Which turkey for Christmas dinner?

My husband says the meat of a Bronze Turkey is brown compared to regular turkey, which is white.

Does anyone know if this is true? First time cooking turkey and I'm not sure which to do.

Anyone got the ring alarm system?

Thinking of getting the ring alarm system for a house I'm moving into after Christmas as it's discounted a good bit at the moment for the black Friday sales. Just wondering if anyone has it and have any opinions? Also I read that home insurers in Ireland don't consider it an alarm system because it is not "serviced by a reputable person", is there any truth to that?

How did the Garrihy sisters become so famous?

People talk about them like they are the Irish Kardashians. They're constantly on magazines being called the Garrihy Girls like that's the brand they're pushing. Not hating, just curious. One of them had a soap role over 10 years ago, where did all the fame come from?

To fast or not to fast?

I've got a blood test at midday today. The locum doctor I went to said to fast but the receptionist as I was leaving said you don't need to anymore. I went to the doctor to ask for bloods to be checked as they haven't been done for years and I'm a 44 year old male. Google doesn't help really. I have to go straight to work afterwards so I'd prefer to eat now. Has anyone had bloods done recently and been told they don't need to fast?

Edit to add I will ask the doctor why the receptionist said that to me. I thought that maybe there's been advancements in how they test and that it's not required anymore.

Can’t breathe after coughing. Any similar experience or advice?

So I (M31) have had very mild and controlled asthma for as long as I can remember. I take my inhalers and never have any issues. About a month ago, I started feeling a little caught up in my chest and my breathing but didn’t think too much into it. Fast forward a week and I had developed a pretty constant, mainly dry cough so I went to my GP. He said it was maybe a chest infection and prescribed me a course of antibiotics (amoxicillin).

This didn’t really help at all and a week later I was feeling worse if anything. My cough was now much more mucusy or productive than it had been previously. I went back to the GP who said perhaps it is bronchitis and he put me on a course of steroids (deltacortril). Again, zero impact.

Just as I was finishing this course, I had a fright while at work. I knew I needed to cough so went to the toilet where I then had a big of a coughing fit (10-15 seconds of coughing that I can’t stop) which led to me getting sick into the toilet. I then couldn’t breathe. At all. Zero pull or push in my lungs and in my throat, it felt like my lungs had just completely stopped working. I panicked and ran out into the corridor with arms flailing and fingers down my throat in case I was choking on my vomit. Suddenly I managed to pull a little bit of air in through my nose and then I was able to pull more and more in until I felt like I was back in control. Thankfully none of my colleagues saw me flailing around and I just gathered myself in the toilet. I ended up going to the hospital that evening and sat there waiting for 5 hours until the exact same thing happened again (minus the vomiting) and then a doctor called me in. I was sent for a chest X-ray which apparently showed inflammation and mucus in my lungs but nothing serious and I was told not to worry.

This has now happened to me again 6 times over the last 7 days. It’s terrifying. I have a coughing fit, and then gasp loudly for air sounding like a donkey for about 45-60 seconds until I get a sliver of air in through my lungs. I’m going to go back to my GP today and explain it to him and see will he more helpful than the previous two occasions. Anyone ever experience something like this?

TL;DR - I have been experiencing coughing fits which lead me to gasp loudly for air for up to a minute. During this minute I can get zero air in or out and it feels like my lungs just stop working. Sometimes I also vomit or dry heave. Advice appreciated.

Window upgrade question

I am in the process to upgrade doors and windows in my home.

does it make sense to just get glass panes changed(24 yr old upvc windows) or go full upgrade to triple(44mm or 36mm). Windows will be south facing. Current windows struggle to hold heat on a cloudy day.

Also has anyone heard of salamander greenEvolution 76 Premium glass and are they good ?

Also whats difference between laminated vs normal glasses. which are better to hold heat or they r just safety feature ?

Thanks in advance.

is studying film in ireland worth it?

i'm currently studying at a drama school in london on a playwriting course, but i've become quite disillusioned with the work i'm doing. i love theatre, but the past few months have solidified that i want to work in film.

i know that london has more of a presence in the film industry, but ireland would be remarkably affordable (the past couple of months have killed my savings) and i'm aware that the industry is expanding in ireland. i’m not fixed on any specific county, but dublin does seem like the best bet, just for student life & such.

i've seen a few people talk about a creative uni (lADT), but it seems to have very mixed reviews? so i'm uncertain, but maybe people are just being cynical. is IADT good, and what other unis are there that would suit my ambitions?

any advice would be majorly appreciated x

How to deal with my GFs kid, is this the end of us?

