Tips to help get milk flowing (aka milk reflex or letdown)

I came across this great article on different ways to help encourage your milk to flow - when you are producing. This article caught my eye because it goes a little more I depth about the milk reflex (when milk starts flowing)

Hope it helps!

For people that induced with no history of pregnancy and with no meds: how much milk do you make?

I'm just so curious, if supply depends on the demand, is it possible to make a lot of milk (even after years)? I would love to have a big supply in the far future and I just wonder if it's possible for anyone with enough commitment?

Going off meds

So, I've been half heartedly inducing for over a year. I have gadgets and gizmos aplenty- but too much dopamine.

Now, that I am no longer at a job that was crushing my soul- I'm finding that I don't need so much welbutrin and adderall. I've cut my welbutrin from 300mg/day to 150mg/day. I'm currently on 20mg of adderall and I'm going to spend the next month tapering off the adderall. My goal is to get completely off adderall, then go off welbutrin. I plan to be off both meds by January. (I'm working with a doctor so all good.)

I'm just super excited because I now feel like I have a real opportunity to finally be able to lactate. I've consistently produced duct fluid, but that's it. Now, I should be able to raise my prolactin levels enough to produce milk.

I'm also not sure which gadget to use to most effectively raise my prolactin. I have pumps, a tens machine, and massagers. Any advice would be welcomed.

I also take moringa and goat's rue.

Sub update: The Wiki in Post Format, plus Post Flairs!

Hello everyone! I hope you're all having a lovely weekend! I had some time today to finally provide the Wiki in a post format and I hope you all find it to be easier to navigate than the wiki itself, particularly those of you who browse on the Reddit mobile app! If you check it out, I welcome you to leave a comment on this post to provide any feedback you might have! My next step is to revise some portions of it, add some stuff, and then follow this up by also converting the FAQ to a post format like what I just did for the wiki, so I can more easily add to it.

I did this because the way the wiki is now is so hard to browse in the app. You can't easily search it in any way, and it's not as visible in the spot it's in on its own compared to seeing the post link in the Community Highlights on the front page of this sub. You can also use the function to search within the comments of a post to help look for stuff too. I will not hold my breath about whether or not its conversion to a post form will make us see less posts by folks who obviously ignored everywhere we have it plastered to read the wiki first before posting, but maybe it will help make it more digestible than the enormous text wall it is in its original form. I was going to make a separate wiki website, but I can't afford it and our computer died, so I have no way to do that for now. When we fix our computer at a later date, I'll look into it then.

