i'm 17f, 18 in july. basically the title. Americorps is appealing to me for many reasons and while escaping my personal problems + home is not my sole motivator, it is pretty relevant. I was hoping that S/N possibly along with a part time job could support me while i get my foot out the door and act as a stepping stone to /keep/ me out.
The thing is, me and my parents are not on good terms and i do not expect their support or involvement in this.
is this possible at all?? How would I find housing without a co-signer.
Hello! Just reaching out because I was wondering what the timeline was for hiring/interview offers for y'all. I turned in my applications this Monday but have not really heard back so was a little worried, what was y'alls experience?
have people had good luck jumpstarting a career by doing americorps? will i be able to gain skills to get a job after my year of service?
Hi all, I have 2 job offers with 2 different Americorps programs. They both seem to have different positives for me. One is in a city I’ve lived in before and generally not liked at all, but the program is more geared toward my career goals. The other is in a city I would really love to be in, but the program is not what I want to do in the long run. I initially was rejected for the position I wanted in the city I wanted to be in (understandably, I think most people use it as their preference in that state). What would you consider here? They’re both short term positions, which is fine with me right now
Hello! Has anyone that’s participating in SERVEHouston taken their drug test yet?
Hello!
I applied for a TL position for NCCC Trad Corps starting in the Fall of 2024 around April 20th. On April 30th, I heard back that my application has moved past the initial screening and I'm now eligible to be interviewed. Now it's May 14th and I haven't heard anything back yet. Does anybody know what the timeline for these applications is? I've seen a couple of posts about people already being assigned to campuses for Fall 2024– are those for CM or TL positions? I have a deadline of May 31st to accept or defer a position in grad school but I really want to wait until I hear back from Americorps. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
I’m starting NCCC in the fall and have a wedding to go to in the spring, will it be difficult for me to get arrangements to fly home? I know it’ll be on my own dime but I’m just curious!
This may sound random, but I don't want to give any identifying information, so I will leave it general. Are there VISTA positions that require a long commute from the nearest town, potentially under very adverse weather conditions like heavy snow?
So in this scenario, it might not even be possible to accept unless you own a 4WD vehicle and can develop the driving skills needed, assuming you did not grow up with snow. Or, conversely, are there always other options? E.g., living closer or finding some other form of transportation.
I am interviewing for two positions: engagement volunteer coordinator and recruitment and outreach coordinator.
I am a retired 63 year old who wants to give back. Is 40 hours a week and a small stipend for nine months too great of a commitment for someone in my situation? Thank you for the feedback.
hi everyone! i recently accepted my invitation to join trad starting this summer. couldn't be more excited/nervous lol :)
is it possible to do freelance/under-the-table/gig/contract work while serving in nccc? does anyone have any experience with this that they can share?
Hi! I'm considering College Possible's program this fall as a College Access or Success Coach but want to hear some honest opinions. (I think it used to be called "College Forward")
What was your placement like? Did you feel supported? Would you recommend it? Hours/etc?
Also seeking opinion with Breakthrough as I'm considering working with them. If anyone worked with them in the past, please let me know what your experience was like. Thank you so much!
Hi guys I got assigned to the aurora campus and was wondering if anyone wants to start a group chat? You can dm your number if you want to be in it!
I know it is super selective who gets to be on the fire crews but does the southwest (aurora) region have them at all? I saw another post from a long time ago say they don’t?
Hello! I completed my AmeriCorps term about a year ago. I want to get a TEFL certification, but a lot of programs are just online academies. Has anyone used their education award to get a TEFL/TESOL or anything similar certificate? I was told by a former AmeriCorps member they used their award for pottery classes and one said it could be used to become a certified yoga teacher but I know it has to be a Title IV school so I'm trying to figure out how I can use it for my certification. Besides paying off loans what have you used your education award for?
I first applied to a VISTA site around February, a month later, I completed a preliminary screening call for the site and didn't hear anything back until a month later (April). I received an invitation to interview in early April, and it has been radio silent since I completed it. I contacted the people who interviewed me last week, but they haven't responded. I find it odd that my application status says it is "Waiting to be reviewed," considering they have seen my application enough to offer an interview. The "Accepting Applications" date has also been extended for another month, but I'm pretty sure it has been extended a few times by now. Is it safe to say that I didn't get the position so I can withdraw and move on? Has anyone else had a third-party screening call for a site before an interview? I don't know if this is a skill issue or if it is your typical, slow, bureaucratic process. I'm leaning towards I didn't get it even though, personally, that was the best interview I've ever done. Thank you.
i know there are a lot of different opportunities that i haven’t spent a ton of time exploring, but i was just wondering if there are any anyone knows of that can be completed fully remotely that will still allow you to earn the education award at the completion of it? thanks!
Hi everyone
I know nobody can tell me exactly what to choose, but I’m wondering what you’ve done or would do in my situation. I’ve been so dedicated to the idea of practicing law for almost 8 years now. But I’m so happy where I ended up in my AmeriCorps placement and I’m being offered a full time position at my site. I’m not sure if I’m going to want to go back to school. I’m thinking I want to stay here for a few years longer and build up the project I’m currently working on. I have never felt so at home somewhere like I do here. I was incredibly fortunate to not have any student loans from my undergraduate degree so I have no use for the segal award if I don’t go back to school. (I know you can use it for other education things though). But the idea of passing up almost 7k for $1,800 hurts my soul lol. What would you do? Save it to maybe never be used, or take the cash which will definitely be used?
