Hey, I just read the general advice post for which shoes to choose but still have some questions. I measure a bit over an 8, so I aim for 8.5's, but I also have slightly wide feet (especially my toe box) and tall arches. This is both on the bottom of the foot like the actual arch, but also the same area on top is pronounced. So far, I use "high profile" insoles for that but also sometimes get pain at the top equivalent part of my foot still (Maybe I need to lace differently?)
Im seeking two different pairs of shoes realistically. For one: im an infantryman in the Army, so we wear running shoes every day to do a variety of crossfit style stuff and also 4-6 mile runs (or longer on occasion). But yea, we run a lot still, 2-3x a week for those distances at a decent pace. It could be on any surface, it depends - smooth concrete, rough, slightly gravely, grass....and the main issue I also have is they tend to fall apart due to the thin materials used. Also in the case of shoes like Hoka's, that plastic "shank" they put around the heel portion of the shoe for rigidity breaks through the fabric for me after a bit. I dont get paid a lot so its kind of expensive if any brands are known for durability.
For my second shoe, I was interested in getting into longer distance running, like half-marathon and beyond, but the roads I have access to may still be gravely rather than nicely paved for that sorta thing.
I also notice the tread wears out slightly faster on the outside edges of my shoes if thats indicative of my running style, but its only slight and I dont think its the cause of any pain? Oh, and I do tend to use ones with a decent amount of padding though just because someone said its better for your knees. IDK.
Lastly, I know some people around here on Base get custom orthotics...like its an option "for free", but would I use those for running, or stick with the running branded stuff? I think the ones that get made for you are a harder plastic? Maybe just for boots and regular shoes? Anyone know?
BTW, all this info I got on my measurements was from "Fleet Feet". I believe they're a small-ish chain store but none of them have watched me run or anything, just stand on a machine. While they do have a great selection, sometimes I dont see certain popular shoes that are rec'd online in there, or maybe they just dont come in wide so they dont mention?
Just figured Id ask for advice. It would mean a lot to me to get some help because I've found myself investing a lot of time and money into this. Also I get "graded" on my running...so anything helps.
BTW: ive tried : Hoka Bondi 8's - pretty solid actually but fell apart a bit.
Hoka "arahis" or something, those broke the plastic heel shank quickly
Asics "gel-kayano 31s", the bottom padding delaminated almost immedatiately and i kept having to superglue um back togeather
Brooks - unknown model.
Thanks for any help guys, hope this isn't a dumb question or too specific.
Hoka Bondi 8
Backstory I’m 6’3 175 pounds. 24 year old male. I’ve been athletic my whole life I’m shredded and defined. Played football and weight lifted my whole life. As of 2023 I decided to use my college degree and go to Marine Corps Officer school, which is known for lots of running. Marines in general are known for running miles and miles. So for the last year I have picked up running distance for the first time ever. I started with Brooks Glycerine and I loved them. I have high arches and super wide feet, so eventually I noticed after mile 4 on every run my toes would go numb. I’m guessing this is from the toe box being too tight and my high arches putting too much pressure on my toes. After these I tried Alrtas due to the more natural toe box shape, tho they didn’t have enough cushion or heel drop. Then I tried Bondi 8s. I see more experienced runners all have bad things to say about them. After putting probably 400 miles on my first pair I actually liked them. I got the wide size and have been putting about 30 miles a week with them most I ever have. I went to get a new pair today wanted to try the Hoka Skylines with the Carbon Fiber but they didn’t have the wide size so I got the same ole Bondi 8s. Shoild I take them back?? What are you guys recommendations for wide foot guys? I also wear orthopedic inserts to help my high arches.
*forgot to add mens 12 wide
Basically I got some credit and want a pair of shoes mainly for just around the house (inside only).
I do have hip pain, am heavy, arch is slightly higher than normal but not enough to be considered high, have planters foot. I also don’t want a shoe that would make me roll my ankles outward.