If you browse Reddit on PC...I don't know if you will find this post format to be as helpful, unless you're a tech genius where I am not one. I couldn't figure out what happened to the setting in Chrome that I thought used to be there where you could keep it from opening the link in a new tab when you clicked a link; so on PC, it kind of opens each link in the table of contents in a new tab and I hate that. I also couldn't get the line spacing to work correctly in the post, to for PC and mobile users alike, sorry for that as well. The double space thing does not work, nor does the backslash.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So there's that, and also, I wanted to mention this nifty thing I started doing where I have started adding post flairs to all new posts on the sub. I'm going to gradually go through and mark as many posts as I can with these flairs. Eventually, you'll be able to choose to browse all posts marked with a flair of your choosing, so you can check out a bunch of posts for a specific topic you might want to read up on. They look cute and I hope they serve you all well. I just realized I have to do a thing so that this function actually shows up on the side bar. I'm going to post this and do that now. Please feel free to let me know what you think of that as well!
Thank you all for being a part of this community! Please continue to enjoy the weekend!
Edit: So the post flairs are enabled. In the Reddit App, at the top of the front page of the sub, you should see next to the "All" button stuff like "Huge Success" or "Inducing Lactation." If you swipe right, you can pick the flair and it will only show posts with that flair in your view of the sub.
Pump getting very little, while husband getting almost a half ounce - what gives?
I wrote about this in my mornings daily pump comment, but thought I would put it in a separate post ... just incase someone has the same roadblock.
So I pump with the Pumpables liquid flanges (new size arriving next week to try). No matter the pump (Spectra S1 or Pumpables Genie) I seemed to have stopped going beyond expressing just a trace.
My husband, for a few days now, is able to get a little bit of milk with every suckle & after 2-3 suckles he swallows. Says it tastes like regular milk, no more salty taste, and doesn't taste watered down anymore either.
When he suckles he compresses and holds it for a few seconds, then let's go. It's a slow suckle for the most part.
For my last pump session I did just try using the Freemie Liberty II pump with the liquid flanges. However, this time I kept the suction on the very first level, and put the cycle up as high as I could to get the long pause. This seemed to work a little bit. Got a couple very small beads from both breasts. I tried this because he mentioned he holds it against the roof of his mouth for a few seconds before letting go. Neither the Spectra S1 or the Pumpables Genie Advanced seem to have a long enough pause like the Freemie Liberty, without a higher suction which causes both of my nipples to hit the ends of the flange. I would try the BabyBuddha but I can't justify getting another pump any time soon lol
Not sure what else to do ... am using the 19mm liquid flange with single pumping. Am waiting for my order of another 19mm to arrive. Hoping double pumping will give my breasts what they're looking for.
I also ordered a Momcozy lactation massager. Am hoping between the new flange size, double pumping, with a very high cycle on the Freemie and the massager will do the trick to get my breasts to let go of the milk we know is there with the pump ... and not just hold out until hubby suckles.
Thoughts? What things have you done when you've gotten to this point?
Welcome to the ABF Wiki: Post Version
I'm going to put the wiki into post form to see if it makes it more accessible or easier to view. Under construction! Please do not comment on this post!
If you're viewing this on Desktop, you might need to change your settings for opening new tabs when clicking the links for each section so that it doesn't open up the comment in a new tab. Edit: This setting use to exist, but I can't seem to find it. If you know what I'm talking about and can find it, please reply to this post or send a modmail :( Until then, unfortunately, it seems like optimal use of this will be in the garbage Reddit app.
Also, I can't make the line spacing work between the bullets and I'm sad because on mobile the links are super close together. Apologies to my fellow sausage finger having friends.
2:17 pm: paused to go buy cat food, will continue when I get back. It will link to normal wiki after power pumping for now.
9:18 pm: everything in the actual wiki is now provided in this post, and the links below correspond to the comments. Next step is to go through and edit a few things; next step after that is to add stuff to the wiki that has been sitting on my to do list for a bit. I'll be making a post shortly mentioning this post, where you can drop feedback on what you think about having this in this format.
how do you keep your nipple center in the flange
i’ve been pumping for a year now and I’m just started having this problem where my nipple doesn’t want to sit in the center of the flange it kind of tilt out to the side and then as soon as I fix it, the milk starts to squirt out again. How do I keep it centered
Milk drops without any medications I’m surprised
So recently I’ve been thinking of ABF a lot I wasn’t always into it but there is this one guy, I’m not with him currently but I like him a lot and since than I’ve been thinking dreaming and fantasising about breastfeeding him a lot and I’ve never been pregnant never took any medication that will induce or any such herbal products neither am I being sucked on (I’m just imagining it like I’m just imagining him latching on suckling on my boobs) but physically it’s not happening I’m healthy a person all test results also are normal but despite all this I’m getting milky drops I’m not taking any kind of medication, why is this happening? Is my imagination turning into manifestation?
