Inspiration required

Hi all! I'm new to the community and could use your help.

I'm starting a W&G campaign with a few friends who all play 40k and appreciate the lore. They have already made their characters (tier 2) during our session 0:

  • A sanctioned psyker
  • An underhive scavvy
  • A skitarius
  • A former death Cult Assassin

The campaign will start in a hive city on Gilead Prime, they have already met and agreed on broadly doing "the good thing", standing up for the little guy etc.

This will be my first time as a GM for W&G. We all have played D&D before so are familiar with an RPG type game.

I'm still thinking on a good start for the campaign. A good starting "mission" and a good reason for them to do this. Maybe or maybe not tied to a bigger picture.

I had a lot of ideas but nothing felt right. I was hoping some of you guys have some (or maybe even multiple) ideas for starting missions, plot hooks or both?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cultural backgrounds instead of regimental homeworld and publishing own sourcebooks

Greetings all I had two queries that I felt didn’t warrant two separate posts.

To give context to the post having gm’ed an only campaign with the same regiment for three years I have spent the last year worldbuilding the homeworld and their heritage. It’s a agriworld but one with multiple distinct cultures which I felt was a more interesting take on the typical monoculture you see in 40k literature.

To this point I came up with a idea that instead of picking a regimental homeworld my sourcebook for the planet would be one where a player picks their cultural environment that their player grew up in and that it could allow for more diverse player characters and allow for greater rp. So far they have been written similar to how regimental homeworlds provide bonuses but if anyone has done something similar I would be curious as to any advice you have for balancing backgrounds.

The second question is a simpler one but with all this work to produce a interment identity along with more info into a sourcebook do those who had done so have any advice regarding potential monetisation and how that would work with commissioned artwork for the book?

[DH2] What is the workflow of using a Flamer ?

Hello all,

I am just a bit confused on how to use a flamer, here is the current workflow we are using in our game right now.

  1. Declare the attack zone (20m cone).
  2. Target in the cone can declare if they are using their reaction to dodge, before their agility test.
  3. If no dodge, roll agility (+0) to know if you are affected by the attack.
  4. Regardless of if the target is hit, if still in the cone, roll agility (+0) to see if you catch fire.

Also, if the target indeed catch fire, does the extra d10 happens when their turn start, or when it's back to my turn ?

If you have DH2nd and the 3 enemies books, would you get much out of Disciples of the Dark Gods?

Does Disciples of the Dark Gods cover much ground that the the 4 main books for Dark Heresy 2nd edition don't cover?

ooking for 2 players after losing some to scheduling issues, life you know.

Players: 4/6

Special notes: Support Specialist are allowed on a case by case basis and not very often. You might not get it.

ie. We meet up, shoot the breeze and talk mechanics in a voice chat while the action is text based.

The Pitch

The 52nd Vaarintine Rangers, a previously veteran Light Infantry regiment displaced over one hundred years into future by a bad warp jump after conducting a harrowing rear action and escaping the clutches of an ork waaargh on a damaged ship. Processing their loss of all they know and love and being relentlessly questioned by the Administatum has to wait however as duty calls. More troops are needed in Warzone Anterius, they need you.

The game will be part of a Pre-Fall of Cadia living world campaign following a squad from the beat up and bloodied 52nd Vaarintine Rangers Regiment as they are deployed and peered with similar regiments as they defend in the Anterius Sector on Anterius IV. A hive world covered in irradiated, toxic waste.

I've been playing Only War for half a dozen years and have finally gotten around to GMing a campaign myself. In other words, its my first time GMing. New players are of course welcome. I'm going for a gritty meatgrinder "lite" meaning Player Characters will likely die but its Only War, you knew that. Themes wise I plan for it to feel like Band of Brothers emphasizing unit comradery and good tactics along with the usual Only War themes of survival and duty.

What books to buy to begin a campaign and questions on differences

I am looking to start a small campaign in the 40k universe and know there's multiple difference paths to choose from. I was thinking of starting with Deathwatch as I heard it was pretty straightforward to pick up. But do the other games allow freedom to choose the different factions or classes to build a character with? Are systems between games similar where after Deathwatch we might transition to another one with relative ease? We've played DnD, and while by no means experts, are familiar with ttrpg. How do the 40k RPGs work with character progression, items, etc...?