I currently use Adizero SL2s as my daily trainer, and I'm really liking them. I've signed up for my first marathon in March 2025. My main goal is just to finish, secondary goal is to aim for around 4 hours. I've looked through the wiki, and as much as I'd love many shoes to rotate through, I just can't drop that cash. I'm hoping for advice on choosing a shoe I can use both for training (rotate with my SL2s) and for race day. Any recommendations?
I’ve a novablast 4 as a daily trainer and a Boston 12 for speed workouts. Running my first half marathon next month.
I wanted to try and get an endorphin pro 4 as a race day but the local running store didn’t have one and I got recommended to superblast 2. Ran a 8miler today on it. Not sure if it needs time to break in(I read multiple posts that SB2 doesn’t need a break in, works out of the box). I didn’t quite feel the energy return. It’s definitely better than NB4, but my Boston 12 is much snappier and gives a nice speed. I was exhausted earlier than usual with SB2.
What do y’all recommend as a race day shoe given this background? I can still swap out the SB2. Pushing for a 1hr50min. Garmin predicts the same right now. Don’t want to cross $225 as budget.
Anyone know what Superblast 2 colorways are coming up? And dates they will be available? I've seen references to an early November release but couldn't find the exact date or which colors they would be.
I think there was also a picture posted of a bunch of different ASICS shoes with a few new Superblast 2 colors but couldn't find details.
Running shoe for walking and running everyday?
Went get my feet scan.. now I know what my right foot toes always hurt when running. They also recommend stability shoes.. any suggestions?
If someone run 3 times a week,2 long run(slow)and 1 interval/tempo,its okay if he use normal shoes for the long run and the plated shoes for the speed session?besides cost i want to know if they will hurt your foot or you will be “used” to their spring and it will be hard to run faster with other shoes
First off: sorry if this is posted in the wrong place, I wasn't sure which was the best place for it, and you guys know your stuff from what I've read in here. Also sorry for the length, I have no idea what is relevant. The trainers I'm running in every session are New Balance 860 wide. My everyday shoes are vivo barefoot optimus 3 ( i think), and I've been wearing barefoot shoes casually and for gym sessions for many years with no issues.
I'm a big guy, 6'3" 302lbs (as of this morning down from nearly 400 at the start of the year) and I'm running a marathon in April. I've been running specifically for this since the end of July, but I'm not coming at exercise from nothing and this running is part of a weight loss plan that was put in action since February.
I used to train, up until a year or so before covid, 6 days a week; 2x 2h Taekwondo sessions, with 4x 2h gym sessions including a 2k run and 2k row as a warmup. my mental health declined and then covid happened and that lead to adding 50+% of my BW in about 3 years.
When i started properly running i bought the NB 860 after a foot size analysis showed I had 10.5 with high arches. Though the width was still not quite there so after several trying-ons I got the 11.5.
I had all the regular stuff when starting, like shin splints and knee and ankle pain, that a guy of my size was bound to get going from just 2 martial arts sessions a week to adding in runs 3x a week as well (i followed c25k). That all subsided reasonably quickly, as I do a lot of pre and re hab exercises. I was at the point where I could comfortably run 2x 7k and 1x 10k per week. Not fast, about 9:22 m/km, but comfortable enough that I wasn't broken the next day.
I had been doing this volume for several weeks with no issues at all. When suddenly after a break of a week, as I was away from home, I came back and started small (3k) with an aim of working back up to those same distances but with a higher cadence. Within 2k the arches of my feet were in so much pain I had to stop. This pain is a pressure, it does not feel like a muscular strain nor a tear. The pain is ONLY when running, in fact ONLY when landing. As soon as I stop to walk it's gone. I tried several runs at different paces and such, and all with same result. The worst day I got to 1800 meters and had to stop. What it feels like is my foot is compressing the foam so much that the last uncompressed area is the arch, which is then taking the initial impact from each step.
