First aid advice is welcome as it would be for a kid or a dog. Do not diagnose or ask for diagnoses. If you would take your kid to the doctor for it, take your pet to the vet! Home remedies can be recommended within reason (e.g. soaks for stuck shed or supplementation changes) but avoid treating or diagnosing illnesses over comments.

Please defer to language like, "ask your vet about this condition," or "your gecko may be showing symptoms of this condition," for example.

5) Don't be a jerk when giving advice. Advice should be constructive.

Sometimes owners make mistakes, and sometimes these mistakes can harm animals. Shaming an owner is not helpful, especially if they're asking for help, and even if the mistake was preventable. Comments being slightly rude may be removed without warning, and consistent rudeness could result in a warn or ban.

6) Tag your feces and injury posts as NSFW. No porn or gore.

Pictures of feces, wounds, lumps, dead animals, and animals in bad physical condition should be tagged as NSFW. Use your best judgement please. Porn or gore is a permaban.

Update on leopard gecko eye problem

My leopard gecko Charlotte went to the vet for a white foggy eye after I got her from a breeder. They said she could be blind or it could get better and to try antibiotic eye drops for a week. The eye drops have very bad side effects and they pretty much said either way she will be fine. I’m worried to use them but I’m also wanting to help her if I can. What do you think?

Getting stuck shed off toes

First time gecko mom, still learning. Binnie has some stuck toe shed. He finished shedding a little over a week ago. We've tried helping him take it off with wet q-tips, setting him in very shallow water (he absolutely HATED it lol), keeping his tank humid enough, but nothing seems to be doing a good enough job. Anyone have advice for really stubborn toe shed? I just don't wanna hurt the little guy.

Possible d3 toxicity? What can I do?!?!

First I will mention, I did take my reptile to the exotic vet who I thought I could trust. But after talking to other people what I was told seems to be wrong, he talked about an obvious deficiency due to him not eating well at all (which I was aware of). He told me to spray my leopard so he can get rehydrated even when now knowing there skin is hydrophobic. He also went over how heat is super important for them when I already had a basking bulb in my cage. (At the time I had a new set up and had not yet gotten a thermometer because the set up I purchased didn’t come with one so when I mentioned that, that’s why he talked about it). I got a thermometer to check temps, and humidity. Nothing was out of the norm still 90f and 30-40 percent humidity.

I don’t have a driver license, and my family won’t drive me to take her to a long distance different exotic vet sense there are none in my area for miles. She was a gift to me when I was 11 and she’s been with me for 8 years. (realizing now that obviously that shouldn’t have been the case). This subreddit has been the most helpful for me so far, she’s actually starting to gain weight now and move a little more. So I thank everyone. I’m terrified to take her back when she’s improving steadily already as it is. But if I have to take her back I’d think it’d be to only put her down depending on everyone’s feedback and advice from here.

From the past week I’ve been scurrying subreddit and forums to figure out what was wrong. She’s been relatively healthy luckily on my end over the years. Over a month ago I had recently gotten a new set up and tank when I was shopping at petsmart to purchase food.

(and honestly the research I did back from when I was 11 is vastly different from now 8 years ago) (this was during the time where calcium wasn’t told to new leopard gecko owners at petsmart etc.)( also during the time people recommended red inferno bulbs) luckily I stopped using red inferno bulbs years ago because it didn’t seem natural to me. I’ve been now trying to improve my lepord gecko husbandry more.

My previous set up was a 20 gallon with a little more elongated air space with less surface area. but I tried filling it with things for her to clime on to use it for the full use. She had a basking bulb, reptile carpet, and for substrate sphagnum moss on the cool side. She was being fed calcium with vitamin d3 (as there was no uvb bulb). Her diet consisted of feeder crickets, wax worms, and mealworms. The petsmart never has dubai roaches as there always dead in there tubs so I avoided purchasing them because of this. During the summer I usually turn off the basking bulb because it gets so warm in my room.

