch) The wait from getting to the barrier at 6:30pm until the first act started at 8pm was looonnnnggggggg. Thank God people are so cool. I started talking to my neighbors to pass the time - and I met a guy from Hungary (kisvig on X) standing to my left. He had been travelling to many shows on this tour starting in Chicago (I think) and this was the last one before he had to head back to Europe. He was travelling with the Japanese fans that go to nearly every show. I think he said he'd seem them over 50 times, including the arena shows in Japan, like Legend MM and such. We talked about a bunch of stuff - actually I probably did the majority of the talking, I am like that. I also met a guy that was travelling the entire tour to see them, he was handing out stickers, sorry can't think of name. He also had some BM logo poker chips which were really freaking awesome, and I was able to get one. Babymetal fans are the greatest, hands down!!!

To the show - Scene Queen came out first. I wasn't really into it, but a lot of people were. She was really good; her voice was on point and the band was super hyped. But I can't say much about her songs because I don't know them, mostly a mix of female rapping over some super heavy riffs. The bass was hitting hard. Too HARD actually. I love bass, having grown up listening to a lot of rap and being the kid cruising around in the 90's with the two 12-inch Rockford subs in the trunk. But this bass was so intense it almost knocked my heartbeat out of synch and caused me to have an arrythmia on the spot (just kidding but it felt like that). Maybe I'm getting old, but damn, the bass was pounding me square in the chest so hard that I was almost having difficulty breathing. Guess that's a casualty of having nothing between you and the massive subs under the stage 3 ft in front of you. I was kind of glad when the bass heavy songs were over. I think overall they sounded good, the mix wasn't bad at all, they had a fanbase in attendance that gave the singer good reactions. She didn't really deviate from the normal things she had said at other shows, which I saw snippets of on youtube. Last year I saw Metalocalypse open for BM and that set a high standard for me in terms of kick-ass opening acts (yes, I know they were co-headliners even though I consider them opening).

Then came Babymetal

Babymetal Death opened up and the crowd went nuts. The girls were magnificent. So happy. I think they were smiling and laughing the entire time they were on stage. I've seen four other shows from the barrier - and I really think this was the happiest I've ever seen them when performing. They were relaxed, joking around and not so strict to keeping serious faces while performing. Their dancing was on point and smooth, I think they were so busy interacting with the crowd that they had to scramble a bit to get back to their designated spots for some of the choreography - but you'll get no complaints from me on that! I mentioned in another post on here how I got to record a message for Babymetal, so I'll briefly mention that. I'd seen on other posts that a guy in a Babybones costume was recording fan messages for Babymetal at other shows. I thought that I'd like to tell them how happy they make me, and how they pulled me out of the pit of despair once again a few weeks ago with their music, lyrics and joy. So I figured a concise way to do that was to say "Babymetal is Happiness". And I actually got to give them that message. I think it was before the show even started, Babybones was walking down the area between the barrier and the stage. Yes he was 100% official and 100% part of the crew - there would be no other way to get access to the space in front of the barrier. I didn't notice him (or her?) until he was a few people down from where we were. When he got to our spot, I told him I definitely wanted to record a message. With the biggest smile I could make, I threw up my fox sign and exclaimed "BABYMETAL IS HAPPINESS!!!!" - Babybones seemed to really like this. He nodded in agreement and gave me a big thumbs up before moving down the line. Check out my other post if you want to know my feelings on this recorded message - but I'm going to imagine the girls got to see the messages before taking the stage - whether they did or not who really know - but then again WHY would they be asking fans to record a message FOR Babymetal?!? So I'll believe they watch the messages before the show starts to get pumped up. No real proof but fun to assume.

