Rules:

  1. Please, please do not poach plants. Evidence of such results in a ban. Contact your local Fish and Wildlife service or Department of Agriculture for permits if they're available. Additionally, if a plant is growing on someone's property, consider asking the owner about it. Many people are more than willing to give away cuttings.
  2. Do not post about non-cacti. Deliberately posting about non-cacti will result in a warning, a temporary 60 day ban for 2x offenders, and a perma-ban for 3x offenders.
  3. Check the wiki and use the search before asking about care.
  4. No San Pedro ID requests, too often they result in poaching or stealing of cacti.
  5. No posts regarding the entheogenic or spiritual uses of cacti, check out /r/druggardening if you want to discuss such things.
  6. San Pedro growing related topics are OK, please do not report them unless they clearly violate the two rules above.

Best trails or ways to experience cacti and cacti adjacent plants in-situ when in Querétaro, MX?

Visiting Santiago de Querétaro for the first time at the end of July with my family. The amateur botanist and cacti enthusiast in me sees this as a major opportunity to finally experience some of my favorite cacti in situ! However, Im not very familiar with the country as it'd be my first time properly visiting.

Id love to document a lot of plants Ive both come to care for in my own collection, have seen around the sub, and have learned about in my desert ecology class. Mammillaria, Coryphantha, Stenocereus, Agave, Dasylirion and more all come to mind. However my holy grail would be getting to experience Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus in its native habitat!

All this to say I don't know where to begin in terms of finding good spots to witness it all. Im always down for some guerilla botany, AKA pulling off to the side of a road, but it might also ease particularly my mother's anxiety about exploring a new country if I have a particular destination in mind such as a clear trail. Has anyone ever botanized Querétaro and have reccomendations on where to go? It seems a lot of iNaturalist observations of cacti are more Northeast of the city, but im willing to drive out a decent amount. Also totally understand if you don't want to give exact locations to fend off poachers! A general area could work.

TLDR: Visiting Querétaro for the first time and want to know where the best spots to see in-situ cacti are! Trails, national or local nature parks, or even roadside stands of plants work.

Pls help me ID this cactus!

Is this one single cactus or 5 individual cactuses? Should I leave them together or separate them if they are individuals?

And what type of cactus is it???

Thank you! 🥰

Peniocereus lazaro-cardenasii is an Endangered species from dry forest in Michoacan, and possibly Guerrero, Mexico. With less than 2,500 plants estimated, its populations are extremely fragmented. It is threatened by agriculture and ranching. It is rapidly becoming more available in cultivation.

Cactus fell and broke

This is salvageable correct? Just let the big piece callous over then repot? Going to be using a less organic soil mixture as well. Also wondering if I could cut the big piece into a couple different ones for more cactus? Thanks in advance!

Saguaro Germination

Last weekend I harvested two pieces of fruit off of a saguaro. On Sunday I planted the seeds, and today I have germination! I’m so excited to see them grow!

Monstrose cactus spots

Unsure what these spots are? Did I bruise the cactus? Mold? Fungus?

Little info: it’s been inside (live in CO) and last couple waterings were on March 27, then watered again June 7 (honestly it prob should’ve been watered before June 7) I did slightly squeeze the areas (before watering) — you can see the oil from my fingers on the cactus..whoops The spots showed up after the last watering — I just put it outside last weekend.

Should I be worried about these spots? It’s not on any other areas of the cactus…
