Welcome! This community exists to share information about the beliefs and practices of the various ancient Hellenic religions, as well as traditions of modern Paganism inspired by those cultures. Though this is a Hellenic Pagan community, those of any religion who abide by our rules are welcome here.

This community recognizes a wide umbrella of Hellenic Paganism, one that includes Reconstructionist Polytheism, Revivalist Paganism, Neopaganism, Classical Philosophy, Classical Mysticism, Classical Folk-Magic, as well as modern traditions of Witchcraft that honor the Hellenic deities.

Feel free share your practice, ask questions, discuss theology and showcase your shrines.

Rules:

  1. Observe Xenia. Xenia roughly translates to hospitality. That means observing Reddiquette and following the Reddit Content Policy. The policy of Xenia means that bigotry, personal attacks, and attacks on Hellenic Paganism will not be tolerated, and will result in removal of posts and bans, depending on the severity of the offense.

  2. Following the lead of /r/Pagan, /r/HellenicPagan observes a laissez-faire attitude towards posts. Posts will only be removed if they are in violation of the principle of Xenia, which is elaborated on in rules Three, Four, and Five. Otherwise, it is the role of the community to upvote relevant, helpful content, and downvote irrelevant, unhelpful content. The downvote option is not a disagreement button.

  3. No Bigotry. That includes, but is not limited to, racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia. Furthermore, while baggage may be aired regarding negative experiences with other religions, excessively disrespectful treatment of any religion is still considered bigotry. Initial offenses will result in post removal, repeat offenses will result in bans. It should be noted that Hellenic Paganism is not an ethnic religion. All who honor and respect the ancient Hellenic and Roman deities are welcome to contribute.

  4. No Personal Attacks. Keep the discussion focused on the community and what we strive for. While the actions of the moderators may be called into question, keep all discussion centered around the issues. Personal attacks will result in post removal, repeat harassment after a warning will result in a ban.

  5. No Proselytizing. This is a Hellenic Pagan space. Attempts to convert users to another faith, especially one that requires them to renounce this one, will be removed and repeat offenders will be banned. For other polytheistic faiths that celebrate the existence of the gods, feel free to celebrate our similarities, and help us learn through our differences.

Where do I go?

So, I have only recently discovered and have been exploring with Hellenic paganism. For most my life, I've always regarded myself as Agnostic, but finally figured out that rather than having no belief in any deities, rather I only had no belief for "capital G" God. Despite my best efforts, I'm worried that maybe I'm doing things wrong? I've been trying to channel and work with Apollo recently, but I cant help but feel as if something I'm doing could be wrong. I was wondering if anyone knew any sources or where to go online to figure all of this out? Obviously there's here, I just have so many questions I feel as if bombarding this subreddit would be wrong, haha!

How do you view the gods?

How do you view the gods you worship, appearance wise? I know some view them how statues and paintings depict them, but I know some might have differing ideas of how they view certain gods appearances. So I'm curious, how do you view them?

A question

Recently, I've started gravitating towards Hestia. Though I have one problem; I don't have access to fire. What are some good ways to offer and just practice for Hestia that don't involve fire? I already made her a homely little altar by my bedside with things that remind me of home, but I want to know what I could do for her.

Deity reading

I got a deity reading to see if any were reaching out. I got told hera was reaching out to me. So I made a candle with her sigil on it. When lit it had a dancing wild flame and the other was crackling and had a calmer flame. When I asked my pendulum if she was reaching out it said no. So I'm confused if she is reaching out to me or not?

How Does One Make An Offering To Mercury?

I want to create a relationship with Mercury for favor toward my brand new business endeavors, I need the support of the Romano-Hellenic God of trade if I am to survive and thrive in the marketplace.

However, I do not only want favor from Him, I want Him to be happy as other, and happy with me, and I want to know Him well. I've made informal but well-meaning offerings to several Gods in several pantheons including Mercury, but I want to make formal versions of those which is why I purchased the Aeneid, the Odyssey and the Iliad and they have nearly arrived. If there are any books you could recommend for this purpose or general advice I would be grateful.

I know practically nothing about Roman paganism in general, I've grown up in a Western country but I have been totally disconnected from the ways of some of my ancestors in Spain. I don't bar anyone from worshipping practically anything so I do not consider myself a Folkist, but I do believe worshipping your ancestors and the Pantheons they lived in awe of is important.