With regards to Deathwatch, what books/source material is the most recent that I should get to start out?

Should I run DH1 or DH2?

I've seen other posts asking this, but I have my own unique circumstances that aren't quite in line with other posters. I'm hoping to get some feedback/opinions from DH veterans to help guide my choice.

Me as a DM: No sugar coating, I'm a new DM. I've run a small handful of modules, mostly 5e and Pathfinder, but nothing extensive. I usually struggle to get invested in the lore/setting, but that's not an issue at all with 40k. I've been drinking this Kool-Aid for over a decade, and I don't plan to stop. I am fairly confident in my DH1 rules knowledge, but I have no issue learning a new system if DH2 seems a better fit.

My play group: Mixed bag in terms of lore knowledge and TTRPG experience. They're all willing to learn new systems, but super crunchy ones tend to bog us down (we do have a blind person who understandably needs help with character sheet stuff). We run more narratively-focused campaigns, and combat tends to be less frequent but more meaningful to the story.

Game setting: I want to run a mystery/investigation style campaign with horror themes centered around a hive city. I want to explore political/bureaucratic corruption, underhive crime and gangs, and hopefully demonic cults or other heretical stuff.

PC restrictions: I'll probably limit my players to the core rulebook, since it'll be this group's first foray into 40k roleplaying. Also no psykers (I really don't want to deal with a psyker literally exploding in everyone's face again).

What are some pros and cons between the two systems? Does either have any significant advantage over the other? I'd appreciate any feedback of any kind!

Question: Can a Thousand Sons Sorcerer pick from multiple Disciplines? Black Crusade

Question above! Is there a limit to what types of powers a Psyker can take beyond if you are God Aligned you can't take the super Undivided Powers or other God Specific ones? Like. Could I take from Telepathy and then Biomancy then some from Telekinesis? Ect? Thanks again! I am somewhat used to 7th edition and 2,0 Horus Heresy where each Psyker needs to be like one discipline

Not yet new to the game

We are in the middle of star wars rpg (ffg/edge) and are planning to play dearhwatch next. I am a sucker for backgroundinfo! Are there any yt lists/channels etc. I should dive into? Can you proud imperial citizens recommend anything for me to consume to become a model warrior for the god emperor!? I'd like to know about my opposition aswell. As much as i can have, without becoming a heretic.

Looking for a map

Hey gang! I'm having trouble finding a good map. I'm running an Only War game for some folks and I'm trying to find a good map for them. They're a tank crew assisting in the assault of a crossroads city called Kharantane. I'm trying to find something that has like... the exterior being farm or pasture with a small to medium sized city in the center. Something they can fight their first tank in. I'm absolutely drawing a blank on searching and any help would be nice!

Wanting to dry a game set in the 40K universe. DH or W&G?

My group is wanting to try a game set in the 40k universe. It is looking like they want to do something low powered. I started checking out the system and it seems that Dark heresy 2.0 is the best fit, but the copies are ridiculously expensive, and I do like having a hardcopy at the table/

Wrath and glory seems good, too, but one of my players heard that the system is very vague and unbalanced, and I am worried that I won't be able to find adventures for it, at least not the low level gritty kind I am looking for.

Striking Scorpions vs Deathwatch Marines

Hello there, I am currently planning to increase a Dark Heresy scenario so that I can play it with my Kill Team fellows. I was wondering how to add a few Xenos flavour in that Scintilla Hive and I imagined placing a Striking Scorpion squad (with secret help from a radical inquisitor) would be a nice challenge.

I checked their profile in Enemies Without, but they look a bit feeble ; with 1d10+8 Damages (Rending) and 3 Pen, they have very bad to scratch an Astartes armour. Saying they roll an average 7 with Rending, they go up to Max 15+3Pen, which isn’t enough to wound a 18 Armour (10+BT) Marine.

Am I missing something ? How should I buff them ? Maybe add just a few melee damages through traits or talents ? I wondered if I could add them an additional Reaction per turn but this will not increase their deadliness.

In tabletop games (at least from V3 to V8) they more or less were able to wound regular Marines.

