Differential dilemma

Years ago the rear differential in my 95 4runner was creating a lot of problems - I couldn't afford to fix it and the mechanic removed it.

Fast forward to now, my car is being totally restored. The mechanic is going to reinstall the rear differential but apparently, some 4runner's have capped differentials vs. uncapped. I have called 3 different toyota dealers to give them my vin # and they cannot tell me whether mine had been a capped or uncapped differential. Any ideas from this wise group?

Oil leak 94 Fwd automatic

Spoiler: This is going to be a lot.

As of yesterday, I am a proud owner of a 2nd. I posted maybe a month or so ago one of the listings I was looking at; it ended up having way more rust, so I passed. Nonetheless, all the advice provided helped further my pursuits, and after some time I found a better option. Thank you all for the previous help and hopefully some advice to come.

I drove this beast back 116 mi, including one massive mtn (for the area) where she topped out at 45 mph and may have done some damage. I know the oil pressure gauge is wonky, but when I checked the level today, my engines were practically out of oil. It was hardly on the dipsticks low LVL indicator.

Couple questions: The leak, as shown in the video, seems to be heading forward from the oil pan as well as splattering. Any thought as to where it could be coming from?

What oil should I add back into the engine? I’ve got a buddy who has a shop 40 miles north. I had planned to visit, if that was possible, after adding some more oil in and saying a prayer.

Outside of the leak, what/if anything should I immediately replace—belts, fluids? Ball joints?

3VZE Water Pump Question

I just put a new water pump on my 1995 3VZE, and noticed the new one has a post in a spot the old one doesn’t. I assume this water pump is meant for the spring tensioner engines. My question is- will this work for my hydraulic tensioned engine? Or will that single little post somehow screw everything up. Everything lines up fine, and I’m really hoping I dont have to wait longer on parts to get the exact right one. God willing, this will be my last question here!

Oil gauge 1994 4w 3.0

Total car newbie here.

Just got the car back from the shop after a 3 month engine swap. Seems to be running good no check engine rpm is all good when driving too. When I turn the key to on it goes up but as soon as I start the engine it drops to low and doesn’t fluctuate (see picks) took it to another shop they drove it and said the oil was good but the gauge is messed up and I need a new cluster. What do you guys think also how does it sound.

They filled it with 5w30 semi synthetic oil too is that ok?

Part numbers?

You all have been so helpful in such a brief time since I joined this great group.

I’m new to all of this…totally restoring (not myself) my 95 4runner. I’m trying to help source parts. Where does one find all the part numbers for the specific car part? TYIA!

Where do I find running boards?

3VZE Timing Question

Hey everyone, I am replacing my water pump due to a leak, and doing the timing belt too since I’m not certain when it was done last. I took the fan pulley with tensioner off, and while i was turning the crank to TDC, the belt slipped and now my passenger side cam is out of alignment. As far as I know, I should be able to rotate this back so it lines up, but want to know if I should turn it clockwise or counter clockwise. I still need to make a tool to remove the crank pulley. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Chasing a leak.

So i seem to have a power steering leak coming from the wheel well area. This is on a 2nd Gen 4Runner with the 3.0. Does anyone know what this rubber end is for? it’s got some oil kind of fluid on it but isn’t connected to anything.

Thank you!

3VZE

Good morning, today I would like to share with you my experience with the 4runner 1992 3.0. Yesterday i drove it for a trial after purchasing it from a guy, who in his turn seems like he was not doing regular fixes. However, i noticed that sitting in the cabine you feel like noise and pressure similar to geir's voice and a lot of heat surrounding the central console (apparrently from the transmission). Also I went to the village and the road is veeeery normal but surely inclined. However, it doesnt run.....the max speed reached was 40 km/h is that really normal!!!!!????

Investigating severe vibration/noise at highway speeds

Hello.

I’m restoring a ‘95 that hasn’t really been driven in 20 years but in pretty good condition. Stock 2wd automatic. 150k miles.

I replaced a lot of the hoses, radiator, water pump, fuel pump, timing chain, spark plugs, power steering pump, mass air flow air, wheel bearings, etc. I plan on doing the exhaust manifold bypass soon.

So now I’m trying to diagnose a bad vibration/noise/lack of power at highway speeds 40mph+.

A local shop said he believes it’s an issue with the torque converter inside the transmission or the driveshaft. He isn’t sure which. I’ve read some online about OEM driveshaft issues with the “donut” or u-joints. So I’m leaning towards installing a new drive shaft or just having the u-joints rebuilt. Thoughts?

Also, any other recommendations on service to do now?

Trail Gear steering box

Looking for some first hand experience with the Trail Gear steering box. They base the design off the 1st gen platform, but they told me it’ll bolt up to the 2nd gens but the steering ratio will be different.

Anyone here put one of these on their 4runner?

Ignition Issues

Good evening,

I’m having an issue getting a truck I purchased over the weekend running. It’s a 1993 3.0 4x4 auto with ~200,000 miles, and apparently sat for a few years. I’ve gone through the following steps to try and get it running, to no avail:

-Put 12 gallons of fresh gas in the tank -Replaced plugs + wires -Replaced fuel pump (this was apparently why it was parked) -Tested G, G1, G- and NE circuits on the distributor to rule out cam/crank position sensors and found resistance through each circuit to be within spec -Checked for voltage/proper resistance on the FP and B+ terminals on the diagnostic port before attempting to start with the ports jumped -Tested resistances on afm, everything was within spec -Swapped coil and ignitor with new units to rule out any issues with them -Verified spark at each plug individually using a test light -Took off timing cover and verified cams are timed with the distributor/integrity of timing belt -Verified operation of COR relay (I can hear it when I manipulate the key)

The car will turn over fine and at a good speed, but not fire. I can hear the fuel rails filling when I jump the terminals on the diagnostic port or manipulate the flap on the afm , and I can smell fuel in the tailpipe after I crank it for a while, so I think I should have fuel. As mentioned above, I have good spark and pretty much every part of the ignition system is new, so I’m stumped.

The only leads I have are a code 21 for the O2 sensor (but it’s my understanding this shouldn’t keep the car from starting), and I have no tach signal. It is my understanding that the tach should move a few hundred rpm when cranking, so I’m thinking I might have an ECU issue? Or should I get back to basics and verify I even have compression? I skipped this initially bc I was told the car would fire for a bit off starting fluid.

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is my first 2nd gen so the electronics are foreign to me.

Sell or Restore?

I have a 2004 SR5 4Runner V6 with 240k miles. It runs fine and has served me well but needs a new catalytic converter which would cost ~$3500 to fix. I’d love to keep it and restore it but is it worth it?

Tire Size Recommendations

91 22RE 5-speed, currently running 225/75r16. Looking to get some bigger tires that would be good for the northwest Ontario winters. Wondering what I could get away with, without needing to lift the old girl. Any suggestions are appreciated!

LED Instrument Bulb?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to replace my high beam indicator bulb with a blue LED version, since I read that should make it work with LED headlights. I am having trouble finding an actual bulb to buy, as different forums say different things, and I’ve already bought the wrong ones once. I am looking specifically for the bulbs that will replace the “Toshiba V2” ones. Any help is greatly appreciated!