So they came out and did Babymetal Death - and they were just soooooo happy. Wow their outfits look so great up close. The detail on those costumes is astonishing. The layers of leather, the colors and the rainbow piping - it was something else to see them up and close. And then the fact that these girls are standing (and a couple times sitting) less than 4 feet away from you - it was just mind blowing. I don't think other people get it or understand, but hopefully this fanbase does. These are performers that stand in front of SOLD-OUT arenas and just absolutely kill it. They command a stage in front of tens of thousands back in Japan. They go out and hypnotize and entire auditorium of fans who go absolutely crazy for them. But in the big arena shows there is a degree of separation from them. A big gap between the raised platform they are performing on and the front row of the m'osh pit. On these shows in America (and in Europe) you are an amazing 3-4 feet away from these incredible giant legends of music. It can't be overstated enough how incredible that is. It is so incredible. Then to have them notice you and interact, or even joke with you?!?!? HOLY SHIT. I have the blu-rays of most of their Japanese arena shows - and to put it in perspective in terms of accessibility - this is what makes these shows so damn special.

So here was Moa right in front of me doing Babymetal Death, and I was dying but in a good way. As previously mentioned, I had the barrier spot directly in front of the mini-platform on the right side - so there were so, so, so many interactions with them. I could go through and list the songs they played and discuss the sound or presentation of the songs - but that is your standard show review - one thing you may not get in a show review is the actual experiences up front, so I'll highlight those. The greatest thing is the time you get with the performers who are truly enjoying themselves so much. They want to come over and stand on the platform and sit or kneel on the platform and say Hi to us. Their smiles were so BIG I almost wondered if they were enjoying it MORE than I was. I think so. These guys aren't a normal band, they are an experience. And they are not some public social media star who over-exposes their entire life to everyone on the internet. They keep their private life private - and that is what makes getting to see them and interact such a special moment. They aren't over-exposed, you aren't sick of seeing them everywhere, they don't have to apologize for anything they did or said, they are very down to earth, very humble and very grateful for the stardom and attention they are getting. Believe me it is genuine. Either their onstage personas are real - or they are the best actressess in the entire world! I mean I can't even express just how happy they were to be up there on stage performing for us - it was so real, so genuine, it is why I absolutely love Babymetal.

Performance interactions: Multiple times Moa came over and stood on the platform in front of us. Each time she glanced down at the front row, smiled and waved happily. I'll be realistic and say it was "in my area" and not entirely directed at me - but a couple of times it actually was! People that aren't into Babymetal as much as I am will probably not get how incredible this was. Like I mentioned earlier these are sold-out arena performers - highly inaccessible - joking around with a fan from Kansas in the front row. And I was not all calm, cool and collected, let me tell you. I was a mess!! I was screaming and making gestures and yelling their names - just like everyone else around me. I did record some interactions on video so I'll get them posted on a youtube channel shortly to back up my story I'm telling. One thing I did not want to do is stand there and record the whole time - I can see plenty of kick-ass front row video from a ton of good fan cams. What I wanted to record was the interactions, the individuals, the happiness and joy they were exuding. So none of my recordings is over 2mins, none of them are entire songs, they are mostly 1 min or less snippets of Moa and Momo coming over and being Moa and Momo directly in front of me. I did record a front row perspective of a couple songs for maybe a min or longer - but I didn't want to hold my camera up and just record a whole song. I wanted to be in the moment and just get a snippet to remember.

So back to interactions - Moa came over once and I was screaming "MOA!!!", she looked directly at me and put her fingers to her lips like she was saying "shhhhh" then she winked and jumped off the platform running in the other direction. Oh. My. Fucking. God. 50+ year old man here melting into a puddle of gibbering fanboy. When they did Metali, Momo came over and sat down on the mini platform, she was smiling and waving at everyone - then she looked directly at me - and for some dumb reason I was making the "Ok" sign with my hand when she told everyone to get low - she made the Ok sign back to me and then held both of her hands up to her eyes like she was making binoculars to look down at us. I actually caught that on video because I was holding my camera with my free hand. I felt several times they had all glanced in the direction we were standing and smiled. I'm sure it was in the area of myself and the other die-hard fans around me, but when you're that close you can make out the line of sight in which they are looking - at it was right at the area we were standing multiple times. I brought a pair of heart shaped red sunglasses like Moa wears in the RATATATA video which I thought they would appreciate. Turns out they did. I hadn't seen other fans wearing them in fan videos, so maybe this was something they hadn't seen yet? I'm sure if anyone has read this far and knows I'm wrong they'll say so. But I put those bad boys on over my glasses during RATATATA - and Su, Moa and Momo all noticed. I'm pretty sure I saw Su point in my direction and Moa laughed. When Moa came over she pointed down at me and gave a big nod of approval. Momo came over next, made the glasses gesture with her fingers again, and laughed while standing next to the platform. I was literally ecstatic.