Pumpables Liquid Flanges ... my thoughts
I have been using these flanges for roughly a month now. It's took a bit for my temperamental elastic righty to come around. Now I can't use hard plastic flanges at all as they end up hurting after lot!
I have used them with the Spectra S1, Freemie Liberty II and Pumpables Genie Advanced pumps. I got more response from my Spectra with them than the others. However, I found a video from New Little Life on YouTube that went into the specs of both the Pumpables Genie Advanced and Spectra. She said that both pumps motors are pretty similar and very close in strength. I found this impressive (and so did she apparently) for the Pumpables being a portable pump.
I ended up switching to using the Genie pump instead of the Spectra as the vibration of the Spectra was starting to get a little uncomfortable and annoying.
I think the reason why my girls are responding well to these liquid flanges over all the other flanges I've tried is because it gives them not only suction but the compression that they get while suckling.
I got my husband to help me find as close to the same rhythm and suction/compression he does while suckling. This has been making a difference too.
Is momcozy s12 pro really good to start inducing?
I've read pumps reviews on here and was looking somewhere else but I still feel like I need input about it, would you guys recommend it to start? Or maybe something else? I really want it to be as quiet and efficient in doing its work as it can
Supply Questions
I’m 12 days into lactating (3 months and 2 days into inducing total) and I feel like I should be producing more??
I get less than an ounce a day, from 5-7 pumping sessions. I seem to get more when i express or when my husband suckles. I get a few light sprays when i express too.
Should i try supplements or anything else to increase my supply or should I just wait and let it build up naturally?? Almost a month on Dom too! 30mg a day
I took some pics of the milk I collected but can’t post them 😩 it’s definitely a lot less than an ounce and barely covers the bottom of the bottle
Recommendations for wearable pumps?
I currently have a small, cheap pump I found on Walmart.com over a year ago that works just fine... Other than the connection cord being kind of finicky lately but that's easily worked around lol. I figured I may as well take advantage of some of these Black Friday deals on Amazon has anyone tried either of these hands-free wearable pumps?
Go Around The Table And Say What You're Thankful For! Milky Version, US Thanksgiving 🥛+ 🦃
Its nearing my midnight pump for my first Thanksgiving of induction and as much as I hate the cliche of people wanting to go around the table to say what they're thankful for, it's a little easier here and I'll keep it ABF specific. Please add whatever comes to mind for you!
  • I'm grateful I have found some success in this and that my body is healthy and so is my mind, despite the glorious oxytocin and devious "soft" hormones these boobs throw at me. I will remind myself where I was months ago and see where I am now and be thankful my body is a badass.
  • I'm unendingly grateful I have a supportive milk loving man to share this with and that he cautiously brought up this idea one random day. The time we steal from our busy lives for this is unique and nothing I'd ever share with anyone else. I love our milky secrets 🥰. I'm so thankful he hopes we never have to stop until I am ready and that he is supportive and patient, even if he calls flanges cones, but has happily learned all about this along the way.
  • I'm thankful for the femininity I didn't realize I had "lost" over the years that this seems to have gifted me back. I was unknowingly missing, craving it, and now get to 'secretly' feel and carry it with me daily. This is a benefit for ME. But I do love how it's added to things my person may never notice and helped me love my body in new ways.
  • Im thankful for a best friend I can share these milestones with who doesn't judge and who listens when silly hormones make me cry for absolutely no reason or all the reasons.
  • I never thought I'd say I was thankful for a Reddit community! But I am so thankful we all have a place as a safe and supportive outlet. Plus, I can almost hear the bug zapper sound of creepers getting shut down by us all!
I hope everyone has a great day tomorrow, if youre in the US, please enjoy Thanksgiving however you please, I hope it is bountiful in whatever means the most for you. Don't forget, nothing like some milk with your dinner...and dessert! 🤭
Edit: spelling
Switched pumps and going backwards.
I had been primarily using a Spectra electric pump. I didn't like how "tied up" it made me. I switched a couple weeks back to an Elvie pump and I feel like I'm losing progress and going backwards. I feel like my breasts aren't as firm, not as big. I haven't produced anything from either pump. I just feel different. Anyone have ideas why this could be happening? It's frustrating.
I’m so milky now!!!