One day when I went to purchase more food for my reptile, I came across a thrive cage display. Seeing this made me think about my current set up which was more of an aquarium set up. This set up had a front opening and was more elongated with more surface area. So I purchased the tank a while later. His new set up consisted of new carpet, new decoration, (besides 2 pieces of decoration) which were the reptile stairs and cool hide). New 100w basking bulb (and one major change a new uvb bulb). He also got new substrate which has pillow moss, reindeer moss, mini basking bark, Sedona stones, and blonde sphagnum moss. He also still had his calcium with d3 bowl..

Maybe about a week later my parents had family staying over so I was essentially kicked out of my room. For about almost 2 weeks, I had been sleeping down stairs. So during this time I wasn’t able to monitor everything probably. She had recently just shed as well. Which was when I noticed her lack of appetite. She also had a little cut on her finger from when she shed. I waited about a week. She still refused which worried me. But then randomly she start semi eating again. She struggled eating for a bit which made my anxiety worse.. she seemed to be okay I managed to get her to eat there and then but very little… until it was just a straight down hill. This went on for about a month I just hoped she would get better.. I addressed it to my parents and all they said was. “Well we don’t want to have to pay for a reptiles bills, especially if it’s something we can’t do anything about. Reptiles are fragile like birds and it’s hard to do anything from here it seems. Let’s give it a bit longer.” At this point I had resorted to force feeding her which I managed to get her to eat until she then started regurgitating her food.

Eventually it got to the point she couldn’t move properly (almost like her bones were stiff), couldn’t walk. had sudden neurological issues; such as flipping over, random head movements, she seems really sensitive to bright lights and is stressed by it. And continuing to regurgitate food. At this time she was still sort of pooping but since she hadn’t eaten in a while properly there was none the time.

At this point it was the last straw and my parents finally let me take her to the exotic vet which in the previous paragraph you see how that went.

They gave her 2 injections and which 2 days after she had a chunky solid big poop. After this I found the information to be false, what the vet had given me. I saw an idea from one sub Reddit to give them softer food. So I tried that and made a disgusting bug juice pie with crickets, meal worms, wax worms, and horn worms.. i still had to force feed it to her sense she could move basically what so ever and was tired. She finally managed to hold it down and swallow it. After that I had spent my entire spring break doing research on more proper husbandry and to figure out what was wrong.

I had purchased repta boost, and leopard bite gel mix. And later that same week a multi vitamin, and calcium without D3. All off of Amazon.

It was hard finding out what was wrong as I didn’t know if she had a deficiency being in a new set up which made her stressed maybe resulting in eating less (sense she had the same set up for about 8 years of her life.) But I also didn’t know if she had the opposite to much of something. Or if she was suffering from an infection.

I had been giving her repta boost orally for about 6 days now every day to help her lethargy. Which seems to be working as she is more responsive. During this time I tried going back to how her other set up was similarly (all I did was basically take out the uvb bulb) as I saw that it was actually super bad for them. And every 3 days giving her the lepord bite gel mix. She’s only had it about twice now but her poops though are more liquidy now and she is pooping more frequently. I also had been sprinkling calcium without 3D as of recently into the repta boost and her food. It seems she is gaining weight steadily but I’m scared it won’t keep increasing.

I still couldn’t pin point what was directly wrong but I came across one reddit post finally with the EXACT same symptoms as my lovely girl. Reddit · r/leopardgeckos10+ comments · 9 months agoLethargic, Rolling Over, and Odd Head Movements : r/leopardgeckos

One talked about it being organ failure. So I started to research about it.. I came across one article after searching for weeks for a source of information- Supplements & Kidney Failure | Wiki | Leopard Geckos Amino

All of the symptoms are similar to a vitamin deficiency but for it to so rapidly change is such a short period of time with the only change being d3 it honestly had to be d3 toxicity as the symptoms are an exact match. (While I will say now I am giving her multivitamin as an extra boost) luckily repta boost has these vitamins so if she gets better I can move her to the other form of multi vitamins the powdered version.

Here are the symptoms of d3 toxicity-

“Hypervitaminousis D occurs due to over supplementation (especially if you’re using both UVB and d3 powder). It leads to calcification of the bones and soft tissue, such as the arteries or kidneys, causing organ failure.

