In anticipation of Wanderers vs Victory in Parramatta on Sunday which should be a cracker, came across this interesting article from 10 years ago in the peak A League period! https://www.theroar.com.au/2013/10/29/victory-vs-wanderers-is-the-a-leagues-biggest-rivalry/
In my opinion I think that Western Sydney Wanderers vs Melbourne Victory should be one of the highlight fixtures of the league. Nurturing that rivalry might help in creating more exciting games and be entertaining for fans of those clubs, as well as neutrals. Early on when the Wanderers came into the league that fixture was just as big as the Sydney Derby for us. WSW and VIC are both big clubs and have the best active support in the country. They also have quite a similar style which is always what makes for a big rivalry.
The Big Blue would obviously still have its place, being the original big rivalry of the league, but I really do think that WSW-VIC can be just as big, if not bigger!
Being on away trips with the RBB against Victory in 2013 and 2016, they were some of the most exciting games I have ever attended as a football fan with a brilliant atmosphere. This game in 2015 at Parramatta below didn’t even have Victory active support there, but the atmosphere was still incredible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KJY1HC53Fo
It might be a start to figure out a name for this fixture, any ideas?. We already have the Big Blue, the Original Derby, surely there is appetite and a need for another strong interstate rivalry. Wanderers-Victory has shown in the past that it can pull a crowd and have an intense atmosphere.
It is my pleasure to help and spread knowledge. It was handed down to me and the only thing i can do to repay that knowledge is to pass it down to the younger generation. If you need help, hit me up.