Omg! This is the most I’ve ever induced. I’ve never been pregnant before. I’ve been inducing on and off for about 5 years. The first time inducing I only took fenugreek and pumped once or twice a day and had a partner that suckled only when we got intimate. Through a 6 month period in this protocol I was able to get drops of milk here and there. I stopped for a while then restarted the same protocol but with goat’s rue and fenugreek a couple times with no consistent efforts and 2-3 pump sessions whenever I could manage, eventually I was able to produce more drops at a time, during this time I did some fasting and for whatever reason (maybe because prolactin levels increase with fasting) I was able to produce some tiny milk sprays too! 2 years ago I got my hand on some dom and by that time my partner was more into my process and willing to suckle if I asked, with his suckling and pumping and dom I was able to produce longer milk streams. Fast forward to this year after a breakup in December I found an ABF interested friend and he was willing to help me induce more seriously, we started getting together for sessions and he got me dom, we’ve been consistently suckling and inducing for the last 8months. And yesterday I felt a “full” feeling more than I’ve ever felt before. My partner is away on a trip at this moment and so I hand expressed, to my surprise there were crazy long streams of milk coming out of more than 2 ducts and each stream would last for about 3-5 seconds which is crazy! I’ve never produced this much and it’s amazing success!!! I’m so happy I could cry 😭 I can’t wait until he’s back and he can suckle all this milk I suddenly I’m able to make blush
Our protocol for the last 6 months (after trying things out for 2 months and deciding we’re serious about moving forward and now in a relationship) is this:
20mg of dom 3 times a day (if I feel good and willing I’ll do an extra 20-30 mg every 3 days) 2 fenugreek capsules a day 2 caps of a lactation supplement (fenugreek free) - the one I take has: sunflower lecithin, moringa, milk thistle and fennel seed. Mother’s milk tea whenever I feel like it 3 or 2 pumps a day (depending on my day: moved back in with family and I keep it very private) 15 minutes of TENS unit 2x a day or 3x a day if I need to replace a pump session. My partner suckles 3-4 days out of the week. When I spend the night and a couple days with him he suckles as much as he wants, I’d say in 24hrs he tries to at least suckle 4 times throughout the day/night. It could be more depending on whether he has a lot of work or not. Hand expression whenever I feel like it and don’t have a pump available. I love nipple stimulation and sometimes I just have nipple pumps on for a couple hours a day while I run errands or do work or whatever, I love keeping my nipples stimulated.
Hope this helps and drop any questions you might have 😊
Happy pumping!
Struggling to pump only
Hello! Hoping for some insight. I nursed two babies for four years total, stopping the last one around 5 years ago, always struggled to pump(AND hand express) despite being an overproducer. It was really tough because if I had a night away with a babysitter, I’d be in pain, breasts giant and hard as rocks but they wouldn’t let the milk go for anything but a human. I think the best luck I had back then was with freemie cups.
Fast forward to now, my partner and I realized we’re both into it and I started producing relatively easily/quickly. They definitely get milk, I hear them swallow , they confirm, and there is a noticeable increase over time…but I still can. not. Hand express or pump! Even mid session. Sometimes I can get a few drops by hand randomly or maybe one via electric or manual pump but that’s about it. I have a spectra pump, tried every different size insert for the flanges. What I think is the right size definitely feels different like they might actually work at first but then nothing! I’d like to be able to maintain supply when we’re apart.
I do have raynauds and have noticed nipple blanching before and now but it doesn’t seem to be too bad and hasn’t caused any obvious issues otherwise. I try warm and/or ice, before but nothing seems to help too much other than sometimes I can hand express a tiny bit in the shower and that’s it.
Just wondering if anyone has run into this or has any ideas? I’m considering trying the pumpables liquid shields but thats all I’ve been able to come up with.
Thank you!
A Discussion on Pump and Flange Interchangeability - I Used To Be So Confused! 😅
pretend I'm a badass DJ, arm in the air, looking out across all you awesome people for just one second
GOOD EVENING MY AWESOME MILKY PEOPLE!!! IT'S MILKY THE WHITE ON THE ONES AND TWOS, THE CHICK WHO TALKS TOO MUCH!! cue milk lasers 🎧🎛🎚
Ok. water chug, pushes up glasses, adjusts the pump
Tonight I replied to a post with questions regarding flanges and interchanging them with a pump. As it happened to be my OG starter pump, the memory of all my early confusion flooded back. Wondering how I'd ever not be pigeon holed to THIS bottle and THIS flange w/o buying all these expensive pumps. How do I get the other cool stuff I am reading you guys using too?? Much like the Poké-man craze...I wanted to catch them all. Fast forward to today and I'm researching anything I can, willing to try any I can afford, growing my Amazon wishlist at an exponential rate, and bitching every time I can't get my itty bitty nipp-y size. I have a bad case of "17mm entitlement". You may have noticed in previous posts.
I'd like to share what I wrote to the other redditor (Yes even more words! I am apologetically loquacious). Even if it isn't your pump it may help to explain the thought process to anyone still trying to learn. I added links for clarity and would be happy to answer any question if I can help, in the comments so it helps everyone, NO CHATS. Then I invite anyone who wants to share their pumps and what has worked for them, or their questions that maybe another can answer! Let's help each other, at least we aren't like the crazy Facebook mom groups! We are the crazy ABF people 🤍 (^o^)/\(^-^)
My other pumps not mentioned are my wearable Momcozy S9 Pro that I love, wearable Paru P10 that I despise. I have bought other accessories for the MC and the inserts linked below fit it as well, I also have dedicated 17mm full flanges for it.