Myself and my girlfriend (30s) have been with each other for nearly 2 years now, but her kid (10yo) is extremely difficult to deal with. Myself and my girlfriend are great together,we hardly ever argue and honestly thing's between just me and her are great, but her kid is putting a real wedge between us!

They are constantly in trouble at school for violent acts, but is never actually reprimanded for it, the school will call his mother to collect him,she can not collect because of work, and the same cycle continues with minimal consequences.

They have completely taken over the house, and will kick a ball in the sitting room for hours with no consequence, they have broke windows, blinds and lights but to no actual consequence.

It can be even worse to try and take control of the TV in the sitting room, to sit down and watch a "family" film together. Whenever we go somewhere (that we planned around, and for them) it's a non stop battle of wanting sweets, toys(that they don't even want) or whatever they want, and if they don't get it, they just constantly complain and actively pursue to make the day as worse as possible.

They have gotten away with way too much authority, but I feel I cannot just constantly battle for that authority figure (*we don't live together).

But they are a troubled person, I think the school should send them for assessment, but they have been no help at all in dealing with behavior issues.

At *home, it's a constant battle, their bedtime is 10pm, but they need to shower and everything else before that.. so 9-30 comes, his mother tells him its time and cuts screen time etc (which is a whole other argument and thread)... a whole argument persists about screen time,it's another 10 minutes or so before they actually go upstairs to shower, it's over 15-20 mins to shower!?!? Then they want to be put to bed and everything else in between that,it's well past 10pm (and they know what they are doing) until they are actually in bed.

They constantly go out of there way to oppose me or their mother and they are extremely bad with "laws" or dealing with any kind of emotions or authority,!!

For example, they were asking questions about a law, and then they said how they are not afraid to go to prison with rapists and murders because they would have done less, so those people would not hurt them in prison!!! And once they had their TV ( because everyone has a TV in prison supposedly) or their phone they would not care about being in prison!!! We were at a football game, and he was throwing up middle fingers, and insulting the other players on how fat they were, and how the whole world was against them!. He was saying this and cursing to other parents, which to me was a bit shameful.

I can only imagine now how things will be in the future, when they hit there teenage years, I feel it will be an absolute $h*it show.

I of course, want my own kids eventually, but my girlfriend is absolutely opposed to having more kids at this moment after dealing with so much..and if I am being honest, her kid has kind of turned me away from wanting kids or a future with her.

I was adopted from a crazy situation, so I know how hard things can be. But this to me,seems a step above to what I'm willing to deal with 🤷

My girlfriend is amazing, but I feel she panders too much to her only child, and there is only so many arguments you can have when you are not that child's direct parent

Gadget Insurance Ireland - can they just cancel my policy after 5 years for no reason?

Long shot here and probably very niche but just hoping someone might know what I can do.. any insights welcome.

I used to be a serial phone-loser so I've always had phone insurance. I've had three policys with two companies and I've always gotten replacements/repairs (quite a few) and it was worth it at the time to pay the monthly cost.

I've had this current policy with Gadget Insurance for 5 years now (28/11/19-present) and haven't claimed once. Friday night I was abroad at a gig (29/11/24) my bag was robbed and phone/purse was stolen. I just got home and I am trying to sort it out and obviously plan to claim for the phone, even though its 5 years old and worth nothing really (Samsung S10) but I've paid the insurance all this time so makes sense just to claim. And I really love the phone.

To my surpise, and very much ironic bad luck, I opened an email this morning to say:

Further to our previous correspondence we write to confirm your monthly gadget insurance will expire after today and there will be no cover for your gadget(s).

If you or any of your family members have a gadget which is less than 12 months old, we would be delighted to offer you an On-line 10% Loyalty Discount. To avail of this offer simply go online to www.gadgetinsurance.com and enter promotional code GP457040. Discount applies to Annual Gadget Insurance policies only.

Should you have any queries about this, please contact us on (01) 4854 115 or info@gadgetinsurance.com and our Customer Service Team will be happy to help.

I received no correspondence at all in this regard, and can't find anything regarding time limits on policies in my contact or any of their policies. And I am really annoyed that they give me one day's notice that my policy is being cancelled, and no reason as to why!

Luckily I seen this email in time, and submitted the claim today. But I know they will give me hassle as I am not their customer anymore in their eyes. And is it right that they can just decide to get rid of me now, after 5 years of being a good paying customer?!

