What do you guys think are the best top 5 non benders (no mecha tanks)
Katara has done nothing to prove that she is above Unalaq, Pakku, and Minghua as waterbenders. I also think she is a lot closer to the very good waterbenders like Kya, Desna, Eska, and Tonroq than many think.
Katara is not a very good fighter in the traditional sense. She fights more like a wizard than a martial artist. Many other fighters in both ATLA and LOK use their bending as an extension of their martial arts. Katara doesn't really have a martial arts background. Katara tends to fight very defensively and kind of just picks people a part with her waterbending. I think this is why she was able to beat Azula. Azula is a very aggressive bender who is always on the attack. Katara's fighting style just countered Azula's.
There is nothing wrong with this as she is able to beat most average benders. And a couple of wins against Azula is impressive no matter what. But I think this style would not translate as well against other powerful benders.
The counterpoint to this is that Katara has had to become a very creative bender. She is forced to use various niche techniques to make up for lack of martial prowess. I think this will only be a positive in future fights.
One downside to her lack of martial arts background is that her attacks lack velocity. I think this stems from her not using her legs all that much when she fights. The one time I saw her really use her legs to deliver a powerful and precise strike was when she fought Hama. In LOK, we see water benders adding significant strength and speed to their attacks as they use hips and legs to create torque and add energy to their strikes.
Overall, I still think Katara is one of the best benders in both series. But I think people seriously overrate her and think she is the strongest waterbender ever with zero competition. I honestly think she probably loses to Minghua and Unalaq 7/10. I also think she would lose to a lot of characters people say she would beat.
TLDR: Katara is a very good bender, but she is not as good as people make her out to be.
Edit: I did say it was an unpopular opinion.

Jianzhu won against Xu Ping An, other earth benders, and 5,000 other Yellow Necks at the battle of Zhulu Pass. Jianzhu knocked out Xu Ping An and efficiently dealt with the earth benders which is already impressive considering Xu Ping An is a spamming lightning bender who would have caught Jianzhu off guard but 5,000 more opponents. They were non benders but the Kang Shen which were Yellow Necks non benders were very determined still. I know Jianzhu didn't incapacitate them all in one battle but still defeated and terroized 5,000 of them and got them to surrender and even pleaded for their lives. Maybe Jianzhu only defeated their leader and they were all intimidated but they definitely wouldn't stop there. Jianzhu also didn't receive any help because the earth kingdom army didn't want to and Tagaka also stated how the entire uprising was crushed by one man (Jianzhu). Did he have a secret earth bending ability that immediately allowed him to win or was it so deadly that everyone else surrendered?
What are your top 5 favorite fights?
One of the best things about the Avatar series is the fights. Some are massive set pieces where hundreds of fighters are going against each other. There are epic duels between the strongest benders in the world. Or our favorite protagonist going against against your average no name fodder. I wanted to rank my favorite fights.
While I love massive set pieces as much as the next guy, I wanted to rank some of the more intimate fights. Though don't let my parameters affect your rankings.
The Crystal Catacombs: This fight is awesome. We see how far Katara and Zuko have progressed as fighters as well as how Aangs new abilities don't translate into fighting prowess. I think this set up the Last Agni Kai well as it showed us how Azula struggles against Katara's more defensive style. The only thing that brings it down is how awful Aang fights in this battle. This fight has plenty of low lights for the young Avatar.
Mako, Bolin & Kai vs. The Dai Li: This is probably the shortest fight on the list clocking in at less than a minute. But it is intense, the music is great, and the bending brothers work great together in this comfined space. Kai also got his vengeance on the Dai Li agent that was mistreating him, which was very satisfying.
Aang & Appa vs. Zuko and Lila: This fight is often forgotten about since it was in a pretty lackluster season 1 episode, but it is my favorite fight in ATLA. It showcased both combatants' skills, and the fighters were evenly matched. It was intense, yet the small intermission with Iroh being Iroh brought some levity. To add to this, watching Appa straight up fighting the Shirshu was fun and added something a little extra to the fight.
Korra vs. Kuvira: This is my favorite season ending duel. Korra and Kuvira battling it out in the control room of the giants mech was awesome. It was intense, the music was great, and neither woman showed any desire to back down. The fight being in a metal dome also allowed Kuvira to keep up with Korra, so I thought the environment played really well into the overall fight.