My comment from the other post: Well, here goes, I'll list them for you. Let me know if you have questions. I do have 4 pumps, but the NCVI was my first and is very loved. :) I am a 17mm, btw.
This is my NCVI, so we know we mean the same one, currently on Black Friday sale for anyone reading! Such an amazing kit and affordable option.
The easiest solution is to use the 24mm flanges that came in the kit and purchase a set of inexpensive inserts, these are designed to fit inside the 24mm's and are very economical and comfy. Folks who haven't used inserts before may not know you need to make sure they fit your pump's existing flange size, then they narrow the opening with soft, clear silicone.
You can utilize a great brand like Zomee for an "aftermarket" set that fits to size, it makes it easier to visualize the nipple if you dont want small fiddly parts.
But what you'll find is that these connectors are the key to the NCVI. Once fitted to your tubing, you can add a plethora of options. I'll list some I have below that I use with all my non wearable pumps. (Pink=NCVI, Aqua=Zomee, White=Baby Buddha)
Tonight, I'll be trying these Maymom Spectra 18mm hard flanges to try to solve an issue with my left breast not letting down lately. All I did was pop on the connectors. They now fit my NCVI and my Baby Buddha.
Fun fact! My beloved workhorse Baby Buddha has the exact same bottles, tubing, diaphram, and duck bill as the NCVI!! At nearly FOUR TIMES the price, but youre buying the pump's strength. The NCVI bottle is better as you can remove the flange itself. The entire Zomee line of bottles/accessories can also replace both NCVI and BB parts!
I also find the most economical way to get more connectors is to purchase the Y connector kit from Zomee. This Y design is for the BB, but you get the most connectors for your money that I have found, and I have done a LOT of research.
This brings me to my absolute holy grail flange. The Pumpables Liquid Kit ✨️angels sing in the distance✨️ The initial investment of around $30 is beyond worth it and unless you're sterilizing non stop you will not be replacing these often! The compression and fit are just beautiful. When you do need to replace or size up, it's only $12, and they offer coupons for $5 off in your email when you leave a review occasionally.
In summary, you have the worker bee, the pump itself. Now you need to find what you like and what feels good. :)
For general knowledge and flange/pump combo questions and thorough reviews I highly advise checking out Genuine Lactation's YouTube Channel and also her website . She is realistic, scientific, and breaks things down. She will even put things together on camera so you know how they go together and function. She does comparison charts on her site about suction strength! It is so great to know what you're buying when you're shopping.
TLDR: Want to use all the cool flanges but only have one pump? Here's kinda how.
Ordered Dom and Made a Mistake
I just placed an order for 100 tablets of dom, and while re-reading the NG protocol i quickly realized that 100 is nowhere near enough :( I can't believe I misread everything so hard. I kind of feel a bit stupid now. I thought you only needed 30 mg a day but instead it's 90.
I wish that there was a way to increase milk with a lower dosage...... if there is a way someone please let me know.
Boyfriend found my pumps - decided to come clean
I’ve fantasised about lactating for over a decade - had two kids but formula fed them both for personal reasons. Both times my milk “came in” but post partum it didn’t have the same appeal, I was hormonal and sore and I let it dry up.
Fast forward to the present day and I’ve been fantasising a lot, and went as far as to purchase wearable electric pumps. It feels INCREDIBLE. Much fun has been had on my own experimenting with modes and intensity. I also bought domperidone online but had put off taking it because my boyfriend didn’t know about my fantasies and I wasn’t sure how he would take it. I didn’t want to “waste” the dom by taking it when I couldn’t pump routinely.
I was charging the motors from my pumps the other day and boyfriend found them. He questioned it right away asking why I had them and I just said I had been curious and since I enjoy having my boobs sucked it seemed like a fun thing to try. He was on board with this and asked if we could try it together - I was a bit shy about as he hasn’t seen the actual base of the pumps and I’m worried he will see them and it won’t be very sexy.
I waited till he went to work and put the pumps on and took some “after” photos - the pumps have been making my boobs bigger and more “pillowy”, and it of course gives you some fat juicy nips just after! He loved the look and when he came home he “played” with them as he calls it (basically nursing but less committed).
Since I know he knows the pumps are there I have started the dom - currently on day two. I still don’t know how he feels about actual milk coming in but I feel like I’m yearning for it to happen. Whenever I hint at the subject he doesn’t really commit either way, and twice now he has asked me to use the pump before he comes home - which makes me think he wouldn’t want to see it in action.
I know I’m never going to get milk in this quickly, but is the bigger cushiony boobs and thick nipples a good sign? Uncertain how to approach the subject with my boyfriend since he’s not shown any direct willingness.
At the moment I pump on my way to work at 8am, on my lunch break at noon, on my way home at 3-4pm, then I try sneak in a pump in secret or encourage him to play with them around 7-8pm. Then pump when he’s in bed. He’s working nights the next few nights so I’m planning to put a night pump in to move things along but can’t do this once he’s back to working days.
Am I going to struggle?