Hey all! I accepted my invitation to ForestCorps and want to connect with other people who are planning on doing it. Reply to this if you're doing ForestCorps, along with what works best for you for a group chat (texting, discord, instagram, email chain LOL, anything else)
So I'm an Americorps service member and my term is three quarter time. My Americorps contract says I have to complete a minimum of 1200 hours over a period of 11 months, and my stipend is $17,600 for doing so. The organization I work for, however, made me sign a contract for them adding 277 hours to my service (working full time for the 11 months and ending with a total of 1477 hours) for the same exact stipend. I recently talked to former Americorps employees who told me they only had to complete 1200 hours last year, and they got the same 3/4 term stipend. Are they allowed to do this legally? Does Americorps let them just tag on an extra 277 hours unpaid to my requirements? What can I do? Can I just stop working at 1200 hours and still get my Americorps credit? My end date is supposed to be in August but I will have completed 1200 hours by June probably.
Hi- I applied as a FEMA Corps member and got accepted (yay!) but I was asked to interview for a TL position and received an offer! I was wondering if folks would be willing to share their experience:
Part of what attracted me to AmeriCorps was the idea of the team- I was hoping that I'd be super close with all my teammates since we're living and working together. If I am a TL, would I have to be a bit more distant from my team members? I am only 23, so probably about the same age as most of the team- could I make genuine friend connections with my team members, or would that be frowned upon? Is it isolating, to see your team be super close while you have to kind of stay on the outside?
Also, random, but would I get my own room in Vicksburg/on spike?
I’ve recently found out about an artist mentoring program that is through americorps. It’s about an hour away, but I’m willing to drive. I want to apply but I feel like I don’t exactly know what I’d be signing up for past the mentoring part. I have the information for the program coordinator, but I’m not really sure what all to ask about.
I have a 3 year old, and am looking for daycare/preschools nearby in order to have proper availability for the program. I know I want to ask for more information on assistance with that. I’m a single parent with no coparent. And I’m only looking for part-time, which is available. I’ve worked as an art teacher at an art center before, but I’m not familiar with Americorps.
Any suggestions or tips when considering applying? TIA
If I use the award to pay for a class and I fail that class, do I have to pay them back?
Hello, i am just seeking some advice for my upcoming service in the summer. i initially applied to multiple conservations corps programs and was waitlisted for all of them. later i got off the waitlist for Maine and i accepted thinking it would be my only opportunity to serve in corps this summer. well yesterday i got offered a position with the North Caroline Conservation Corps (which was higher on my list initially). the only issue is i have already started on boarding for Maine and was wondering if i should just stick with maine or if i am able to switch to north carolina. north carolina would work a lot better for me as i am a floridian and planning on driving, NC is a lot closer and they pay more. just seeking some advice on what to do, as NC was my top pick after southwest for corps this summer. am i even able to tell maine that i am no longer coming because i’ve chosen another program? will that make me look bad in the future if i want to serve again? thank you all for the help!
Hello I may be doing City Year for the first time and I don’t have lot of experience beside team building, is this a good experience for me to try or should I not try it? I’m a little nervous about this.
Hi! So I'm moving back to my home state in June as I'm currently leaving a job that has given me severe mental burnout due to having an extremely bad boss/still dealing with a breakup I had earlier this year/just miss being away from family and want to be permanently close to them again. I have a Bachelor's and don't want to get into the details but am leaving a fairly cushy job. I work in higher education administration and was looking into two different AmeriCorps VISTA positions mostly for the education award I would receive at the end since my student loans are only around $13k. I have prior NGO internship experience on my resume as well. I would be living at home with no rent with minimal monthly expenses. I am also looking at positions at universities in my area as well as other part-time restaurant work at a place I used to work at (and would be paid more there vs. AmeriCorps as well).
I'm seeing mixed reviews about AmeriCorps overall and not sure if most of them come from the POV of living solo/needing to pay rent while being paid extremely low. At the same time, I'm not looking at these positions as something that will exponentially beef up my resume but more so considering the payoff of doing it for a year and being able to knock out half my loans whilst being able to work in different fields I haven't worked before and perhaps gain a few new skills. However, I am aware I would be sacrificing not making a lot of money and also see that depending on the location, it might not even be a worthwhile experience. I would like to avoid a second round of burnout. I see many people on here saying they felt exploited, and honestly was pretty jarring for me to read. Mentally ATM that's not something I could handle. Is it still worth it for me to go through the interview process? Or would any past VISTA members who served advise against it?
Asking for a family member who has currently completed a few years of college. He is interested in a career in emergency management and would like to get some experience before graduating. He'd like to take off a year and do FEMA Corps during the 2025-6 school year and then return to college to graduate. Since he ultimately would like to work in emergency management does that plan make sense or would it be better to graduate college first and then do the program?
I left because of terrible coworkers and management. They seen me as the problem (very social justice oriented but as a non POC disabled person dealt with some subtle and overt bullying that nobody wanted to address). My manager was also very much a micromanager. How do I explain it in interviews?
I am participating in the Americorps Summer of Service for the North Central Region in Vinton, Iowa this summer and was wondering how to organize travel there. I understand that Americorps covers the expenses but do they arrange a flight, or do I need to? Or will I receive an email soon with information?
I completed a year of service with AmeriCorps during my studies. I will be graduating soon and would like to wear a stole or cord during my ceremony to display this accomplishment. Does anyone know where I can purchase these things?
-My program was small and does not have this available.
