Gotta ask Reddit re: SEL90M28G

Really?? My camera reports version 01 of this lens' firmware, and Sony support site shows no downloads.

Has this lens NEVER needed a single update??

Best camera upgrade for me? (glamour and lifestyle portraits and videos)

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new camera as my old one was stolen (and I was thinking about upgrading anyway). Right now, I mostly shoot the following 3 things:

  1. Glamour/fashion portraits and short video portraits in this style.
  2. Lifestyle/travel portraits that also include a lot of scenery/environment
  3. Event photos and videos from parties or other social things.

Things I don't need in a camera

I'm personally not interested in shooting things like wildlife or sports and don't need telephoto lenses or to capture very fast things. Previously I just had a used Canon eos rebel T3i with a f/1.8 50mm prime that I used for 1 and the kit lens which I used for 2. (I almost never shot videos on that camera, mostly due to lack of autofocus).

I also mostly shoot for social media right now. Almost everything I shoot is with the intention of posting it on instagram (with the exception of maybe a couple fashion shoots for brands I've done). Mostly for promoting events or people.

Issues I had that I want to fix with upgrade choice

While the T3i worked well for most of what I wanted (other photographers seemed really surprised I was using such a budget camera), there were 3 problems I had that I want to address:

  1. Better autofocus for faces. This was by far the biggest issue I had before. Using the camera's autofocus for portraits would give me a lot of blurry photos when shooting at wide apertures. I found myself being afraid of opening up too much in an effort to avoid this, but this compromised light and bokeh. I could dial in the focus myself, but on many of my shoots I want to move quickly and have models go through a lot of poses and have a variety of shots to choose from rather than craft something perfect. I'm almost never in a studio, so I'm always trying different compositions/angles on the fly rather than trying to get one particular shot perfect. So I want a something that can handle the focus for me.

  2. Low-light performance. This ties in a little with 1, but I usually don't have my lighting gear with me when I shoot, and I prefer using natural light over on-camera flash when I can. This isn't always possible, but I want to be able to handle these situations with less noise than the t3i could.

  3. Better video capabilities. This includes a lot of things, like good autofocus for video portraits, handling slow-motion, ideally some stabilization (though I might get a gimbal later). I haven't shot a ton of video yet (and have done most of it on phones), but I'd like to shoot a lot more in the future, with the intention of focusing on it even more than photo.

Summary/other notes

I'm posting this here because I have several photographer friends with a7iii's, and I particularly liked this camera. I'm not sure if I really need a full-frame camera - I didn't particularly feel limited by ASP-C before. So I'm thinking of something from the a6xxx line. I'd like to go as cheap as I can while still get something that satisfies my needs and that I can use for years. For lenses, I tend to shoot either around 50mm portraits with wide aperture, or 18mm (though I sometimes found myself wanting to go down to a wider angle than the limit of the kit lens I had before). I'd like to get some pretty decent lenses, but I also never really felt limited by my lenses before either. When I needed more light I was typically already shooting on the prime with 1.8 aperture.

What would you recommend for me? a6100? or a6700 for the video capabilities? The price tag for the latter is a little more than I like, but if that's what I need, then that's what I'll get. The a7iv looks amazing, but not sure if I really need that.

Thank you for the help!

Is losing 10% charge in 30 minutes of normal use expected? (A6600)

Just got a used A6600 from Keh that came with the original Sony battery. After shooting ~30 photos in 30 minutes I lost 10% battery, which feels like a substantial drain, especially since I want to take it backpacking eventually.

This is my first mirrorless/Sony camera so maybe I’m overreacting! I only have the one battery so far so haven’t been able to test with another one.

Wide angle lens recommendation please

I'm looking for guidance for a lens for my Sony APSC A6700.

My use cases include Astrophotography and Landscape.

I currently own a Tamron 18-300 mm telephoto and it's great for animals and birds.

Any ideas are welcome

(I'm hoping this lens will be my second and final lens)

Thanks.

Wedding Gear first timer

Hi everyone, my friends wedding photographer has passed away and I am the only professional photographer they know. I do real estate and small business work. I am coming for some suggestions on lenses. I own a Sony A7iv, a 16mm 2.8 prime, 50mm 1.8 prime, a 16-35 f4.0, and an 85mm 1.8 prime. Do you think this would be good enough? Or do I need a 24-70 2.8 ? It’s a small wedding of about 50 people. Also any suggestions on flash? I never use flash photography I actually hate it, but weddings can definitely benefit from flash as well. Would love some help, thanks all!

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 dg dn art

Hello,

Does anyone have experience using the sigma 24-70mm f2.8 dg dn art, or a 24-70 for photography?

It seems to be a well-rounded lens to have and it would be first lens for my A7III, so I just wanted to get some feelers!

Any advice/opinions would be greatly appreciated!

What is this and how do I stop it

I’m not sure if it was the cause, but my images came out blurry. I’ve seen this many times before but it’s never been a problem.

Can a V60 card shoot 4K 10-bit using the XAVC S codec on an FX30?

As the title suggest, I had this question. I tried googling it, but honestly found some conflicting comments and I'm confused. I'd like to save some extra money and only get a v60, but if I can't shoot 4K on this codec then I might have to go for the v90. Also, I know DCI 4K is only available on the v90 too, but how much different is that mode compared to regular 4K, and do you find yourself recording in it often?

Opinions wanted: debating between Sony 14mm f1.8 GM or Sigma 14-24mm f2.8.

My use case is primarily vlogging and interior art studio videos, I'm finding that my current Sigma 24-70 just doesn't go wide enough to capture the studio space I'm currently in.

