Documenting antisemitism in (and on) Reddit

Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.

— Guidelines for documenting antisemitism on reddit: —

*1. Source your submission, but *never link directly to comments/threads, esp. so as to never tag the antisemites. That extends to your regular comments.

Submit screenshots, be sure to retain the content's context. BLUR or CENSOR USERNAMES

2. Post titles must include subreddit names: "[/r/…] title"

This helps shed light on and document the types of antisemitism, as well as if it's recurrent in a potential hotspot: "[/r/name] your title"

Do not go to those subreddits and harass individuals or moderators. This is both against sitewide rules and those of this sub.

Use descriptive, (as far as possible) non-inflammatory post titles with quotes were appropriate

Do not ping r/subreddit in comments.

3. NO antisemitism & the Definition of antisemitism

Do not be antisemitic.

We use the IHRA definition of Antisemitism.

A more expansive definition was created by the mods of multiple Jewish subreddits here.

We don't play etymology games

4. Only post about racism on reddit

As our name suggests, don't post off-site instances.

For instances of antisemitism on instagram you can document it on r/AntisemitismOnInsta

For instances of antisemitism on other social media you can document it on r/AntisemitismOnSocials

5. No use of antisemitism for political means

For instance, valid criticisms of Israel are not antisemitism.

6. Don't interact with the antisemitism

Don't post, (dis)like or comment on a linked post/comment.

Do not go to a thread and interact. If you are the poster, once you've posted here, STOP. If you have already been involved in the conversation on the thread in question, choose which one to stay involved with. Do not go back and forth.

7. No racism, bigotry, or trolling

No exceptions. Trolling is at mod discretion and includes attempts.

Bigotry includes any speech that diminishes the humanity of any person or group of people on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, nationality, origin, or disability. This is not an all-inclusive list. Mods may always use their own discretion.

Marked, moderate sarcasm/parody is ok, with removal at mod discretion.

8. No usernames of antisemites

Reiterating: All usernames MUST be redacted. Censor them in a way that is impossible to read. No highlighting so that you can read if you squint.

9. Do not post about bans, moderator actions in other subreddits, moderators in other subreddits, etc.

Always be mindful of admin hypersensibility both in posts and comments.

Otherwise you hurt both your own account and this sub.

This is especially true for posting about bans (incl. shadowbans & mod messages), as doing so "with the intent to incite a negative reaction" goes against reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. Doing so will also allow the banning mods to get the admins to strike you. Since we, admins, and the other mods cannot know what those intentions are. NO MENTIONS are allowed.

/r/Rockland year in review

The sub is obsessed with Jews and blaming the Hasidic population for everything, even when they aren't even involved. "Do something about (((them)))" was one of the top 3 posts of the year, in a year that was filled with antisemitism in a county that has more Jews per capita than anywhere in the US (and has been this way for longer than my 45 years on this planet).

I post about the antisemitism on that sub because I'm guessing a lot of people on this sub knows at least one Jewush person from here...no matter where you are.

We are in danger...Hasidic, Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, secular, or otherwise.

r/TrueAnon has a photo complete with no source to share, uncritically shared to r/lostgeneration as well

And yeah, people are buying it without hesitating (my apologies if incorrectly flagged)

r/Wikipedia on whether the Saudi Arabian textbook controversy is actually "controversial." (The concern in question was over Saudi textbooks citing Hadith that "The Hour will not come until Muslims will fight the Jews, and will kill all the Jews.")

/r/Rockland...Hasidic Jews control / ruin everything..

"We are Jewish...nothing to do with antisemitism...we are 'normal'..." because apparently Hasidic Jews aren't "normal people".

r/Wikipedia OP claims Jewish and Israel subreddits follow anti-Jewish conspiracy theory in response to Wikipedia's anti-Israel Bias

Post was about Bedouin village that was demolished where article claimed it was "ethnic cleansing" because it was replaced by an Orthodox village, despite Bedouins not inhabiting the area until the 1950s and being restored.
