This fella has been hanging around our front door the last week. One of our dogs has taken to barking every time he sees him. While he (our pup) doesn’t have a strong prey drive, is there any concern if he were to bite him? We are new to Florida and have heard so much about cane toads, it’s got me worried about every critter! I’ve tried to shoo him away (our little jumpy friend, not our pup), but he keeps returning to the same location.
I have two spanish ribbed newts and they only use the bottom of their aquarium so I want to add some guppies. I've tried it before with the newt tank and my normal aquarium but they all died. Any tips?
Hello!
I’m making this post because I’m concerned about my wtf. She ate fake moss after she fell trying to grab a worm and I’m worried she’ll die from impaction.
I did remove the moss afterwards and now the tank is clean…
How do I take care of her now? is there any steps I can take to make sure she’ll be able to get it out?
How does a wtf get rid of moss? do they vomit or poop it?
I’m sorry, very frantic and scared right now…
TL;DR: want to house newts in a 20long with gold cloud (cold water) minnows. Wanting to know what newt species are best for this.
Long version:
Hi reddit, I understand this is sort of a dumb question as I'm an experienced amphibian keeper but I've never tried this type of setup before so I'm looking for advice regarding this.
I currently have 6 white cloud minnows + a lot of cherry shrimp + a lot of plants in a 5 gallon tank rn (java moss, anubias, subwassertang). The minnows got a bit bigger than expected and I would love to provide them with a bigger area to swim in, and I have an extra 20 long on hand.
The thing is I would love a multi species setup where the minnows can coexist with perhaps an aquatic or semi aquatic newt. I would love to give a 50/50 or 25/75 land/water setup a try.
I don't mind if a newt were to eat all the shrimp (I can leave some in the 5gal) but I don't want my minnows eaten. Luckily they are about 1.25" each so I don't think they would fit in the smaller newt species mouths.
Are there any newts that would be suitable for this habitat?
Or would it be contra indicated to have my fish and newts housed together for some reason.
The minnows can be at 55-75°f and prefer cooler water so I don't believe it will be an issue. I've had them for 1.5yrs without a single problem and they are healthy and eat good.
Just looking for recs and ideas, and if anyone knows of some newt species that would be happy in a setup like this :)
And honestly I love Eastern Newts, those are my top choice residents, but as they are native to my state I'm not sure where to buy them captive bred and if they would be ok with white clouds (it's a silly thing to wonder bc they live with minnows in the wild but....I digress)
Thanks so much!
I was doing some yard work, about to burn some undergrowth, and I stumbled into this Tubby little fella! This is a Marbled Salamander, the official salamander of the state of North Carolina! I very quickly relocated the little guy to somewhere safe, and let him go on his way!
Dug some of last years LTC group out for health checks now that activity has increased and a pair started to glue together immediately in a soaking dish!!!
Sadly they separated when placed back into habitat but I know some of the triggers to do seasonally now!!!
Fingers crossed! 🤞
Hello, im looking for suggestions for book about bombina species. Thanks
Hi! I just got a 12x12x24 vertical tank for my birthday, I'm making It a paludarium with a water sections 2-3 inches deep. will be covered in floaters too. I really want a frog/frogs to live in this tank but idk what ones will work. Ones that don't really require crickets bc I don't want to deal with crickets and buy them once a month. I do own flightless fruit flies to feed my geckos
hello!! im someone from around the white plains area and I was wondering if anyone had seen any newts in the westchester area? im looking for trails and stuff so I can observe and possibly photograph some newts. im hoping to find anything but eastern newts are my favorite. thank you so much! :)
Found this while working out in Dexter Missouri, buddy of mine was convinced it was a skink but I think it’s some kind of salamander. Hoping someone can tell me what it is& if it’s rare to find these little guys.
