Haven’t grown any for a couple decades. I am setting up a 220 gallon tank with some Oscars and such that have gotten big. I want to grow some herb too. Please advise!
So I'm very well aware of aquaponics. However my question is this:
Does anyone here grow in JUST SOIL without the aquaponics/hydroponic setup? But still uses fish water to water thier plants? Lacking nutes and can't get any soon and my plant is close to the veg stage. I'm already starting to notice light green leaves as well as a few brown spots.
If your answer is yes then can you explain to me what else you do besides just use that water? Anything else you add? Any help is great. Trying to go as organic as possible for my first grow.
Hey guys, new sub here. I wanted to try growing some autoflower buds in my 55 gallon tank but realized that leaving on the lights for all my fish 24/7 probably wouldnt be the best idea. I realized I could always get a separate tank and move the water back and forth or i could always just feed the plants the tank water. The thing is though that i want to keep it as low maintenance and as discreet as possible. This got me thinking and looking around for solutions and led me to discover what a water bridge is.
I really liked the guys setup on here where he made an enclosure on top of the tank, but i also have a turtle who needs a basking space and light above the water line lol.
Would it be feasible to set up a second 5/10/20 gallon tank designed for my grow (lights on 24/7) without disturbing my aquarium ecosystem in the first tank with a water bridge? My main concern is i dont know if the water between tanks will flow well enough back and forth for the plants to receive enough nutrient water, but cant think of a reason why this wouldnt work. I’d appreciate your help!
So I have a Common goldfish at 6", and a Comet goldfish at 8-9" in a 55 gallon aquarium. I have pounds and pounds of excess lava rock as parts of various filters already running for my pets, both a 35 gallon pump, as well as two massive DIY sponge/biomedia filters running off of airpumps in the tank.
So as a Virginian, I am allowed to have UP TO 4 plants in my house as a legal adult with nobody under 21 ever even dropping by, really. And you are allowed to grow up to one full ounce in harvest.
If I ran a line from my sump up to an overhead sump/microgrowbed, and dumped my excess biomedia in there as grow media, and nixed the extra in-tank filters, would my fish conceivably produce enough waste to grow 4 healthy plants (with the understanding that one might croak)?
If that's not enough, would simply feeding them more be my only option? Or is there an aquarium safe fertilizer that's not gonna give me Space AIDS if I smoke it?
I'm not looking to get into more fish or a larger aquarium at the moment, but am saving away with future upgrades in mind. I'm focused most on the plants helping my pets than I am trying to get into growing plants. If wee weren't on the table as an option, I would just buy a larger sump or a massive amount of fast-growing plants.
Any and all advice, stories, and/or links would be greatly appreciated, my dudes!
Hey there people! No, it's not cannabis, but it is aquaponics! Coming to you because here I know I can find top-quality info and advice. Growing hot peppers
I really need some help putting the aphid situation back in control. The ladybugs are recovering and gaining ground but it looks like it's still not enough. Plus, the leaves have this nasty juice sap from the aphids and those white things. I want to clean the plants without destroying the ladybugs. Therefore:
Ahm, so I am curious to know what are the possible downsides of having the water wicking up throught the dual root zone.
Besides consuming water from the aquaponics system, what other disadvantages can be?

Does anyone have any experience trying to plant something vegged in a aquaponic system then transplanted (at a young age) into a living soil bed?
Hey guys,
Been a lurker on here for a while, just trying to learn as much as I can at the moment. However I have come up with a few questions that I dont seem to be able to find answers to. Maybe I'm not looking up the proper words but I've been looking for a few weeks and I think all you fellas might be the only ones able to help.
So a little background for context; I've always wanted a fish tank since I was a kid and after proactively looking for the last few years I finally nutted up and purchased a high quality 120g aquarium. Another thing about me is I'm a huge hippie and I've built a grow room right next to where my fish tank will be going. Of course a big part of owning and maintaining an aquarium is filtration, and if I'm gonna have to filter water anyway I might as well run some fuckin aquaponics!
Sorry for the life story there but the TLDR version of my post here is this;
If I have a planted aquarium and I decide to add liquid c02 and fertilizers and such for the tank plants, how badly is that gonna fuck with the plants in the grow bed?
Same question in regards to the chemicals and other common cleaners for aquariums. Which ones should I avoid? Should I use them at all?
Hopefully that all makes sense there, like I said I've been doing lots of reading and research, especially lately(been stuck at home after a ruptured achilles for over a month) and there seems to be very little info in regards to those two things.
If so, then what kind of fresh water fish would you recommend and how many in the tank that would provide plenty of nutrients for the plant that would get thicc resinous buds?

This is my 40 gallon chop and flip setup, and my first time growing aquaponic weed. I Was looking for any pointers from the pros. I've just been supplementing currently with seaweed powder in the top layer of the dual root system and thats about it. Its currently on a 12 hour light cycle with a little 100 gph pump on the lowest power so it gets plenty of time to air out the roots. It floods and drains aproximently every 15 to 20 minutes or so with still feels too fast but my plants all seem to be flourishing.
