This subreddit is an experiment in online communication, and an attempt to transform science fiction into reality.

A place for collaborative exploration of the continuum that bridges text and art.

A place for talking about art using art.

A place for talking about anything using art.

Here, communication is collaborative art.

OnlyImages is like PaperReddit, except that images connect to each other along two dimensions: version number of copied contents, and reply depth.

Welcome.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to format threads and comments.

ALL INCORRECTLY FORMATTED POSTS WILL BE REMOVED! At the very least, you should scan the sidebar for emboldened text like this and look at this picture before posting.

It is recommended that you use a Reddit enhancement tool so the images can be expanded within the comments.

This subreddit inherits all of the rules of Reddit, and has additional formatting rules which are listed below.

Formatting Rules:

A thread must be a link to an image. No e-text is allowed in a thread or comment, except for what is allowed for by these formatting rules.

The title of the thread is the only place on this sub where you can write words with e-text. The purpose of titling your thread is so that your thread can be found using a keyword search.

A comment must contain only image links, written as a vertical list like so:

[NUMBER](IMAGE LINK)

(one link),

[NUMBER](IMAGE LINK)

[NUMBER](IMAGE LINK)

(two links),

etc.

Each image must be either:

  • a modified copy of one of the images in the thread or comment you are replying to, with modifications drawn on top, or,

  • an original composition created by you.

A comment can contain:

  • a modified copy of the newest version of any image number in the comment chain that starts with the thread's image and ends in the comment you are replying to, and

  • An original composition.[footnote 1]

A comment can contain more than one modified copy.

A comment can contain more than one original image as well.

Numbering Rules:

  • When you post a comment in reply to a thread, a modified-copy must be numbered 0, and an original composition must be numbered 1.

  • A modified-copy should always have the same number as the image that it is a modified-copy of.

  • An original image should always have a number that is 1 greater than the largest number so far in the comment chain you are replying to. (This entails that the number of a thread's original image is implicitly 0.)

  • All image links in a comment must appear in numerical order, smaller numbers being above larger numbers in the vertical list.

  • You can post earlier drafts of a thread using negative numbers. Example: if you posted the third draft as a thread's image, then you can reply the first and second drafts as -2 and -1, respectively.

Q&A:

Q: If I were to reply to your comment with an original image then what number should my image be?

A: Usually, 1 greater than the highest number in my comment. Except, if I my comment was a reply to something that contained an even higher number. Or if my comment was a reply to something that was a reply to something that contained a higher number, etc. In these cases, your number should be 1 greater than the highest number in these earlier comments.

Q: If I were to reply to a thread with an original image, and I see that someone else has already replied with an image numbered *, should my image be numbered 1, or 2?

A: 1.

Q: Why are the formatting rules enforced so strictly?

A: The formatting rules may seem non user friendly. They are. This is a product of Reddit not being designed with the type of communication that happens here in mind. The formatting rules are strictly enforced in order to minimize the difficulty encountered by new users learning the rules. The idea is that, a new user should be able to figure out how to post correctly just by browsing through the comments. It is therefore important that no comment violates the rules, as this would be problematic for a new user who is learning by example.

Tips:

You are encouraged to include the title of your thread in the thread's image.

You are also encouraged to experiment with shrinking the copy in order to create extra clean space to write a reply. Doing this allows for fractal conversation images to grow.

How to make your images:

To make a new image, you can draw an original composition using a graphics tablet, or take a photograph or make a scan of an original composition.

To make a modified copy of an image, you can draw on top of it using a graphics tablet, or you can print it out, draw on the printout, then post a scan or photograph of your result.
