Check yourself, before you wreck yourself

Welcome to the 11foot8 subreddit! This is a place where we share the newest videos of any tall vehicle that challenges the "Canopener Bridge" in Durham, NC, as well as stories about the bridge. News, photos, and videos of other unusually low bridges over roads are welcome, too.

RULES

  1. Post videos, pictures, stories, or questions related to the 11'8" now 12'4" or 11'8"+8" bridge in Durham NC. Other unusually low clearance road bridges are also allowed by mod discretion. Posts must show an uncommonly low bridge spanning a road, or a collision of a road vehicle with a low bridge. NOTE: This excludes boat collisions, unusually tall vehicles, or other low clearance obstacles that are not bridges over roads.
  2. Titles must describe the post - include things like date, location, description. DO NOT use meta commentary in your title (e.g. "is this allowed?", "Saw this on r/idiotsincars", etc.)
  3. Be civil and follow reddiquette.
  4. Report problem posts, comments, or users.

If you have any questions about the bridge, we'll do our best to provide an answer.

The canopener bridge is an old railroad trestle in Durham, NC, that originally had a clearance of 11 feet and 8 inches (3.6 meters) over Gregson St. In 2019, it was raised an additional 8 inches and now stands at 12 feet 4 inches (3.76 meters). That clearance is marked several blocks ahead by standard low-clearance signage. North Carolina DOT has also installed a height sensor half a block ahead that triggers a warning sign at the bridge. Despite the warnings, trucks and other tall vehicles continue to hit the bridge regularly.

The "11 foot 8 inch" bridge is located here, in Durham, North Carolina, USA.

There's lots of info on Wikipedia.

Some of the most common questions about this bridge are answered on the 11foot8.com FAQ.

The 11foot8.com website also documents every overhead crash at the bridge since April 2008.

Finally witnessed one in real life

This was in Chicago by Clark and 18th. You can tell it happens quite often by the damage and bits of metal always stuck to the bridge. But recently witnessed me a live can opening.

Disused rail bridge eats orange bus.

Lismore, NSW. Looking at the roof, there seems to be a fair amount of orange peel.

This was never going to happen, bud.

This happened on Wellington Cr. in Winnipeg, MB. Driver misjudged by about 3 ft, I'd say.

This morning in Australia

Thought it fit here as it’s literally 11’ 8.1” (3.6m).

This rail bridge gets hit at least once a month. Sometimes multiple times a week.

Of course it’s peak hour traffic, and one lane each way.