Korra & Lin vs. The Lieutenant and Equalist: This is my favorite fight in both series. We got to see what a metal bender like Lin can really do, and how she used her cables in this fight was awesome to watch. Then you have Korra, who is an absolute beast kicking ass with only firebending. Then you have the amazing music and the cracking glass that adds so much tension to the fight and foreshadow it's ending. This fight really tied together a very goof first half of a season.
This ranking is highly subjective. Please let me know what you think and what your list is.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
Spoilers for The Reckoning of Roku novel and Avatar: The Last Airbender!
There's gonna be spoilers!
Sacred Cave
In the reckoning of Roku, the sacred cave boosts bending a thousandfold as it's described. In the spirit world, two spirits clashed causing an enourmous amount of spiritual energy but not trying to subdue the other. It was described as a like a natural disaster. On the equinox, the spirits would return since the equinox was a fulcrum which caused a supernatural phenomenon so intense it passed on to the physical world as well. The spiritual energy in the cave enhances the bending.
Three water benders could bend a fog that covers an entire island that spread miles wide and long, which Gyatso said would take hundreds of benders. Roku and Sozin could generate iridescent flames and Roku could almost create lightning from his hands. Roku destroyed the cave that is around the size of the fire nation palace. It's described as hundreds of feet deep and Roku covered it with fire. Waterbenders can easily pull moisture out of air to encase someone in ice before they react. Roku fell victim to this but sent a shockwave with sapphire fire to get out that knocked adults down oh and this was an accident. He also raised the temperature of the cave that he passed out as well.
Sozins Comet
Ozai described sozins comet as a hundred suns but many people seem to believe it's oh 100x power. A hundred suns would simply be a hundred sources to draw their fire bending from, it wouldn't exactly be 100x more powerful but would be very destructive as we saw. An invasion during sozin's comet ended an entire nation, culture, and ethnicity. Sozin knew of the comet by Wan Shi Tong's library as well. Iroh made a giant fireball that broke Ba Sing Se's outer which took dozens of Dai Li agents to do. And also Ghazan didn't break the outer wall, he broke an inner wall. Ozai burned down an entire forest and was planning on the earth kingdom as well with Sozins comet though after the comet was over, I think he would just continue burning it down. Jeong Jeong created fire walls that are dozens of feet tall with ease and levitated with a flame under his feet. The great comet becomes a great heat source when it enters the atmosphere, enhancing firebenders a hundredfold.
Which ones do you think enhances more and why?
I mean we've seen Kyoshi split continents with her earthbending and Yangchen could scream so loud that it caused hurricanes. And these are just 2 Avatars, imagine all 82 of them. Yet Aang's AS never displayed these kinds of feats with any of its bending. Sozin's Comet as well never felt as powerful as it should be. Ozai said it's supposed to make firebenders 100 times stronger, yet onscreen, it looked like they were just 10-20 times stronger. If these 2 power ups were actually as powerful as stated then Aang's firebending should have caused a nuclear sized explosion since it's being enhanced by both SC and the AS, making it 8,200 time stronger.
You are free to say your own thoughts but here's mine.
Seen Before but curious to know the extent:
Sound bending: Aang used it to amplify his bison whistle in tales of Ba Sing Se and Yangchen screams as well to almost deafen someone. What do yall think can happen with sound bendingv
Hypersensitivity: Most likely nearly almost a majority of all air benders can do this but how far can they sense? If you don't know, Daw used it in Original Airbenders because of his shaved head and it's feeling the air around themselves. I would like to see a blind airbender that cant see with its eyes that can sense even the smallest particles in the air. And there's a chance an airbender can detect if someone is lying through how they react
Vacuum: We seen >!Yangchen!< and kinda Zaheer (Maybe Gyatso) do this but besides taking away oxygen and stopping things from happening like bending, what else can it be used for?
Poison bending: We seen a red lotus member bend mercury (a metallic poison) but what else could you bend that is poison? Can a waterbender bend liquid poison and make it into a mist?