The most common symptoms of d3 toxicity is kidney failure and sudden neurological issues. Others include:

-weight loss -lethargy -lack of weight -frequent urination -dehydration or drinking more often”

After seeing this today I’m honestly so scared and want her to live so much, I’m trying so hard right now.. currently the things I need to know are this if you guys agree with this being the cause. And what can I do!!?! Is this even curable?!? The UVB has already been removed which is when I’ve been seeing improvement luckily after its removal. but the repta boost and repta bite gel have a little bit of d3 still in them.. is this okay? Or should I just stop giving her d3 all together? Do I need to change the way I give it to her? Once every day repta boost, and every 3 days lepord bite gel? Is there even anything with every other vitamin in it like this but without d3?!?! Do I also need to decrease her calcium in take?? I also read in general to not on a reptile forum but about d3 in general about increasing vitamin k intake…

“Vitamin D toxicity is rare, but it can damage your kidneys if untreated. You can lower your vitamin D levels by avoiding vitamin D and calcium, ramping up your vitamin K intake, and staying super hydrated.”

Where can I even find vitamin k and how much do I even give a reptile… please anything to help, my family at this point hasn’t helped me anymore and it seems if I do have to put her down that even managing to get a euthanasia visit will be a extremely difficult ask to convince them of..

If she does hopefully get better how can I make sure to 100% prevent it again? I’ll never be using a uvb again so I’ll stick to supplementals like I always have. Since I used to feed her normally 2 feedings a week. For supplements I read about giving them the all in one multivitamin for adult geckos for the first feeding, and for the 2nd feeding to giver her calcium with d3. And to leave calcium without d3 in a bowl in her cage. Would this be correct? Or since she seems sensitive adjusting this? All help pls..

UPDATE- so I did a bit more research about D3 toxicity in general. It’s so difficult to find any thing related to leopard gecko health in terms of this some things I found not specifically reptile related but about d3 toxicity in general is this-

“first, that vitamin D exerts toxicity by inducing a deficiency of vitamin K”

By seeing this I’m going to try and find some vitamins for reptiles without D3 and that host vitamin k I’ve found one which was ReptiVite without D3.

I found it’s recommend with D3 toxicity to- “ Treatment includes stopping vitamin D intake and restricting dietary calcium. “

now this is a human related source health article while reptiles still should have d3. When it comes to toxicity reasons I find it should be limited, and significant reduced.

“But how do you flush vitamin D out of your system – and can you even do that? Yes, by ensuring you consume plenty of water. This will encourage urination, allowing your body to shed the excess vitamin D and calcium more quickly. Prescription diuretics like furosemide can also be helpful.” ————- I explored more into detail about there poop- she also just pooped right now which prompted me to post this urgent update.

After learning this it makes sense that my reptile is finally improving.. for the past week she’s had a much higher water intake in his diet! I’ve seen this also based on her poop.

Because previously she had lower water intake and lower food intake. She’s had a built up of d3 in her poor system. Her poops were really unhealthy, they were brown but had an inconsistent texture, followed with yellow/orange urates.

After getting her on repta boost, and the lepord gel bites. (Which are both very high in water content). I’ve also been putting a little extra water in the leopard bites to mush them down into the syringe. She’s been pooping almost every single day. Her poop does smell I will say because of the gel and because of the higher water content and gel consistency of her food her poop is more light brown and a squishier consistency. and they are rather really big poops. But her urates are completely white again! Luckily because of this I don’t think she has kidney failure as of right now but I’ll keep monitoring her. Luckily it seems me giving her extra water intake as proved to be just that! Helping flush out all that d3 till she is stable. I’m going to continue seeing how she does for the next week with higher water intake. When I see more improvement, or when I believe to a point where d3 is more stable. I’ll try to tone down the water intake for her, until I can get her eating on her own again!

  • now these sources I have found may have inconsistency and shouldn’t be taken as legit medical advice! Please take it with a grain of salt. It’s only from my observation and current experience right now..

Calcium/Multivitamins Question

Hi all, I'm just wondering when you use calcium with D3 and without D3. Do you use calcium with D3 to dust the insects before you feed your geckos or do you use calcium with no D3? As for multivitamins, do you use it as an alternative when alternating calcium and multivitamins?

