Apple IIGS ROM 1 to ROM 3 motherboard swap?

Hello! Will swapping a ROM 3 motherboard into a ROM 1 unit work? If so, will that effectively make it a ROM 3 or are there other differences? Thanks for any advice!

UPDATE - Help Troubleshooting/Restoring an Apple IIc

Previous post linked at the end.

I've made progress! I replaced the MRD6 RAM chip, as suggested by u/buffering in the last post. A 4164 Samsung chip from Jameco did the trick.

This fix eliminated the error manifesting as backslashes appearing on the screen at startup. I'm also able to load some software glitch-free. For example, Mouse Paint has no issues.

However, some software loads with glitches, like Apple Works (word processor is shown in the photo). Other software is still unable to load at all. When this happens dollars signs ($) and other symbols, I think quotation marks ("), appear on the screen.

My guess is that the main bank of RAM is good, but there's a bad chip in the auxiliary RAM. If the software is limited to the main RAM, no issues. If it needs the auxiliary RAM, it runs with errors or not at all.

I've ordered a ROM 4X chip to help diagnose, but I'm also hoping someone has insight into the potential issue based on the symbols shown on the screen like last time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subtracto

I am trying to remember this educational game around in the late 80’s. I don’t remember if Subtracto was a character or the name of a game. But it involved moving between rooms and solving puzzles. Anyone remember this?

What were your reasons for choosing Apple II over Commodore 64?

Clearly, the C64 was a lot cheaper and had better sound and graphics. What was the reason you or your parents chose Apple IIe over Commodore 64?

For me, the reason is simply that the school also uses Apple IIe. In addition, it has 80 column display. Moreover, the Commodore 64 has a much harder keytouch and slow/unreliable floppy drive.

What was your favorite Apple II game?

I remember after finishing homework, my parents will allow me to play Apple II games. My favorite was "Alien Typhoon". What was your favorite?

ZOOM INVITE: Meet Brian Dougherty - Founder of Berkeley Softworks - GEOS for the Apple II series - Thursday, April 18, 2024 !

Hey Apple II fans!

Reconnect with one of the most intriguing entrepreneurs of the mid-1980’s home computing era. Brian Dougherty was the founder of Berkeley Softworks, the company that developed GEOS (Graphic Environment Operating System) for the Apple II series of computers.

GEOS competed with other graphical user interfaces (GUI) such as Apple II DeskTop and Catalyst, all of which aimed to bring some of the functionality to the Apple II series that was previously only seen on more powerful computers like the Macintosh.

Brian Dougherty will be interviewed by Toronto-based UI Designer Lucas Gramajo.

Please mark your calendars:

Date: Thursday, April 18, 2024.

Time: 7:30PM ET. (Toronto, Canada).

Zoom details: https://www.tpug.ca

Enjoy the show !

Need help remembering an Apple // game.

I know this is probably a stretch but I’m trying to remember a game I used to play in middle school. I thought that the title was called Traveler. Similar to the rpg game of the same name. You played as a space traveler going to planets and searching for items, essentially a space based version of D&D.

I have searched for it over the years and have never come up with anything. Maybe I’m misremembering?

What Drive?

I'm resurrecting my enjoyment of Apple IIe with a machine I just received from eBay. In the past the only drive option (other than dealing with real drive and media) was the ReactiveMocto CFFA.

I'm please to see that they still produce it but also became aware of the Microdrive/Turbo and the Floppy Emu devices.

I'm probably going top run ProDos so as to support a virtual hard drive, but am at loss as to which device to use.

Feedback would be appreciated.

Are Booti's still produced?

Just picked up an Apple IIgs without drives, would love a cheap internal card like a Booti to store a hard drive image. They seem to have gone unavailable since I last searched, are there any similar affordable projects for an internal card providing hard drive emulation?

Disk II drive not reading disks anymore

I've tried multiple disks, flipping it different directions, and even opening up the drive to clean the drive head. Still nothing. I reset and I hear the clicks and hear the disk spinning, but it just spins forever. Ive had this computer for years and it worked fine, but there was a power outtage which may have caused the issue but im not 100% certain about that since the computer is on a good surge protector. The loss of power which prompted a reboot may have just shined a light on some other issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do all ADB keyboards work with the Apple IIGS?

I had googled the questioned and determined that if your Apple IIGS had ROM 3 that it was pretty much compatible with all ADB keyboards I just wanted some confirmation that was the case.

Started with Commodore. Now I’m doing Apple ][

Started my retro computing journey with Commodore. Yesterday, I was lucky enough to find this at a reasonable price so I picked it up. Long live the MOS-6502 (65c02) and the 8-bit era of personal computers.

DLL errors when trying to start epple2? (Win 11 64)

This turned into a computer archeology thread. Honestly maybe you could even call it lost media, no-one else is ripping this program.

List

VCRUNTIME140_1D.dll

MSVCP140D.dll

VCRUNTIME140D.dll

ucrtbased.dll

Not found

Basically I have a rare piece of software captured from vinyl in 192khz 16-bit and so on, and epple2 supposedly is the seemingly only one to support tape WAV files so I'm trying to get it to open. Alternatives are also welcome.

Tips for mounting a MeanWell RQ-50B inside the case?

My "original" (the whole computer is a Taiwanese compatible) PSU blew up a capacitor, and I've been unable to fix it. Instead, I spent $30 on a MeanWell RQ-50B, which outputs ±5V and ±12V.

It seems like a cute solution, but it has one snag: the PSU is just wide enough to fit inside the original PSU's computer case.

I'm sure I can figure out a solution by sawing the original case (I need its AC socket and power switch) and mounting the meanwell to it. Considering how cheap this solution is, however, I was wondering whether anyone had a ready-made solution for doing this.
