How to change the default state of the "Pen Tool"?

I want to changee the default state of the ben tool. I would like the pen tool to start wtih:

  1. Perserve selection when creating new curves
  2. Add new curve to selected curves object

enabled by default.

I'm assuming something simple like this can't be done, but it's silly that it can't be. Is this correct?

letter to affinity, add to the list

Suggestions for Enhancing the Affinity Suite

The Affinity Suite is an exceptional set of tools, but there are a few additions that would elevate its functionality and appeal, especially for professional workflows:

  1. HTML Table Export in Affinity Photo While Affinity Photo includes a powerful slicing tool, it lacks the ability to export slices as an HTML table. This feature would be incredibly valuable for those working with web design or layout creation. Currently, Mac users are compelled to turn to Photoshop or Dreamweaver to fill this gap.
  2. Image Trace in Affinity Designer A robust Image Trace feature is notably absent in Affinity Designer, leaving Mac users reliant on Adobe Illustrator for vector tracing needs. Incorporating this tool would make Affinity Designer a more comprehensive solution for vector graphics.
  3. Focus Merge Enhancements in Affinity Photo The Focus Merge functionality in Affinity Photo is impressive and performs admirably. While not yet at the level of dedicated tools like Helicon Focus, it is a strong offering. The primary improvement needed is the ability to add open files directly into a focus merge project. This would streamline workflows by eliminating the need to export files from Capture One into a separate folder before importing them into Affinity Photo.

Adding these features would solidify the Affinity Suite as a truly unparalleled alternative to Adobe’s offerings, catering to the needs of a broader audience.

Help me choose a laptop

If you had to choose between these three, which would you get? I was leaning towards the ROG Flow because I thought it would be easier to edit photos in tablet mode because using a mouse is painful after a short time, but I've heard so many bad things about ASUS lately that now I'm not so sure that's a good idea. Thoughts?

Can I make a Contact Sheet on Affinity?

I shoot on both 35mm and 120 film and I always wanted to create a contact sheet after reading Contact High by Vikki Tobak. Or at least a mock version since I don’t have the capability to do it in a darkroom I also am not in possession of. Could I achieve this in Affinity like photographers can in Adobe? Problem is, Adobe has an automated tool for that purpose and Im not sure that Affinity does.

I have Affinity Photo v1. Can I use the Affinity V2 Universal License upgrade to get all 3 Apps?

The title pretty much says it all. I just have Affinity Photo v1. Can I use the Affinity V2 Universal License upgrade to get all 3 Apps? Or do I need to use the regular-price Universal License?

My Googlin' for the answer failed me.

TIA

Challenges shifting from Adobe to Affinity?

Hi All.

I've been using Pshop for over 20 years in purely professional applications, processing images for 4-color offset press as well as the web, so I've got lots of muscle memory and experience with the app and an established work flow. For those of you with similar ingrained chops who've transitioned to Affinity:

  1. What have been the challenges replacing Pshop with Affinity and were they easy to overcome?

  2. Is Affinity a suitable weapon for that target: professional output for clients in the advertising business?

Thank you in advance for your reply!

Tool or adjustment to correct exposure and white balance

Hi. I want to switch from Photoshop to Affinity Photo, but I have a big problem.

I work photographing products for catalogs and promotions. I take the photos in a small studio, then in Photoshop I clean them up and crop them. I use the “set white point” tool in the Curves setting a lot, to correct exposure and white balance.

I can't find a similar tool or setting in Affinity Photo, can you tell me how you do this correction?

Screen Capture Doesn't Record Layers Panel, etc.

I'm trying to record a video of my workflow in Affinity Photo so I can send instructional videos to a friend. For some reason it never records the functions on the right hand side of Affinity Photo, where I have my Layers Panel, Color Swatches, and Navigator. You can see my mouse float over there, but it's just a blank grey area where the functions should be.

I have Windows 11 and I tried the Windows Screen Recorder, and I downloaded and tried OBS, and both of them do the same excat thing. I tried searching the sub to see if anyone else was having this issue but didn't find anything, but sorry if I missed it and it was already brought up!

Update trouble with Affinity Photo

When I start Affinity Photo it says there is an update available (2.5.3.2516) with a link to download. I download the update, run the installer, and Windows says I already have that version installed. I restart Affinity Photo and the update message pops up again. I check my version and it's 2.5.2 so I start the installer and again am told I am already using latest so I click to reinstall. Start the app again and again get the update message and my version is still 2.5.2. Thoughts?

New to affinity, really struggling with how simple it is

Hi all, I’m in need of help in setting up my work space.

I’ve used photoshop for 7 year till about 2019 then switched to GIMP as my needs for image editing changed when I switched jobs, so I stopped paying for it.

I’m now in need of an editor to make UI elements for web use, so rather than pay the Adobe tax I bought affinity.

Now this is where I’m struggling, it seems to be missing basic tools available in PS, GIMP and Krita. I’ve listed these below, most of it comes down to lack of information on screen for precision. I also tried out the iPad version and I’m not sure how anyone can use that with any speed.

But I’m not one to rule it out or give up, I’m probably using it wrong, so any advice on how to make the blow possible is much appreciated.

Selection elliptical starts from center?! Need this to be top, left 0,0

When casting a selection no size bounds are given for accurate pixel level selection

Unsure how to modify after selection mask after the fact to transform

Canvas x, y from point in object isn’t shown even in the info tool, just the point in which I selected it

No line node selection tool

Fill tool and colouring in general, seems to require selection masking always

Stop Photo from Anti-Aliasing.