Weather Manipulation/Bending: Aang and Katara bent clouds to change shape but didn't actually control the weather. However, >!In Asho's story, waterbenders that are amplified like a thousandfold can control the weather but it seemed you needed to be very powerful since it's compared to commanding typhoons, sinking or producing islands, or firebenders that can move the sun (even his story had his expectation to learn how to obtain extremely powerful bending like that was proven false but the story itself wasn't proven inaccurate.)!<
Reasonably Possible
Body heat manipulation: Heat manipulation already exists from Sozin redirecting heat and >!Roku heating up the temperature in the environment around him very dangerously!< But what about body heat? Maybe if a fire bender gets close enough they can change the heat of a human being if someone won't stop him but I wouldn't say by much but it can still lead to death. Kyoshi managed to freeze Yun's organs by touching his chest so another situation can happen but with fire bending. This one is probably possible.
Maybe Possible
Burble Sensing: Basically an waterbending version of seismic sense. Water benders can theoretically do the same thing and can see all the fish in a body of water. Maybe Ice as well. But could they sense someone is lying by it? They could detect someone's blood is moving differently when lying because they get nervous but they can't bend it only feel it move unusually when lying. I would say this might be possible.
Heat detection: Fire benders can feel heat but even more to a sense that they can feel heat on someone's body that they'll get to a different temperature when the person is lying. Similar to earth bending, you can detect if someone can be lying to an extent but I'd prefer if that's a rarer skill but fire benders can still feel heat without physically feeling it. Basically a firebending version of seismic sense. A little possible but it could not be.
Boiling Water: This seems to be a little more popular one but here's what I think. Benders can change the chemical structure of their element but not directly change their temperature but can change it by changing the functionality. They can of course ice bend but would they be able to boil water? Katara made mist, not necessary steam but that seemed to be a skilled ability since only her and Taqukaq (Roku's waterbending teacher who was said to be the best water bender in his time) could do it but Taqukaq made fog which is thicker and denser. I think it could be possible but it's rare and only skilled enough water benders could do it. But if you think about boiling water in someone's blood, the difficulty is basically multiplied if we can assume boiling water is an already rare skill, blood bending is another extremely rare skill. I don't think that's possible to boil someone's blood. This one can be possible but I don't know what's the restraints of it.
Gas Generation: This could be called Gas Bending or Gas manipulation but that's basically all air bending but here's what I mean. Can an Airbender change a gas to be flammable or poisonous? Or can an air bender change the air so there's no oxygen but not necessarily a vaccumn like >!Yangchen!< and Zaheer but there's still air but not oxygen in it (there's 21% oxygen in air.) This one could be possible but I don't know if it's likely but it is interesting.
Unlikely to be Possible
Bone bending: Now you might come at me and say bone bending is canon but it actually isn't to this point. What is canon is extending your life time but the description of the process seemed more spiritual than bending. The two people who have done this (assuming Kyoshi did and not somehow had a very lucky lifespan and learned from Lao Ge since he was her mentor) were earth benders. The theory y'all might already know is bending your bones so they'll get back in place and not age or the cells itself. But what do you think about controlling another person like blood bending? But the reason I think this is unlikely is because of how little minerals are in bones. A small amount of iron is in our body but that's like metal bending in blood bending but extreme since you have to metal bend and blood bending like bending in someone's body but there's way more water than Iron. This one is not really likely to be possible but the iron has a 99.9% chance to be impossible.
Light manipulation/bending: Could fire benders or air benders can manipulate light like photons from electromagnetic radiation or refracting light? I wouldn't say it's possible but not like light itself but to cause a different frequency with bending.
Aura Bending: Now this is an energy bending technique since energy isn't an element but can be bent if given the ability. We know Aura can actually be seen and >!that's actually how the fire nation used to discover the avatar but got less spiritual. Someone discovered Roku to be the avatar by reading his aura.!< Ty Lee and Kya also read peoples Auras. Kya said Bumi's Aura seemed different when he got air bending. Could someone bend someone's aura to have a different natural personality or maybe change another persons bending to another element if they have genetics like Bolin and Mako. I would say this probably is not likely to be possible because we don't know how much energy is Aura or if Aura contains energy.

I see a lot of discussions about how Katara stacks up against other benders.
Is it power and raw precision? I don't see any specific and cool moves, mainly just really strong basic waterbending moves like watership or water jets, with the occasional icebending (in combat, not utility)
Her physicals aren't the worst either, like reaction time and speed. And, she's relative to Toph as a bender. But I was just curious on why y'all think she ranks so high (in particular with other novel benders or LoK benders), I agree, but I'm looking for some feedback.

