Struggling to Decide: Is 20 Years Worth It?

I’m at a crossroads and could use some advice. I’ve been in for 18 years, and my enlistment is up next March. I have 11 years TAFMS. I gave up an AGR slot because I was burned out and tired of the Air Force. I originally joined to follow in my dad’s footsteps, but he committed suicide in 2017, and since then, I’ve felt like I’ve been doing this for nothing.

I failed a PT test in July because I didn’t even try—I was dead set on getting out, so it didn’t seem to matter. Now, I’m on the fence about whether I should stick it out for 20 years or leave. When my enlistment is up, I’ll have 18 years and 7 months in.

Here’s the thing: I hate PT, commander’s calls, and all the other useless stuff we do on the weekends. My mental health has been declining over the past few years, and I’m not sure if it’s worth sticking around just for the retirement.

I’m torn between leaving to prioritize my mental health and pushing through for the next year and a half to secure a pension. I’d appreciate any thoughts or perspectives on this.

Quarterly drill units for linguist?

My old cyber squadron offered quarterly drills as an option if you were fully qualified and lived out of state to keep you in the unit.

I’m wanting to cross train into Chinese linguist, and the unit here is understandably very strict about drill schedules with no missed or changed drills at all. Quarterly drills are a firm no go. Hawaii also doesn’t take any linguist if you don’t live in the island I learned.

Are there any intel (linguist) ANG units anywhere in the US that would even consider quarterly drills for a fully qualified member (NCO) living outside the state or even internationally? I’m guessing not and it’s a long shot but just want to be sure if all my options. I’m going to be calling recruiters later today but that’s always hit and miss so thought I’d ask here as well.

Thank you!!

1D Comm AFSC Tech School

I went to the Client Systems tech school and completed the program in 2019. There has been so many changes to the Com AFSCs within the last 5 years. It’s to my understanding that the Com Tech School at Kessler can’t even keep up with all of the changes. Currently the Enterprise or Q shred out and I’m in a W shred-out of the Com AFSC. Current unit is pushing hard for me to go to tech school. Is there a way to rush through the program?

Title 10 TDY conflict with title 32 FedTech position

I am scheduled to go on a TDY with my home unit this next month for about two weeks. I work in cyber on drill, but my Fedtech job is in security forces.

With our flight operations in security forces, we’re a 24/7 operation meaning there’s a minimum for manning.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t title 10 orders trump title 32 Fedtech since it’s technically a civilian employer due to USERRA?

UPDATE: TDY ended up being canceled. Disregard.

For those who’ve been around through multiple admins: does life change that much for us?

Business as usual or total cleaning of house and turmoil?

Any chance we'll get a confirmed DANG anytime soon?

Nomination was submitted back in March and we still don't have a confirmed DANG. How does this story end? Does the new administration get to submit someone new?

Employment

Would it be insane if I left my career status E7 AGR slot at a job I hate to go on MPA tour ? Not entirely sure how MPAs work or if I have return rights to my AGR slot after a certain period of time . Any perspective or opinion is appreciated.

Edit: thank you all for the helpful insights. I really appreciate the information/personal experiences shared.

Holding a different AFSC as title 32?

Hello everyone!

I couldn’t find a clear answer in the search, but was wondering if it was possible to change my AFSC so I could do something different during drill/TDY/deployments but stay at my unit as a GS employee in this status?

Award/Ribbon question.

BLUF: Would it be weird to order a ribbon before officially receiving the award?

I’m ordering new sets of ribbons for a buddies upcoming wedding in December and noticed I received an ASAM back in September from a previous deployment based off vPSC/vMPF but haven’t had drill since then to receive the actual award.

VA Disability

Just a PSA mainly because nobody really told me much about it before I retired, and also, I hadn't planned on applying, but my advice is to consider applying for VA Disability NET 6 months before your DOS/Retire date (VA Rule). Most bases at Family Support can inform you of your local Service Rep, I used a VFW Service Officer (VSO). You can also check with your local VFW to see if they have a VSO or know who your local VSO is. I know this is a touchy subject, it will attract the (VA haters), but they did right by me and many fellow retirees I know.

***New AROWS & HR System Links***

AROWS recently migrated to a cloud-based platform. This migration made the old link/website obsolete.

The old website/link will no longer work.

This is the new link:

Additionally, the following systems were moved to the new platform called “OKTA”

  • myFSS
  • LeaveWeb
  • vMPF
  • CMS (for FSS-only)
  • TMIS (Where system outages are reported)

Marine to Air National Guard – Question About ALS and Promotion Requirements

Hey everyone! So I just transitioned from active duty in the Marine Corps, where I got out as a Sergeant (E-5). Now that I’m in the Air National Guard, I’m wondering if there’s any way to skip Airman Leadership School (ALS) and use my Corporals Course from the Corps to meet the PME requirements for promotion to E-6.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Is there any chance of getting a waiver or having my prior training recognized in place of ALS? I’d appreciate any insights from those who’ve made a similar transition or have knowledge of the ANG’s policy on this.

Thanks in advance!

Sonic Boom on Linux?