I wont be able to get the phone insured anywhere else now as its too old. They only accept devices that are less than 12 months old. But why should I feed into the bullshit of a new phone every year? The phone works perfectly and I look after it (or I did before it was stolen) I just think its really unfair but not really sure how to argue it, or if I have any argument at all.

How Can We Stop Puppy Farming in Ireland ??

Hey, dog lovers! 🐶

Ireland’s reputation as the puppy farming capital of Europe has been on my mind lately, and I wanted to start a conversation about it. It’s heartbreaking to think about dogs being treated as profit machines—mothers forced into endless cycles of breeding, living in cramped, filthy conditions. 😔

Even though we have laws to protect dogs, enforcement seems weak, and unethical breeders find ways to exploit social media to sell puppies. Have you noticed the glossy Instagram and TikTok accounts hiding what’s really going on behind the scenes?

What’s Going Wrong?

  • Did you know Ireland’s illegal puppy farming industry is worth an estimated €120 million annually?
  • Many dogs are sold without proper traceability or health checks—making it easy for puppy farmers to thrive.
  • Social media has become a huge marketplace for these unethical practices.

What Can We Do?

I’ve been diving into this issue for a while now—talking to people in dog breeding clubs and Irish Kennel Club members. Some ideas that came up:

  1. Pushing for stricter enforcement of dog sale regulations.
  2. Raising awareness among buyers to avoid supporting unethical breeders.
  3. Encouraging transparency—like requiring microchip numbers and breeder information in every dog ad.

Your Thoughts?

  • Have you or someone you know ever bought a dog and later discovered it came from a puppy farm? What was that experience like?
  • What do you think could actually make a difference? Better laws? More education for buyers?
  • How can we spot red flags when looking for a dog?

I’d love to hear your ideas and experiences. Let’s brainstorm ways to make Ireland a leader in ethical dog breeding and ownership.

How does holidays/recess work in your job?

Hi folks. I started working for this company 3 months ago and they're gonna be in recess during the second half of December (roughly speaking). I work there as a kitchen porter, with the chef by my side. Both of us don't have to work until the first week of January. It may sound stupid, but it doesn't hurt to ask: are we going to get paid for these two weeks not working?

And since I'm making this post, is there anything I should know beforehand starting at a job or that I should be aware of? Thank you guys in advance =)

Can anyone recommend a bereavement councillor that does online sessions?

Anyone recommend a good bereavement councillor? My partners mother died back during the summer and given this will be the first Christmas since she passed, I'm thinking talking to someone might help them through it.

Looking for recommendations of someone that might do online sessions as travel isn't really an option as we have young kids with disabilities.

How are social classes differentiated in Ireland?

I’ve heard something about “social classes” before. They say the social use consumerism to classify the people: If they saw your postcode, shopping bag and children’s school, they know your social status, for example: the upper class will live in D4, buying things in M&S, send their children to private school.

Is this true in Ireland? Do rich people go shopping at Lidl/Aldi, drinking at a pub and send children to public school like normal person? I want to ask this because someone told me the upper class will never intersect with lower class in Europe, and different lifestyle, education and consumption habits is the main way to distinguish, ensure rich people will always rich.

Teaching In The Middle East - worth it?

Teaching In The Middle East

Teaching In The Middle East

Hi, I'd appreciate some decent advice on this. I'm approaching the end of my teaching career (post primary) but am planning on leaving early - finding it tough for reasons I won't bore you with. I was thinking of doing 3 years in the middle East as my last three years. I'm just wondering if that happens for people at the latter end of their careers? I know it's far more common among the younger teachers to go abroad. If I did three years there, would anyone have an idea of how much I could honestly expect to earn? I've seen multiple different figures quoted. Some give me great hope and others think I'd be better off finding a delivery job here! I'd appreciate any honest advice at all.

Thank you all.

Edit - I'm male and don't care about where in the middle East I go. Just want money for the nest egg. Mercenary I know!

Any insight is much appreciated, thanks!

Severe buyers remores after buying house, any tips?

Hello, I recently bought a house solo and I''m feeling a lot of anxiety and overthinking a lot of things now that it's a reality. I'm also extremely greatful to have gotten a house in the current climate..I bought a really nice house in a small estate, not sure what to make of the area yet, i keep thinking it could be a undesirable area.

I left a house with cheap rent in a good area and moved somewhere where I will now have to commute to work also, anyone got any tips to not feel so much anxiety?

Could I sell in a few months if I don't like it here? I'm on a variable rate, would there be any issues with that? Again maybe I'm overthinking things but just looking for advice.

Cheers everyone