Given that the price for each lens is about equal, my question is how to choose between the faster aperture of the Sony vs the zoom capabilities of the Sigma.

Need guidance on a lens for sony a6400

I have an a6400 with a 1.8/35mm lens. Initially purchased this lens for vlogging, as well as some portrait shots. We recently went to the Grand Canyon, and this lens was extremely limiting in taking group and landscape pictures. We are going to Iceland in June, and I need a different lens. Could someone advise on a general all-purpose lens? Goals are landscape photography and group shots. The lens needs to be a range of focal lengths, no prime lens. I do not want to keep swapping lens and I may not have the room to adjust my feet to zoom for certain locations.

Edit: Sorry, totally forgot to mention budget. Would like to keep it around the $500 mark, can go up a bit if needed. I am a newbie with photography and for the most part am going to use auto mode and point and shoot. I am looking at the tamron 18-300mm which is on sale for $600 currently. Will not be doing any video, I have a camcorder for that.

What are Current Prices?

Hey guys, looking at moving on from my parents old T2i to a more portable A6400 for street photos and dabbling into videography later down the line. I was wondering what prices are worth it for the A6400 body, and maybe some lenses as well. The market seems flooded with peak-covid esque prices and scams that undercut by more than $300.

FB Marketplace around my area has bodies for $600-$650, but I don’t know if paying the $20-30 more to but from MPB is worth having some protection warranty wise.

I also have question regarding lenses, where I saw a Sony 35mm f1.8 for $250, but I’m not sure if being confined to one focal length for my first lens is detrimental, especially coming from a 18-135mm.

Thanks in advance, anything helps!

Video Overheating - What are Best Settings to Prolong Capture Duration

Brand new A7600, latest v1.03 firmware.

Shooting video I only get a few minutes before the camera shuts down. I get the option to override the heating warning and use the high temp mode, but that is concerning for longevity.

Can anyone advise what are the best settings to minimise processor usage and therefore reduce heat build up? I am guessing some codec settings use greater compression for example, which presumably requires more CPU.

Thanks

A7IV Owner Making Switch to A7CII/R - Need some lens help!

Hey All,

Sony A7IV owner here with both the 35mm 1.4 GM and the 70-200 2.8 GMII. I do not do this in any professional capacity, I’m purely a hobbyist with some decent glass. I have a 4 and almost 1 year old so these days the bulk of my photos are family photos, and I have found that there are many occasions I leave my setup at home due to the size/weight. Due to this, I ended up buying into the hype and preordering the X100VI due to its size and ability to utilize film sims where I could quickly go from camera to phone without the time suck of editing photos. However, I am worried that if I go that route then I will only ever take my Sony out on rare occasions. Plus, going from Sony AF to anything else is going to be extremely hard.

So I started doing a ton of research into the A7C line that was released, and while I am not overly enthusiastic about either the CII or CR, I think no matter the choice it will be an upgrade just in the AI AF/compact size alone. I find I rarely use the EVF these days and due to being a hobbyist I don’t care much about the dual card capability. I am VERY torn between the two cameras and that isn’t fully the reason for this post, although I will take recommendations on the bodies themselves. Part of me really wants the larger sensor of the CR so I have a lot more flexibility in post, which will allow me to get more range out of a prime (which I’ll get to in a second). The other part of me likes the additional FPS of the CII and easier files to work with. I would definitely buy the grip so the difference in price for me to consider is about $640 between the two.

Regardless of the body I go with, I have a dilemma. I am going to get at one of the Sony G trio (24mm, 40mm, 50mm). I would toss this lens on pretty much anytime I go out with the family, and that is what I would work with. I am torn between which focal length to get and wanted to get some overall thoughts on them.

40mm - If I didn’t already own the 35GM, I would hands down go with the 40mm. However, it seems awfully redundant to get nearly the same focal length, especially given the 35 is superior in most ways outside of size and weight. So the option there would be to sell the 35GM and get both the 24 and 40mm. Not sure I want to give up my GM, but if I had the 40 I don’t know how often I would grab the GM.

24mm - Pros: Wider angle than my 35, still solid for everyday shooting and able to crop in significantly if I go with the CR. Nice for the occasional landscape though they are more limited these days. Cons: Still have a gap in focal length between my 35 and 70-200, and 24mm isn’t a great focal length for the type of pictures I take of the kids.

50mm - Pros: Great focal length for a majority of what my photos consist of these days, my kids. Closes the gap between my 35 and 70-200. Cons: Worried that it may be too tight in different situations, and I would still have nothing on the wide end.

There is another interesting lens in the 24-50 2.8 G that Sony just released, but that unfortunately doesn’t solve my need for a compact lens. Would be a great travel lens, but likely something down the line for me.

Anyone have a similar situation with some recommendations? My gut is telling me to go with the 50mm…

Best Prime lenses for a6700?

Last month I purchased my first camera a6700 with 16-55g and 70-350g and both had served me great. Now I'm looking to get some faster prime lenses for the following purposes:

  1. Astrophotography (specifically I want to try shooting the Milky Way as the summer is approaching), I have Sony 11mm f1.8, Viltrox 13mm 1.4, Sony 15mm f1.4 and sigma 16mm f1.4 in mind;

  2. Street photography lenses: Sigma 23mm f1.4, Viltrox 27mm f1.2, Sigma 30mm f1.4;

  3. Portrait: Sigma 56mm f1.4, Viltrox 75mm f1.4. (I understand that these two have very different focal length and perspective distortion but for the purpose of discussion I put them together)

What would you choose from each category? How's your experiences with these lenses or would you recommend anything outside of these lenses?

Thanks a lot!