Is there a way to stop Photo from doing this? I move this image over one pixel and it anti-aliases it permanently.

Alternative to PS Filter gallery

Today, I pulled the trigger and bought the suite, love it.

One of the things about PS I miss though, is the Filter Gallery. I know, I know, I can do a lot by setting up macros and doing the extra work, but I'm a lazy SOB.

Is there a viable, not too expensive alternative to the PS Filter Gallery? I know about Filter Forge, but their pricing scheme is complicated and it's expensive. I'm on a mac so G'MIC is not an option.

Any hints or tips would be highly appreciated!

What and why would you use in post processing?

Hi ! I began post processing my photos a few weeks ago and at first i was happy with i did but now i want more, the tweakings (is that the word? Im french) in the Dev Persona in AP2 dont seem to be sufficient but i feel a bit lost on what to try / use to enhance my creativity, what associations would bring what results, why sharpening, with what tool, and on what persona. So i know im asking a lot and one answer wouldnt suffise. Beginner tutorials are way too simple and do not answer my questions. Do you know any reddit page, huge vidéo or playlist, podcast, even (not scammy or obvious) online classes that could help guide me ?

(Its also my first reddit post, dont hesitate on telling me if its too much for one post, or if im not in the right place…) Thanks a lot !

Édit : for example i seem to like to push the blackpoint by 1/2/3% but im not so sure as sometimes playing with contrast and exposition seem to do similar things. You understood id like to really learn what thing do what, its purpose and its effects instead of trying without knowledge and not beeing so sure about what i did.

**Is Affinity Photo right for me?** Coming from PS CS3

Long story short: I've been using Photoshop CS3 for years, but my old laptop died, and now I have to start fresh. A Photoshop subscription isn't an option since my main use is adjusting product pictures for web use. One of the main functions in Photoshop is the Trim function. I would get a product picture with a white background, but sometimes it would be the wrong size, have the wrong amount of white border around it, or not be centered. So, I would load it into Photoshop, click Trim to trim the white based on top corner pixel, then scale the picture, and finally use Canvas Size to make a new white border the exact size I wanted and with the picture perfectly centered.

As you understand, I won't pay Adobe a monthly subscription for this kind of use. I had a quick look at GIMP and Krita, but I didn't find similar functions, and the learning curve seemed a bit steep. So, I ended up here at Affinity Photo. It's fine with a one-time purchase but can't stand subscription models, but I'd like to know first if this would work for me. Other than the Trim function, I would like to have a good solution to move the background on product pictures.

So, would Affinity Photo be the right product for me, or is there something better? The platform is Windows 11, and I travel a lot, so online software (web-based) is not an option.

Focus stack, and then clone stamp issue

This might be a bit of a tough one to explain.

I'm new to focus stacking, but on my first attempt I am quite happy overall.

Following the initial stacking I cleaned up some minor ghosting, etc. by using the clone stamp tool and the sources panel. That worked great and I think I understand how that part works.

Subsequently played with some unsharp mask, levels, brightness/contrast using non-destructive layers.

However, there was obviously a spec of dust on my sensor or lens. So following my normal editing process I created a normal pixel layer, clone stamp tool, source: current layer & below. This is normally a super easy and straight forward thing to fix.

But when I attempt to select a "clean" spot to clone (from the bottom/source layer) it clones the wrong image info. I figure it's something to do with the source layer being a composite of many images. But no matter what I do I can't get it to clone what I expect.

Thoughts?

Edit: I switched to Affinity Photo about a year ago and have really been enjoying it! YouTube has been a great source of tutorials. But I never thought to see if there was a Reddit group until now!

Mathematical color adjustment - Is this possible?

Hi,

I am a total newbie, not just to Affinity, but to all kinds of drawing/photoprocessing/editing software in general.

I want to be able select an area of my photo, and then have the software adjust the color of each pixel within that selection by say +5R, +45G, -25B. So if pixel one started at RGB 100,100,100 it would become RGB 105, 145, 75. If pixel 10 started as RGB 125, 15, 68 it would become RGB 130, 60, 45

It seems like that should be something a computer graphics program could do. But I don't have the vocabulary to even know how to look for the help files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Color Efex Pro 4 plugin not working, but Affinity says it is?

I'm having an issue with Color Efex Pro 4 from the Nik Collection. I was able to use it without problem on my previous computer, but since I upgraded to a new Mac Mini, suddenly the plugin doesn't work. It appears in the plugin menu, and the Photoshop Plugins preference pane says it's working. But when I select it, nothing happens. No error, just nothing.

Any ideas what might be the issue?

How do I move a selected part of an image in all selected layers?

I don't want to have to move each part individually in each layer. This could lead to things displacing themselves

In Photo how can I merge a bunch of curves into one curve?

I'm trying to create a vector mask.
I've created the shape I want by creating a bunch of curves.
But I actually just want one curve to exist. I want that curve to be in the shape of the multiple curves that I have.

So how do I merge the multiple curves into one single curve?

I tried 'right-click'->'geometry'->'merge curves'.
But this seemed to delete some areas of some of my curves without actually merging the curves.

Edit lots of photos in Affinity

How can one efficiently edit a large amount of photos? Is it really a one by one task or is there a much simpler way to do it? You can obv copy and paste edits but I usually use the selection tool so that makes it harder to just copy and paste my edits.
