In Spring, I hired a gardener to add plants to my backyard. I told them that Sunmertime is full sun (north/south) and winter has shade from our walls. I request plants that could survive this and that didnt leave a huge mess. They planted two types of Lavender, common myrtle, wax leaf privet, purple ruellia, and white ruellia.
Now that summer has passed, all of the wax leaf privet are dead. Most of the Lavender are dead. The ruellias and myrtles are hanging on for dear life.
As I would like to replace the dead items, I'm looking for suggestions on what can survive the heat/full sun during the summer and the shade during the winter. I only have one irrigation line so I need plants with similar watering schedules. The irrigation system is also tied into the water softener system.
I'm in south Phoenix area (east valley).
I appreciate any suggestions as I'll probably do the replacement myself.
Greeting all, We are getting a Ficus tree from Whitfill scheduled for next week planting. They had white flys on them and while they may treat them before they get here, I want to spray it with an insecticidal soap. Does anyone here have a recipe to make my own? I saw one that used a 2:5 mix of rubbing alcohol and water with dish soap added as a surfactant. Any other suggestions?
I had a load of mulch delivered and it smells strongly of ammonia. I tested it with a home kit and the test shows neutral PH. Is it good to use or do you think it will kill my plants and lawn?
This is my third poor rosemary plant that hasn’t taken. First I planted in-bed in a Mel’s mix, then tried planting in native soil and being more neglectful, now this one is in a container of raised bed mix from AZ worm farm. I watered it in, then used a moisture meter and only watered again once dry. This one is the first trailing variety I’ve tried. I see huge bushes of the stuff at my kids school and sometimes around landscapes, what am I doing wrong??
Kratom usually grows in the tropical regions. I was wondering if anyone knew if I could grow kratom. I usually take kratom powder and avoid any syntetic version like extract and beyong. However, I am not fond of buying these online, and finding local vendors is a pain, although if you have any recommendation on where I can find kratom shop, much welcome. But I still plan to go grow kratom at home and try pure natural version on the same. Your insights are much appreciated.
It’s October now and we have just made it through another harsh heatwave. I’m curious what ground cover everyone has and if it survived the summer this year.
I have some clover patches to replace a big thirsty yard. It survived up until late July and is now looking kind of sparse.
They were beautiful and healthy ranging from a 1/2 inch to one inch tall. Something took them all out. 😭They were in a raised bed. Looking for advice to keep it from happening when I try again. Thanks for the advice.
So I bought some hoses, those nice lightweight expandable ones, all of them started leaking sooner or later (rather sooner) so all were returned. I ended up buying a slightly fancier but a regular rubber one.
One issue in common I've encountered: 50 ft hose is only about 41 ft long! Is it normal? I'm returning it tomorrow but wtf, is it some sort of industrial standard or what? I'm actually really missing those 9 feet.
I think we have a melon plant!
Hi I am a new homeowner and acquired a yard with lots of pretty trees and land.
I know nothing about gardening and I’m wondering:
Where do you recommend me to start learning about my existing plants and how much to water them?
I’d love to take up gardening, are there any resources or services to help me figure out where to put a garden bed and what I can plant and when?
Is this orange tree done for? I think this extra hot summer was too much for it. It was green a month ago and branch by branch gone brown. The branch to the left was fully green about two weeks ago.
I am planning to add a citrus tree to our front yard. We are trying to increase the edibility of our yard, so I'm thinking some sort of orange tree. Our neighbor has a row on ornamental orange trees. I've seen them called wild orange or sour orange, but the gist is their fruit is not edible.
If I plant an orange tree, is there any risk of cross-pollination leading to my tree also becoming inedible?
Also, if you have any recommendations for a variety, let me know! I normally go to Whitfill, but if there's someplace better I'm happy to know about it.
Thanks
Video says it all I think. Planted other ones in other beds. THRIVING. Been very busy. Checked on this guy today and realized it might be a lost cause. Thanks! Tempe area.
Any idea what might be going on with this cactus? It's not being over watered.
I seem to be losing a battle with some type of caterpillar, seems to fit th description of tent caterpillars. Eating my borgonvillas, Tacomas, sage (the native kind with pink flowers). Any advice from more experienced AZ gardeners?
Hello, I bought a house recently and i don’t know how to maintain the existing trees.
Does anyone have any advice on how to learn ?
I’d like to learn how to take care of existing yard as well as how to garden in a south facing backyard.
Where can I get started?
Sincerely, Woman with no green thumb
I have 4 Italian Cypress and lost the one on the right. The one next to it looks like it’s getting the same browning. The other two are ok for now but some browning may be inevitable in Phoenix I suppose. These are about four years old and were getting watered every 4 days during the Summer.