Ok so there is my gushing fanboy account of the show. This is super long but I wanted to write it. I'm sure there are some people will think nothing of these stories or that I was making it up. Don't really care about that as much as letting the true fans who know, know, and just how much fun I had. Everyone should know just how incredible Babymetal is and that our love of them is so justified. These concerts make memories that will last a lifetime for me. I have so much more to say but I've been typing this for an hour or so, I'm going to wrap it up - but feel free to ask questions and I'll try to respond. Also may add some edits if more comes to mind.

Was anybody able to get a jersey in 2X?

The merch infographic said up to 2X but when I got to the show they only went up to large :/

Seems like a huge oversight because no offense meant, lots of the people I saw at my concert were bigger than a large. Myself included.

Who coined the name kawaii metal?

The genre is often credited as having been INVENTED by Babymetal, and I've seen them mention it in older interviews, but who was the first person to announce that the genre is outright called kawaii metal?

Thank you, kind stranger

My ticket was cancelled last minute for some reason, so I had accepted I wasnt gonna be able to go to the OKC show. But one of the redditors on this sub offered me their ticket and asked for nothing in return. I dont know if you wanted to be named but I still want to publicly thank you.

It means the world to me, and I had a great time, its a shame you couldn't go yourself. Its people like you that give me hope for humanity

A message for Babymetal

At the show Wed in Des Moines Iowa I had the opportunity (like many of you) to record a message for Babymetal. Before their set started, the guy in the Babybones costume was walking down the front row between the barrier and the stage. He was holding a camera and a notepad that said "record a message for Babymetal" (or something very similar). I've read on here that this has happened at other shows - so I had thought about what I wanted to say and was ready for it.

When Babybones got to us, I told him I'd gladly record a message. Giving them the biggest grin possible and throwing up my fox sign I said "Babymetal is HAPPINESS!!". Babybones nodded in agreement and gave me a huge thumbs up. Maybe that will make it into a video montage for the N. American tour, who knows? I'll be the guy with the Babymetal headband and the 2000 foot wide grin across his face.

I want to believe that the girls actually get to see what he records before the shows. Maybe it's to show them the type of crowd, or to get them pumped up to perform, or to give them encouragement. Maybe no one will see those recordings except Babymetal themselves. I know it's speculation and I have no idea if they saw my message - but I'd like to believe they did.

Why? Because, even though I was directly in front of the mini platform on the right side of the stage (where they usually go), I felt they were very very happy to come over many times. Because it's so surreal I'm telling myself it must be my imagination, but I swear I felt they were smiling at where I was many many times during the show. Even when they were center stage, I noticed Moa, Momo and even Su, at different times, looking in our direction and grinning. I watched a fancam video recorded from the balcony last night, just to see if it was my imagination. And it really seemed like they looked in our direction with such big smiles a lot of times. Or I could have fanboy bias and just seeing what I want to...hard to discern right now.

Normally I would think it was just the front row interactions every fan gets (this is my 4th barrier show) if I hadn't got to record that message before the show. So many times Moa and Momo came over and stood directly in front of us (or sat on the platform) and looked down, and smiled, and waved, and echoed the gestures I was making. Even once Moa came over looked right at me - of course I was screaming MOOOAAAA - and made the "shhhhh" gesture (where she puts her finger to her lips). I could have freaking died happy at that moment.

I've seen many interviews with the girls, where they talk about being able to make so many people happy - I wanted them to know they succeeded.

So maybe this show I was able to give them back a tiny fraction of the joy and happiness they've given me over the last few years. I'm going to choose to believe they saw the message and it made them even happier to see how happy their performance made me - since I was right there in front with the biggest smile imaginable. I may be a dreamer but it's moments like this that make Babymetal performances life long experiences.