I am a bit confused with all of this so please do let me know in the comments when and what they're for. Thanks a bunch!

Picky Eater

My leo will only eat dubia roaches. He was also eating crickets but last week decided they were gross. He won't eat anything worm shaped, meal, wax, horn, black soldier fly larva. Any tips to get him to eat something else? No local shops sell dubias so I have to order them and it can take some time.

Would just like some opinions/helpful tips :) my gecko hasn’t eaten in a week so far

Hey guys! I just wanted to come on here, I’m not sounding the alarm yet but I’ve noticed that my hungry hippo of a gal Ember, hasn’t really eaten the last week. I put roaches and worms out for her and she doesn’t seem to care. I try to feed her she puts her head away. I let a roach run by her, and she chased it until she lost it and lost interest. She’s usually ALWAYS at the first of the tank begging for food. 😂 I’ve started them on an every other day feed a month ago or so, she’s about 7 months. Her enclosure sits at 80-85 on her warm side, her basking at almost 90-95. And her cool side sits around 72-76. And she’s always laying out in sight, never hides. I’ve attached the most recent photo I could find of her enclosure as well. She’s super active at nighttime time; though she mainly circles one area. It’s like the start of a log/she can climb on the branches and go around the tank on a “higher” level I guess. lol and she still always wants to hangout and come out of the tank every night. She hasn’t lost any weight that I’ve seen, I know it’s only been a week so far. Do they get bored? I feel like this is normal behavior but she was my hungry little girl so I wanna make sure I can do anything to help her out before I go to the vet :)

I recently bought an Arcadia shade dweller for my gecko as an upgrade to a lamp, but it says it’s only 15 watt

Hey, got a shade dweller yesterday and it looks very bright and provides good UVB but I’m worried about the temperature. It’s still a little cold here in the mornings and evenings but I also have a ceramic heat emitter. Will the 15 watt shade dweller and ceramic heat emitter be enough heat?

My halogen bulb takes forever to heat up

Probably tagged this wrong but idk what else to put it as. Just wondering if this is normal, yesterday it took 30 minutes to go from 20°c to 22°c today were 40 minutes in and it’s up to 25°c and it’s been at 25° for awhile. My old bulb (not halogen) didn’t take this long to heat up, is this normal, do i have a faulty bulb, is this just a safety thing they did to stop it from getting too hot too fast??? The brand i got is reptituff 75w it’s in a zoomed 100w max dome

Story time on how I got my gecko

i used to have a beardie, her name was mango, me and my brother both got one for my birthday, unfortunately she was exotic and the pet place just treated her poorly, when I received her she wasn't healthy, and I tried to fix that, but then on July 4th I came upstairs from launching fireworks and saw her dead. She is now buried in my backyard, and I have a gecko now who is thriving

Halp!

So I have had a couple Leo's for like six months now and they've been pretty stand off ish. Offer my hand and hold it still and one runs off the other just looks at it.

Well three days ago, the bigger of the two, acts like they are trying to climb out the door. So I open it and offer my hand they climb right out and hang with me for a few minutes till I put him back.

But a few minutes later he asks again and hangs again this time a bit longer. No trouble here.

Now three days later he hasn't eaten since. Is this indicative of anything to anyone? He seems okay little less time out of his caves but he doesn't look smaller or have any obvious issues

Healthy size?

This is my 4 month old, I’m only concerned because he’s been going on an off eating for a while and it’s frustrating. Is he a healthy weight? I have no idea why he’s just lost interest but would these be reasonable factors?: Going from summer to autumn so cooler weather, changing around hides, switching from paper towels to top soil. He also had a bad experience with one of my family members holding him would that cause too much stress?

Gecko skinny?

A customer at my shop abandoned his gecko with me today. I was not at all prepared for a new critter so his tote is temporary until I can hit a store tomorrow to set him up with everything he needs (so please dont judge, everywhere was closed when I got off work and I don't have any spare glass tanks) Previous owner said he's about 2-3 months old. I may be overreacting and panicking but I was told they have been fed only mealworms with no supplements and has been living in a cardboard box since he fought with his tank mate. Is he too skinny? If so what should I do for a feeding schedule or what should I feed to get him a little plumped up?