I've tried almost everything that can be tried without buying new shoes. I've tried; Foot strengthening exercises which didn't really seem to do much but I'll keep doing them. Tying the laces tighter and got a different kind of pain. Laces looser, and my foot slid around the shoe with no change in pain. Different thicknesses of socks, with no change. High arch support insoles (superfeet carbon), which seemed to help a bit, but were very painful to walk on during rests or after the run, its the same pressure pain type. Low arch supports (superfeet blue) which has helped the same amount as the others but walking on them during rests or post run is still painful in the same way. In all cases it feels like I have to run with my foot in a VERY supinated position, like I'm running on almost the side of my foot, to the point where the inside front of the shoe is not contacting the ground.
After a week or so of the pain I was recommended to get a gait analysis, which showed minor pronation in some neutral show I cant remember, and some heelstrike. The heelstriking was above what i would normally run with because i was silly and didn't set the treadmill to the speed I have been running at, and I didn't use the cadence I now do (165-170). I was also in jeans for some reason. The guy in the store recommended the shoes I already have, as well as Asics Gel-kayno, Brooks GTS Adrenaline ( i think) and some Saucony i can't remember. I tried all three for about 10 minutes each on the treadmill, over two sessions because the guy didn't have the Asics in stock at the time. Only the Asics didn't feel too tight, but that was at a size 12 and was almost causing me to trip.
A few weeks back I decided to add some swimming instead of one of the run days, to try and keep the fitness on track and reduce the time on my feet/ however this hasn't changed anything about the pain. I'm now barely able to run 5k on both of those other days. It's not a comfortable 5k which I'm sure has a knock on effect to my running form, injury likelihood ( I'm sure i can feel my ankle getting less stable by running like this) and has taken a significant toll on my mental health every time someone asks "hows the run training going?".
Am I going crazy? Is something wrong? Am i doing something wrong? Do I just need to buy new shoes? if so which? These ones have about 300km on them which seems far lower than the recommended distance before changing and I'd like to avoid the cost of buying a new pair just yet if i can. I know i will likely need to buy a new pair before the race, but I'd like to leave that until the new year when I'll be a bit lighter.
Thank you for reading this wall of text ( if you did) and any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
Hi, saw a good deal for the above two shoes and wish to purchase them, but am unsure about sizing, this will be my first Altras.
My feet is 27cm in length, I wear US 11.5 for Nike / Adidas / Xero, US 11 for Saucony. I tend to size up for the extra toebox room but rest of the foot is generally roomy fit.
Am eyeing US 10.5 since Altras are supposed to have wide toeboxes, wonder if that would work?
My daughter is finally big enough to fit into women's shoes so looking to get her an upgrade. She is women's size 5, normal arches and neutral (per the employee at the running store). At the running store she tried on a pair of brooks glycerin and ascis (but don't remember the model). She seemed to like both but was a bit indecisive haha. She will be using the shoes for general sports/walks/activities and hopefully working her way up to short runs. Any recommendations? Trying to keep the budget at $90 (since I know she will out grow them quickly). Thanks!
I see everywhere that the Boston 12s are "daily trainers," and good ones at that. However, I saw the label of "Suitable for: half/full marathon distance training," and I wondered whether or not it's good for running full 21k/42k distances at PB pace? I scoured this sub as best I could but I wanted some first-hand impressions of these shoes as a do-it-all shoe including races before I pull the trigger.
Sorry if I'm wrong and this is a repetitive question. Genuinely looking for answers here. I'm sick of buying full rotations lol
PS: Sorry r/RunningShoeGeeks and thanks to the mod team for pointing me to the right sub
So I’m a beginner and I run about thrice a week, and I want to be able to run 10Ks and Half Marathons in a years time. I’m looking for a daily trainer that can support both speed and easy runs and provides the right amount of cushion too. I’m considering the following options:
Nike Vomero 17 Adidas Supernova Rise Adidas Adizero SL2 ASICS Nimbus 26 ASICS Novablast 4
I tried on and liked Vomero and Nimbus due to the cushioning and I’m leaning towards the Vomero but I’m unsure if the cushioning isn’t good for me in the long run and would hamper the speed workouts?