I've been using Sonic Boom (Azure) as a much better working alternative to desktop anywhere. It's faster to load, more responsive, outlook stays logged in. Has anyone had any luck getting it working with a linux client like Remmina? Thanks.

Medical Retirement

I'm currently being medically retired in the air national guard and am wondering if I'll get the post 911 bill. I have no deployments but was on title 10 orders for my boot camp and tech school which was over 30 days and I'm being discharged due to a service connected disability. I've heard a lot of mixed answers. Can anyone help me out with their experience or with regulations to support their answer? Thank you.

How Are You Using AI Tools in Your Workplace?

Hey everyone!

I'm working AI implementation projects that get after productivity enhancements and curious to hear how folks are integrating AI tools into their daily workflows.

Things like - Streamlining tasks, automation of routine queep, creative or formal writing, or something else entirely—I'd love to know what tools you're using and how they're making a difference in your day-to-day.

With OPSEC in mind, it’d be awesome to hear specifics on:

  • The tools you're using (AskSage.mil, NIPRGPT, CAMOGPT, OneBrief, Fight Tonight, etc.)

  • Examples of tasks they’re helping with

  • Unique or unexpected benefits you've noticed

  • Challenges or limitations you've run into

-What do you want to see that would be most helpful to you?

Why do I want to know this -

Well... I'm rolling out the implementation of some AI tools that may make their way down to your workplace and I'd rather hear from folks now rather than read the salty feedback too late on Discord and Reddit

Thanks! Jaye

LEAP Open to Select ANG AFSCs now!

https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/3952594/leap-opens-to-select-ang-afscs/

LEAP has been a program I’ve been interested in for some time however, it hasn’t been made available to Guard members. There are a few AFSCs now which are able to participate and I anticipate more being added as time goes on!

AGR Orders Lapse

Hello all, I'm needing some guidance if you have any information. I'm currently finishing up my initial 3 year AGR tour and was told I will be able to continue as "career" airman to re-up another 3 years AGR. Well someone didn't inform me that a ACB was needed for a 3 year extension, so I never got that done. My orders end tomorrow and my commander has said I will be retained AGR and is going to to write me something up stating I will have orders and they will be backdated.

I have let my immediate chain know about this issue months prior and together we've not gotten any answers and since it's crunch time, we've gotten our squadron and group commander involved.

I've been advised to not come to work if not on orders (obviously for liability)

Is this a HRO issue? Is this a state issue? Or did someone just forget my stuff and screw me over?

I will lose my child care assistance, which I literally cannot afford to pay full price out of pocket, and my tricare coverage for myself and my dependent.

I apologize if I seem like I'm blabbing, but I'm just super stressed.

Bonus

I reenlisted in 2020 while overseas for a bonus of 20k. I got the first half of the bonus immediately and was supposed to get the second half sometime mid 2025(next year) I have been in inactive status due to personal reasons(work and single dad) for just under a year. I am ready to go back and am wondering if I will still receive the second half of my bonus in 2025 as I was supposed to, seeing as I wasn’t in the ING for more than a year.

Fed Tech Pay and Retirement

I’m debating about leaving my civilian job for a Fed Tech job for personal reasons but I don’t know much about the retirement plan for fed tech. Online it seems you can retire at age 50 if you have 20 years of service, does your service as a DSG count towards this or is it separate ? I’m an O-3 on the military side so that would be a GS-11/12 on the civilian side but according to the pay charts, they only make about $85-$90k a year which seems a bit low. Do they get allowances like the military ?

First Drill Weekend

I am a direct commission (chaplain) going to my first duty weekend Friday. I am just kind of wondering what to expect/ how can I not embarrass myself or the chaplain team. The one thing I know is that I know nothing. My guess is that I will follow the other chaplains around, meeting the unit, and just watching. I know our SGT assistant is going to work with me Friday morning on exactly this, not embarrassing the team. What advice do y'all have for a new LT/ chappie?

Deployment Backfill Childcare

I’m transferring to a new base and they would like me to backfill soon as they are deploying. I’d like to but problem is im 11 week postpartum as a single parent and my base is 3 hours from my HOR(where my support system is). Does anyone know if there is childcare for backfillers? Or is it just an AGR/Tech/full-timer thing? TIA

Kentucky Award

Does anyone on here from Kentucky know the date range for this award? Used to be in the unit, transferred to the IRR, never really cared about state awards but I'm trying to get my ribbon rack squared away for a shadow box. I know it was awarded in Oct of 2023.

Deciding between staying or leaving

I’m about to hit 11 years in the Guard. I know we’ve all heard “If you do 10 might as well do 20”. To me, the retirement benefits alone don’t seem worth it. I’m not using the Guard for school. I try to use it for more of a part time job. Going to drill & AT and occasional orders have always been easy money for me. Outside of that, I just don’t have patience for the hurry up and wait. Right now I have no desire to deploy. I’m not in love with my AFSC or my unit. It doesn’t seem like there are many good options but the extra money and having a job to fall back on is tough to leave. Has anyone else gotten out before hitting 20?