Looking for players for a only war game using Chivalry Intensifies

Greetings like many of you I am a 40k fan. And as we all know 40k has a great many types of big stompy robot. What if were to tell you that there is a faction that combines both medieval intrigue, Chivalry and courtly love and spices it most liberally with bouts of brutal no holds barred combat against the titanic machines of war and the various xeno giants that trample through lines of unwashed peasantry that make up your average guardsmen regiment.

Now what if i were to tell you of a great injustice? what if i were to say that no 40k rpg currently allows for ending the xenos, the heretic and the mutant most rightly. Never fear young squire for their is a solution! Some enterprising individual made homebrew rules that are surprisingly well done for you to play a Knight House in fantasy flight gamings "Only War" rpg.

Now on to the meat of the topic, I am looking for a group of 3-4 to basically create the Knightly House with me(don't worry the rules included in this post tell us how to do that), Fight whatever gargantuan monstrosity I throw at you, and third make use of the more under utilized social skills only war as well as our natural skills in roleplaying to plan out plots that would make Machiavelli blush.

Old School Index for upcoming campaign.

Thought I’d share this with the group. For our upcoming campaign I wanted a simple analogue way for my players to make notes at the table. This Index has cards arranged by topic or theme. Then colour coded cards for each section. People are Yellow. Vessels are purple, places blue, rumours red and facts in green. A very simple system but will hopefully work for easy reference.

Roll20 availability

Is there a particular reason why the 40k rpgs are not on roll20 to purchase? Myself and a handful of my friends are fans of the story of 40k, and would love to do an rpg session over it, but we all live in different parts of the US.

I know roll20 is seen as the "lesser" VTT, but its the only one I've gotten somewhat proficient in dming with, and I have no want of learning something else like Foundry.

Dark Heresy - Imperial Psyker Ascension to Primaris Psyker

So in my group's long running campaign, I'm now at most 3 sessions of XP away from ascension as an Imperial Psyker. My DM has given me a choice of either Interrogator or Primaris Psyker for the ascension.

From my brief review, I can tell becoming a Primaris Psyker is not about a raw power boost, but more about specialisation. I'm drawn to it because it has some abilities that would perfectly suit my hyper straight-laced Emperor-Botherer character.

So I'd like to get some blunt and honest opinions from players who've played a Primaris Psyker for a decent amount of time:

1: How was the Primaris in terms of raw combat potential against absurd odds?

2: How was it's ability to handle complex political and social interactions?

3: Do you regret taking it over the Interrogator?

4: Which ascension trial would you recommend?

5: Recommended build/skills for a proper heretic hating, God-Emperor fearing Emperor-Botherer Psyker?

6: Is the rivalry/hatred of the Adepta Sororitas required? As a fellow hardline Emperor-Botherer, they... Almost like me.

Would appreciate the input!

DH2 build help

Hi, folks

I'd like to ask for your help building a character.
I'm pretty new to DH2 (I played one short campaign several years ago where I was basically driving an essential "NPC" around) and now I found another group interested in trying the system out.

So I started planning a character in my head but the group decided we'll roll on everything, including our roles, backgrounds and homeworlds.
I ended up with a Shrine world Adeptus Mechanicus Hierophant which is not something I considered before and now I feel a bit stumped as to how to build the character because of the disparity between the skills and aptitudes I got.
I'd appreciate some pointers as to what are some viable paths and focuses for such a combination.

Only War Formation Questions

Had a few questions pop up as I was reading the rules for formations, maybe they were answered in the rulebook, maybe it's gm discretion.

  1. Logically, not every member of a formation will be in cover in the exact same way, so is cover just additional armor for the sake of gameplay or is it that cover only applies should all, or a majority of, the members have their body protected (as the rule book states that all shots that hit a formation will hit the Body location)?

  2. For both hostile and friendly guardsmen formations, do they have their own unique formation orders like the Severan, Ork, Dark Eldar, etc do, or can I just give them the Severan orders because the fluff states that the Severans are very similarly trained and disciplined like the Guard?

  3. Does Righteous Fury on ranged attacks kill one additional member of a formation should it kill one, or does that only apply to blast/scatter weapons?