(Where Aang’s AS went nuts after Katara was sucked underground)
Both have one avatar state move in each element up their sleeve. (Like Korra using air when she forced Unalaq out of the portal area, with air.)( And how Roku used his AS to make a hole in one volcano to drain the lava)
Things to remember
-we’ve seen Roku lavabend outside of the AS. So that means that it is an option for him.
-neither know anything about the other opponent
-starting distance: 40 feet
-can’t use the AS move right out the gate!
Personally, given whats said by roku I think this drastically increased her estimated firebending prowess, especially since she wasn't born with it, and also says something about Zuko, Iroh and Ozai.
Here's the extract:
"Nationals, the boys were already familiar with the tales of heroic firebending masters who could breathe fire, produce blue flames, or channel lightning. But through the ancient texts, they discovered even rarer firebending skills such as the power of flight, the ability to make a distant target explode, ways to harness the power of a comet, and even a method to extend one’s life indefinitely. Sozin was convinced it was possible to learn these powers, but Yasu always maintained they were pure fiction"
"Too bad Sozin couldn’t come,” Yasu said as he stripped down to his undergarments, then tossed his sleeping robes aside. Their friend was on lockdown after incinerating a few centuries-old tapestries at the Academy while attempting to teach himself to firebend blue flames."
"Roku flared with a sudden burst of sapphire flames that evaporated the ice and radiated outward like a shockwave, knocking the Waterbenders down. Roku’s breath hitched—he’d never generated fire so hot it burned blue. And he had only meant to free himself, not to harm them."
"Everything in Roku wanted to go on the offensive, wanted to release the energy building within to neutralize the threat. He could end this in the blink of an eye. But the blue flames he’d produced earlier gave him pause. Letting too much power flow through him might be as impossible to control as a wild dragon."
And Finally:
"A rumbling explosion broke Roku’s concentration, and he snapped back into the Human World just in time to see a blinding burst of blue flames burn out near the entrance to the cavern. The blast’s shockwave arrived an instant later, and Roku bowed his head and guided the scorching air around himself so that the worst of it slid past harmlessly. As soon as it did, he lifted his gaze again. In the distance was an immense, charred impact crater—with someone lying unconscious at its center. “Sozin?” he said, shocked. Sozin’s eyes were closed, and his body was still. Sozin must have stepped into the cavern and used his fire-bending without fully realizing that he’d be unable to control the flow of energy"
So this greatly improves azulas feat of blue fire, Roku and Sozin are able to produce blue flames while amped in this cave, and if they don't control it properly for even an instant, it can backfire and harm them immensely.
We know blue fire is the hottest in the verse now, and sozin and roku weren't able to produce them under normal conditions. It's pretty much thought of pure fiction.
We also know that a simple Amp, like sozins comet is not enough to produce blue flames, which is why zuko, iroh and ozai couldn't produce it during the comet, it also takes an large amount of control.
I think it turns her into probably the most talented character, and the most skilled character in the show, and can be put on a level higher than tophs seismic sense or irohs lightning redirection, as we all three have been used before, but azulas is the most special.

I’ve seen this a lot lately and I got to ask,why do people think korra creating a spirit portal is the strongest feat? ,not trying to be disingenuous or downplay korra at all as it’s still very impressive I’m just curious why people view this as the best feat in the verse.
From what was shown korra blocked kuviers mec lazer and it not only destroyed part of republic city but it also created a new spirit portal in the Center.
And while this is very impressive, to me I don’t see how this is the strongest feat as portal creation isn’t really a strength/AP feat,it’s more like a hax/ability. And if you look at the actual damage it did,it at most destroyed a little part of the city(granted in the comics korra did state that if she didn’t stop it,it could have potentially wiped out the entire city).
Now to me personally the strongest avatar feat is done by kuruk or kyoshi as they have destroyed/created islands.
But yeah what do you think,do you think this portal creation feat is overrated by the community or no?
Why didn't Aang or Korra have the feats the previous avatars had? When they have their flashbacks they do these amazing things like kyoshi splits land. Why didn't they have a large feat? sure Aang fought the firelord but that is not the same as splitting land or fighting a volcano or taking the air out of a room like yangchen, same for Korra. Were they just not at that caliber?
