Where do young kids/teens hang out in Arroyo Grande?

We are considering a move to the area, and I’m curious what young people who live in Arroyo Grande like to do and where they typically hang out. Is it in the local village, shopping centers, or they hang out further away like in SLO?

I’m asking because when I was a middle schooler + high schooler, I was a 15 min drive away from my high school’s town (in San Diego), and I always felt like an outcast because of this. It was a beautiful little suburban residential area that we lived in, but so isolated from all the fun and activities. Plus it was a pain for my parents to have to drive me any time I wanted to do something with friends, go to sports practices, or do anything at all.

As we are looking at housing, I would love to prioritize areas that will be super accessible for my kids as they grow up, where they can easily meet up with friends from the local high school, AGHS, simply by walking or biking. The less driving us parents have to do, the better. Thank you!

Veteran Angel Tree has Officially started!

Our Veteran Angel Tree Program is Officially Underway!

This holiday season, we are supporting over 385 veterans here on the Central Coast who are in need. We invite you to stop by one of our participating locations to pick up a tag and make a difference in their lives.

Welcome Home Military Heroes Honors 100-Year-Old WWII Veteran in Arroyo Grande! 🇺🇸🎉

Today, Welcome Home Military Heroes (WHMH), a local nonprofit based in Arroyo Grande, celebrated a truly special milestone for WWII Veteran CPL York, who just turned 100 years old!

The event was a memorable Veteran Vehicle Salute held at the Agrarian Hotel, where community members came together to show their appreciation. WHMH volunteers even sang “Happy Birthday” to CPL York, honoring his service and incredible century of life.

It was a heartfelt gathering to celebrate one of our nation’s heroes and a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation.

Let’s wish CPL York a very happy 100th birthday and give a shout-out to WHMH for keeping the veteran spirit alive in our community! 🎂🎖️

Find a D&D group near AG

My name is Chay Comas, and I catalog local tabletop gaming clubs for D&D, Miniature Wargaming, and Trading Card Games across the Central Coast of California in this free forever newsletter.

If you're looking for a tabletop club, or how to create one from the ground up, this issue is for you. This issue covers some big news about a couple of local game designers, how to find or organize a tabletop club, features local artists, a local gamer keeping a 200+ year gaming tradition alive, a guide for organizing game clubs, and a special dedication to my father at the end.

Excerpt:

...Marshall Neal has been supporting local game conventions by running Kriegsspiel, a very historical wargame dating back to the 1800s as an officer training tool for the Prussian Army. Kriegsspiel is often referred to as the Great Grandfather of Dungeons & Dragons, as it led to more recent, and familiar, historical wargames like Napoleonic Wargames. The Napoleonic Wargames and other wargames of the 1960s and 1970s brought together the co-creators of Chainmail (Gary Gygax and Jeff Perren), which then inspired Dungeons & Dragons (Dave Arneson and Gary Gygax). Marshall has single-handedly kept the flame of Kriegsspiel alight on the Central Coast, as few still play locally. Though his international community on Discord thrives and often plays virtually, I wonder when the last in-person game will be played here on the coast...

Enjoy, and Happy Gaming! Central Coast Game Community Newsletter

it appears this thread on ND tells me people are a little to comfortable shit posting about the LGBT community. All my life the het community has forced me to see their sexuality, and now the queer community is becoming a bit more comfy being open and people are losing their minds.

Shops on Grande Ave/Branch Street

Hi I am new to living in the village and have a serious question. The village is adorable, and the merchants and/or city take great care placing string lights all up and down the street which is so great to see. My question is, why do all the businesses close at 5? Is this an ordinance thing, or the choice of the merchant? Imagine how busy the streets would be during the holidays if things were open for shopping. As it is, we have a ghost town during the evenings when the village is at it's prettiest. Thanks!

Non-stop crying and barking Pup left outside everyday in Arroyo Grande

I can take a photo tomorrow, but I have been staying in Arroyo Grande since June and I’ve noticed that this poor adorable small dog is constantly barking and crying all day and night long behind a backyard fence. I walked my own dog at 2pm today, then did another walk around 6pm and then we did our last walk at 9:30pm. That poor baby was outside the entire day & now night & my husband confirmed it was out at 6am this morning. I have seen someone coming and going sporadically, yet the lights are always off in the little house & that poor little pup is always outside barking and crying. It’s been really hard to live near it as no Dog (especially a small one) should be abandoned for so long. Is there a protocol to follow for this situation?

The little pup is by the 101 (it’s loud), on Fair Oaks Avenue in Arroyo Grande.

Thank you, Concerned Dog lover.

What are the best schools for neurodivergent kids?

My 9 year old son (going into 4th grade) was recently diagnosed with ADHD. We are considering moving to the CA central coast area.

I would love to know opinions and personal experiences on schools, and school districts with the best resources and approach for neurodivergent students, as this is a big factor in determining where we live. We just started the IEP process at his current school and hopefully will have that approved by the time we move.

We have 2 elementary-age kids and from what I’ve researched, Arroyo Grande area seems like it might be a good fit for us, and for them to grow up all the way through highschool. Will be visiting the area in the coming months to get a feel for it. Open to any thoughts or alternate considerations. Thank you!

Live Alternative Music and Art Show - ALL AGES!

Anomaly House is proud to present the Alt-Space concert series, featuring some of the most creative and unique acts in independent Alternative Music.

Join us at Humdinger Brewing in Arroyo Grande on Saturday, March 30th for a live show featuring...

THE ONLY OCEAN: Alternative Rock from Los Angeles, CA. Known for their unique blend of indie rock and post-punk influences, The Only Ocean's sound is characterized by dreamy guitar riffs, driving rhythms, and heartfelt lyrics that explore the complexities of relationships, body image, and self-discovery. Since their formation, the band has released several critically acclaimed albums and EPs, and has toured extensively throughout the California coast, building a dedicated fan base with their high-energy live performances and emotionally charged songwriting.

ZAMPKAMP: "Pretty Boy" Industrial from Santa Barbara, CA. Zampkamp is an independent music project from multi-instrumentalist and producer Zackary Cramp. His sound features massive bass guitar, synthesizer, and lo-fi drum machine sounds; and lyrics dripping with cynicism that point out the absurdity of the modern world, while celebrating the pleasures that romance, movement, and sin bring to our humanity. Though a solo project in the studio, Zampkamp performs live as a three-piece band.

MECHANICAL GHOST: Electro-Industrial/EBM from Arroyo Grande, CA. Mechanical Ghost utilizes machine-like beats, crashing metallic sounds, walls of distorted synth, and manic, mangled vocals to construct a vibe akin to a futuristic meat grinder. This is a sound inspired by the industrial music of the 1990s, brought to the modern era with a cyberpunk edge. This music is equally dark and danceable, with lyrics that explore the internal struggle of bringing light to the darkness; whether that darkness is personal or societal.

This event will also feature a pop-up record store and art show, featuring Phantom Stranger Records, A Pirate's Life Art Collective, and Rhivolver_art. Records and art will be available for purchase!

Tickets are available here.

Local Piano Lessons for Kids

Hello… I am hoping to sign my 9 and 11 year old daughters up for beginning piano lessons. I was wondering if anyone had a good lead on a possible instructor. I have seen a few local studios, but I was kind of hoping for something a little more personalized. If you know anyone who teaches out of their house, or would come to my house… students looking for extra income… I appreciate the help…
