Trying to figure out editable gradient masking

I have an image I'm attempting to darken, more at the top, less at the bottom.

https://preview.redd.it/6f0bwgc6mrge1.png?width=512&format=png&auto=webp&s=c9d761001a4848fbf0776527088276a579c17988

I've applied a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer which gets me to a uniformly darker image. Good first step. Then I want to use a gradient to mask the darkening effect as I get closer to the bottom.

I can accomplish this with a mask layer and a gradient fill. Works great. But I can't edit the gradient after I'm done, because (as I understand it) a mask layer behaves like a pixel layer. So I understand _why_ it behaves this way, the gradient is applied (destructively) to the mask layer after I click away.

How do I do this in a way that I can go back and edit the gradient later? I've tried:

* Applying a gradient overlay effect directly to the Brightness layer itself - doesn't change the result at all, no matter what values I edit.

* Creating a rectangle vector layer under the Brightness layer and using a gradient fill on the rectangle - no matter what values I set, the rectangle _brightens_ the image (presumably muting the darkening effect), but it's doing this whether I have the fill set to 0 or 100%, so I don't understand what's going on here.

What's the right way to use gradient fills in an editable fashion? I'm still new to Affinity (so ELI5) and image editing in general. I've been through a lot of tutorial videos on both the Affinity channel and elsewhere, and can't seem to figure this out. TIA!

Resizing

So I wanna put this on a t shirt but I have to scan it because there’s no high res version online anywhere, is there a way to size this as a Ratio Aspect 1:1 once I get it scanned up?

There aren't many Youtube tutorials

I've been saving Affinity Youtube tutorials to a playlist and realize there aren't many on Youtube. They all kind of repeat the same effect or lesson. Like removing background or double exposure. Wish there was more, as I'm not super great with the software yet

Are Photoshop tutorials transferrable?

Convert to curves removed all layers!

Been working on something the past few days, on iPad. Was messing with the shapes tool for a star and I touched the convert to curves button. It deleted all of my layers and just left the Group folders. Going back through history doesn’t fix it! Help!

Eraser Brush Not Working

This has been bugging me all day and I'm new to AffinityPhoto but every time I use the eraser brush to erase something in a photo, it doesn't erase anything. The same thing happens for every tool/brush that I use in the app. For example, the paint brush doesn't work when I try to paint. However, this paint brush icon pops up next to a layer every time I make an action using a tool. I just want my eraser brush to work again! If anyone knows how to fix this issue, please let me know!

Unable to update

Hello and thank you for your time. I am unable to update to the newest version of Affinity Photo.

When I first open AP I am prompted with a popup to download and update to the latest version. When I click confirm it appears to start to download the update, but after a few seconds it disappears, having done nothing. Has anyone else experienced this? When I try to download from Affinity directly it gives me an older version.

Guidance on creating a chasm

I'm taking map I exported from Dungeon Alchemist that looks like this:

Initial export, not much depth

I'm trying to give it the appearance of being _really_ deep, with a final result that looks something like this:

Desired end result, but... better

I created that effect by just overlaying a bunch of freehand polygons on top of the background layer in Foundry VTT. What I'd like to do is just edit the JPG itself to create this, so I can remove all of the polygons I layered on top of it. Note that the bridge needs to stay on top, and ideally will show black in between the slats (which I realize will probably take a lot of detailed editing). I'd like to get a much smoother transition from semi-transparent to fully opaque, but so far my efforts using the gradient fill tool have been a disaster.

Today is my first day using Affinity Photo and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'd appreciate any guidance on how I can get from the first to the second. I don't even know what kind of tutorial to search for to help guide me, because I am a complete newbie to this kind of photo editing. Thanks in advance!

RW2 preview

New user, I want to know if affinity photo has something like adobe bridge or something that lets you view multiple raw images before having them put into the actual app for editing. Like a selection area. I have over 200 pics to edit and I need a way work on all of them. Thanks in advance.

Getting an Affinity license

I'm looking into getting an Affinity license, but not sure what the best option is. Will I be using anything other than Affinity Photo? As I read somewhere you can get the cheapest option and it still works to use the license on both mac and windows.

So, I've been trying to learn how to develop RAW images and save the output to embedded layers, but I must be missing something.

Say l open a RAW file, make changes, click on Develop and then save to AFPhoto.

I assumed that if I had an embedded layer, I could turn that layer on or off and the original photo would still be there, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Is my whole understanding of this wrong?

I'm new to AP and I'm a little baffled by a t-shirt mockup .psd file I downloaded

The Just Ride graphic is what came with the file. It says to double click on the thumbnail of the "Your design here" layer to edit it but in AP that just zooms in on the graphic. When I import my png and place it above the Shadows overlay layer, the Just Ride graphic masks my png. How do I replace the Just Ride graphic in the "Your design here" layer with my own png? Thanks!

How to delete a semi-translucent background in this watercolor image

This watercolor graphic is on a white background. Because it's watercolor everything is a bit "semi-translucent". How do I remove the white background but preserve the "semi-translucency" effect so the painting can be placed on different color backgrounds without the chunky white background and edges?

https://preview.redd.it/lp1a93il7eee1.png?width=1133&format=png&auto=webp&s=800bd81c0db31acdf6e004c471e069bb546ba322

Most attempts at cutting out the background leave the blocky white in place and don't respect the semi-translucency. Here's a quick "cut out" of the background that shows what I mean.

https://preview.redd.it/t964wdp67eee1.png?width=1060&format=png&auto=webp&s=b38a94fa9cfbd9da021c049eb7bf4d571da14d33

I tried the grayscale mask trick, but that also seems to fail me. But I may be doing it wrong. See below.

Outline on Graphic Text - Size Setting

Hello and thanks for looking into this for me. Think I'm going crazy here.

I use Affinity Photo 2 to edit Public Domain Comics. Like getting rid of the Text and adding new one. One thing I can't seem to get to work is setting the Size of the Outline on Graphic Text. In the other Verions of Affinity Publisher 2 and Designer 2) I know thet there is a Window to turn on that is called Outline (I guess, it's called "Kontur" in german) and with that You can Change the thickness. I have no Problem getting the Outline, it's way to thin thou and I can't find the settings for the Outline anywhere.

The Screenshot is taken from Designer 2

Thanks in advance

How often is affinity photo in sale?

It may be a weird question, but I remember finding this program in the summer during a huge sale, and I forgot to buy it. Instead, I ended up with a 6-month trial. After some time, I started working on my creative projects again and realized I still had it. I used it for about 2 months, but the trial expired. I wish I had the money to buy it at full price, but sadly, that's not an option.

if you guys please perhaps know how often, or even at all, does it go into sale please let me know. I love this program.

Affinity Photo 2 BSODs my computer every time I use it.

I have recently switched to Affinity Photo 2 from Photoshop, and besides from having to switch between gimp constantly to export bmp and ico files, things have been going well... until recently. You see, there appears to be a very interesting incompatibility with Affinity Photo 2 (Photo.exe), and the Microsoft Windows USB 3.0 Hub driver (USBHUB3.SYS), causing my computer to consistently BSOD (the stop code is DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE), meanwhile the screen becomes completely frozen other than my mouse and all audio ceases. Because of this issue, I have had to uninstall Affinity Photo 2, and try to switch to solely gimp, which is not going very well as it cannot open afphoto files and converts psd text layers into pixel layers. Please, can someone, anyone, try to explain what is going on here and how to resolve it?

I am using a ROG laptop, running Windows 11, build 26100, on an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10300H @ 2.50GHz. The graphics driver I am using is an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650-Ti.

The following is the crash log as analyzed by WinDbg:
