a sub for artists, art fans, critics, and wanna be critics who want to talk about art. discussions of artists, shows, books about art, and theory are all welcome.

this sub takes a cue from other depth subs - try to use more then one sentence when responding to posts and comments; don't post your own work, your friend's work, or your SO's work; try to keep discussion to established artists and prominent shows, not some painter who's website you thought was neat. assume that everyone here is reasonably intelligent and instead of flying off the handle at a comment ask for clarification. and please, don't downvote someone you disagree with, save it for comments that are off topic...

Inclusion and Representation (AKA "Shucking and Jiving at the Whitney")

I just saw this article today where (asian guy) Ryan Wong claims to have created (white guy) Joe Scanlan who created (black woman) Donelle Wooford and got "her" into the 2014 Whitney Biennial. I'm sure you are saying "what the fuck is going on here?" Well, Wong is being satirical, but sadly Scanlan is real and really did create Wooford and really did get his creation into a biennial shockingly lacking in diversity.

I'd love to hear what people make of this whole thing.

Why yet another art sub?

It seems like no matter how hard the other art subs try, they can never seem to really get in depth discussions going. A thread here or there will be insightful, but the basic tone of those subs always veers away from art as an academic pursuit; the intellectual side of art is ignored and/or resisted.

The hope is that here we can gather those interested in discussion in one place, where you come when you are in the mood to flex your brain instead of look at cat pictures (not that there's anything wrong with that). This sub is about art's place in the world, and not about getting your own work validated.