Any help is appreciated since I’m a total noob to this haha!
I have an opportunity to get a pair of 1080 V12, for 45 euros .. are they still worth it? Anything better under 50 euros?
Hey runners! Looking for recommendations on max cushioned shoes that aren't the usual Pegasus. I'm hitting high mileage (training almost daily) and really need to prioritize knee protection and injury prevention. Been rotating between Pegasus and ZoomX for years but want to explore something new besides Nike.
Already tried On Cloudmonsters but they weren't for me. Any recommendations for super cushioned alternatives from other brands? My knees will thank you! 🏃♂️
Hello all, maybe someone can help. I'm trying to find a wide enough shoe, not just in the toe box but in the mid foot as well. I also use power step pinnacle wide which are very wide insoles. I had previously tried the New Balance 1080 v12 which were nice but not quite wide enough in the toe box for my power step insoles. They were 4e. I've also tried the 840v1 in a 2e(no 4e available at the time) and they seemed good in the middle but not enough width in the toe box probably due to the 2e instead of 4e.
My current options are:
New Balance More Trail v3
New Balance 880v14
Asics Gel Cumulus 26
All in 4e of course. Can anyone tell me which of these might be the widest in the toe box AND midsole please.
Hi,
I recently picked up some Salomon Genesis after not being an active runner for a long time. I've cheaped out on running shoes in the past and my legs paid the price, but these Salomon Genesis feel perfect for me - I have weirdly big arches and slim feet. I'm curious if anyone knows a similar fit and feel road shoe, I would love to stick with Salomon after this positive experience, but happy for suggestions from other brands too.
Also worth mentioning I'm a big fan of the quick laces with the little pocket, not sure if that's a Salomon specific thing or pretty generic, I've never had it on previous shoes.
Appreciate any help, thank you :)
I got me some novablast 4 in white moonrock and the colorway is fire. I just can't find out when they were released in this colorway? Does somebody have an idea how often asics refreshes the lineup? I'm asking this because I look out to get me some pair of nb5 aswell but I don't like the launch colors that much.
My girlfriend has been wearing the Nike Tempo next percent for over a year and they are already worn out, The main problem is that he liked them too much and I wanted to ask if anyone could give me any ideas on what other device I could replace it with.
She has Thin feet and that's why he really likes the Tempo Fit.
I hope you guys can give me a recommendation (Pd: we currently run half marathon and we're planning to run a full marathon this 2025).
Puma is currently on sale with both shoes planning to buy one of it. But I can't decide because I am waiting for the Black friday sale for adidas boston 12/ adios pro. But can you help me decide which one to choose for daily and okay for long run but still give comfort.
I'm looking for men's running shoes (10.5) with a narrow heal as well as a lot of support. I find brooks/asics to have a too wide a heal creating a lot of slipping
Basically, I want a running shoe that will first be good for sidewalks. I'm looking for something for all weather, so good traction on wet pavement is a plus but having some degree of waterproofing is even better. This is also because I want to use it for my daily commute to work (~25 min walk), so something that wouldn't leave me with wet feet if I accidently get caught in the rain would be amazing. Lately, and this seems to be hard to find with the other points: All black/a solid neutral color is ideal. Because I'll wear it to work, I'd like something that will look OK with work clothes if I don't have the time to change shoes. This seems to be the hardest thing to find as it seems like a lot of waterproof shoes are bright colored.
So to summarize, my ideal shoes are:
I think the best I've found are these: Terrex Soulstride Flow Gore-Tex Shoes However, I've heard these are better for trail running vs sidewalk, so I'm not sure. Any advice?
