A place to discuss the science and morality of the way we use animals
This is a place primarily to discuss science, ethics, and policy regarding animal welfare. Please feel free to post interesting articles or ask questions, this is a place for open discussion so do not tell someone they are wrong or disregard the thoughts of others, the community and mods are happy to help.
Please refrain from posting spam, NSFW, hateful or discriminatory posts or anything graphic.
A place to discuss animal welfare science, an emerging field that seeks to answer questions raised by the human use of animals.
While science-focused, animal welfare is a complex space and we welcome discussions that include ethics, policy, and economics.
Subreddit Rules
This subreddit should enable sharing and discussing of animal welfare research and news. Academic work and summaries are welcome.
This subreddit is a place to discuss animal welfare, not animal rights. Humans currently use animals for their own purposes. This is where we ask: how can we do it better?
No petitions, no memes
Questions about individual animal health and welfare issues will be deleted. The answer is always to take them to your vet or call your local authorities. Using the case of individual animals to kickstart a discussion on wider practices is OK.

Research title: The relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence.
My name is Jagoda Szymanska, and I am currently completing an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Psychology at the University of Essex. I am conducting a study that aims to explore the relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence. I aim to investigate the lived experiences of people who had pets in abusive relationships, the importance of animals for people who are going through hardships of abusive relationships, and better ways to support survivors and their animals when fleeing abusive relationships.
Why is my research important?
The impact of domestic violence on animals and the relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence is currently under-researched. Animals, as much as humans experience domestic violence and are often used as a tool for the abusers to coerce their partners. Leaving abusive relationships with animals can be more difficult, especially since there is limited support that is offered to survivors, and finding accommodation with pets is often close to impossible. This research can help to explore other or new means of support that could be offered to victims and will provide data for future research.
Will I be identified if I take part in this research?
No, participation in this research is voluntary and confidential. This research uses an anonymous survey, and your data will be coded. The survey will not ask for or store any personal, identifiable information.
Can I get a final copy of the study?
Yes, you will be entitled to obtain a copy of the study when it's finished. This can be done by contacting me via the email provided below or at the end of the survey.
What are the inclusion criteria?
Anybody who has living experience of being in an abusive relationship whilst also having a pet.
If you are interested in taking part in the research, please take part in the survey:

I don't know if this is the right subbreddit for this but do you know where I can get some unbiased sources of animal welfare topics like farming, animal testing, rodeos, zoos, etc, because everytime I look up if something is cruel to animals I receive sources from the industries themselves or the vegan movement and it causes confusion for me because both sides make good points. Also how do I know if both sides aren't saying stuff like this for money?
Examples:
Dairy Farmers: Dairy cows are bad moms who beat their young
Vegan movement: Dairy cows are good moms who love their babies
Another Example
Pig Farmers: Pigs don't care about being in getation stalls and if they were in group housing they would bite each other
Vegan movement: Pigs want more space and gestation stalls cause psychological problems
It really bothers me because I don't want to boycott something for no reason or support a bad industry by mistake. If anyone has any info let me know.
Hi all, I am a doctoral researcher from the University of Turku in Finland. I am starting an online investigation on the Human-horse relationship and the interlink between human personality, attachment theory and the horse environment.
We are looking for horse owners world wide to respond to our survey.

Thank you for your help.
We are currently looking for participants (anyone over 18 years old) to complete an online research survey as part of a research project at Oregon State University. This survey will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Participants will view images of cats in different settings and respond to questions related to the cat’s perceived status, the cat’s emotional state and their own emotional response to viewing each image. Participants will also be asked their opinions about the emotional capabilities of cats, as well as how they feel about cats having access to outdoor spaces.Anyone over the age of 18 years old is invited to participate. The survey link can be found here: https://beav.es/TZu/
Thank you!
Cats and dogs are among the most popular pets in the world, and these animals raise controversy between lovers and opponents. So what is the best between cats and dogs?https://www.aymany.com/2023/03/cats-vs-dogs-best-pet-for-your.html

Hi All, Mod Kopotojo here,
This subreddit has been quiet for some time with the occasional post and some that do not really belong here. I just wanted to check in with everyone in this community and see if there is anything we can do to boost this subreddit?
I am going to be posting regularly after having a long break from the science community (for personal reasons) and I hope my posts will be a good start to engage you all in some interesting conversations about animal welfare.
I want to reiterate that this subreddit is a place for scientific, political, and ethical discussions about animal welfare, everyone is allowed their own opinions but please do not attack each other based on personal beliefs. Science is at the forefront of this subreddit so evidence based arguments have strong weight here.
I also want to say that while we love animals are all shapes, sizes, fluffiness, and adorableness. This is not a subreddit for cute animal videos (unless they are for discussion), NSFW posts, spam, none-evidence based articles, or graphic content. Please mark posts appropriately with the correct tag if they might be of a sensitive nature.
I will be monitoring this subreddit closely to respond to posts and get some discussion going so I am likely to play devils advocate at times (definition: a person who expresses a contentious opinion in order to provoke debate or test the strength of the opposing arguments.) So please do not attack me or any others for expressing opposing views.
All that said after this longer than expected post, I hope to chat a bit more with you all and get some in depth discussion going :)
I am a graduate student studying the cognitive processes of non-human animals as well as our relationship with non-human animals. I am conducting a survey on the loss of non-traditional pets to better understand how non-traditional pet owners begin to process their grief. This survey defines loss as rehoming, confiscation, lost animal, as well as the passing of life.
This survey will take approximately 15 minutes. Your participation is voluntary, and there is no compensation for the completion of this survey. To take this survey you must be at least 18 years of age.
We recognize this survey may be upsetting but it would be greatly appreciated if anyone is willing to complete the survey to help us understand how people make difficult decisions and process their losses.

I'm a PhD student almost in my 3rd year (how did that that time pass so quickly?!)
My project looks at precision livestock farming technology, specifically barriers to their use (I only care about ones used to benefit animal health and welfare). Farmers are slow to adopt new technologies, and this was the main focus of my first study.
My current study focuses on consumer opinions of technology use on farms. While I'm doing this more scientifically in my actual study. I was wondering what opinions people hold in this group?
Do you like the idea of more technology use on farms? What, if any, knowledge do you have about these technologies?
I want a charity that doesn't advocate for the abolition of meat eating and farming, but rather seeks to improve standards and ensure humane slaughter.
I don't want to argue about the ethics of veganism, I just don't feel it's realistic. I'm shooting for harm reduction and I feel most average people are not interested in Veganism. Increasing humane slaughter will thus do far more good.
But when I google for this kind of charity, all I can find are abolition charities and other groups that seem to think the solution is to get people to stop eating meat.
I don't want to donate to such a charity.
I need help finding a good charity that advocates for humane slaughter. I'm fine paying much more for humanely slaughtered meat. I feel that's actually an achievable goal too.
Any suggestions?