Greek polytheists in particular should be grateful that they have such a beautiful, powerful Pantheon. Greece was the most intelligent, revolutionary place on Earth for centuries, under the watch of their Gods they beat countries literally ten times their size in the Greco-Persian wars and then conquered them under Alexander The Great despite not being nomadic. Those that have adopted the intellectual parts of their achievements have always been made more powerful than those that didn't.

Strong cultures mean strong Gods, and yours certainly are in the top 5, but considering the conquests of the colonial age being made on the back of Greek knowledge you're probably #1. There really has never been such a civilization, out of a mountainous but fertile land you built a society of unequaled art, architecture, military strength and commerce. I want some of that if it's possible. If there were any doubt about your Pantheon's power it was expunged millennia ago.

Pet Loss

Hi everyone! It's my first time posting here so apologies if I get anything wrong format wise!

I recently lost my pet guinea pig that I've had for about 6 years and am planning on cremating him soon. My question would be if I could put his urn on my altar for Lord Hades? I do not want to be offensive in anyway to him so I would appreciate any advice!

Thank you!

I’m still a bit confused…

I’m still confused on what hellenic paganism is. Do we worship Greek deities or nature deities? Do we worship Greek nature gods? I’m so confused, sorry for the amount of questions :,)

Are there any good bands who have a Hellenic theme?

I've seen some black metal, which I like, but I'm curious to see if there are bands in other genres. All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

This is my feeling, what do you think?

It’s been a few months already since something happened in my life and went away from the gods. I grew very disappointed in the spiritual path as a whole. But, today, my girlfriend said to me that I was being too harsh, that this kind of thing is normal, thar I shouldn’t just throw it all away.

So, I just lighted a honey candle with some cinnamon incense. I placed that alongside some coins, a Magician Tarot card and a hand drawn (tho crude) caduceus. And I just sat there, with Hermes’s Hymn in english as a background. As little as two minutes. Didn’t say a word… Since before, the idea of constantly pestering the gods seems a bit… odd to me, I feel them as very busy beings.

All in all… I feel quite lost. Don’t know what to expect. Don’t know how to feel… and overall feel as they look at me with less than kindness.

What do you think?

🌿🍷🍇 Huge Announcement for Liberalia! Announcing the Liber Dionysi! 🌿🍷🍇

Heya folks, happy Liberalia!

I've been working on this for a while now and am so excited to share it with you! Since I have been a Dionysian I have longed to have a book of Dionysian texts - so I made one! The 'Liber Dionysi' is a compendium of Dionysian myths. It's also word play - Liber means both 'book' and is also another name for Dionysus. Since I have become a Dionysian I have longed to have something like this, something that contains his mythology and structures it narratively.

Here is the link!

(Also, if you do buy it, honest reviews would be greatly appreciated!)

Are there any worshipers of Pan out there? Friends are also needed.

I would like to meet more followers of Pan. I mainly use discord, so I don't mind making a Pan based server. I play Minecraft too and would love to host a Greek/Roman themed server. You don't have to be a follower of Pan to join by the way, I accept everyone and if we get enough people I'll organize fun events.

Announcing: Hellenism 101 Course

Greetings all!

I am wanting to announce a course I will be teaching on Hellenism. I have taught several courses focused on specific elements of Dionysian worship (mythology, festivals, the Bacchae, etc), and yet I have seen a need going largely unmet for Hellenists, especially those who are much newer to the faith.

I have noticed that a lot of folks throughout the Hellenic community seem to have questions about the foundations - how to practice, what philosophies and theologies to believe, even how to define Hellenism. Some books exist, but many are either academic works that aren't written for Hellenists, or Hellenist works that aren't always factually correct.

This course isn't going to tell you what to do or what to think - however, what it will do is cover what we know of what Ancient Hellenists did and thought, what scholars who have dedicated their lives to these questions can interpolate from that knowledge, and how Hellenists today use these sources and interpolations to build religious practices that connect us to the gods.

Overview of The Course

What we'll cover:

  • What is Hellenism?

    • The basics of what Hellenism is, methods of Hellenic revivalism, a history of Hellenism, and a survey of Hellenism today.
  • How do Hellenists Practice?

    • We'll look at both modern and ancient methods of prayer, rituals, offerings, & festivals.
  • What do Hellenists believe?

    • We'll look at ancient texts and modern adaptions of theology, philosophy, ethics, & the conceptions of the afterlife.
  • How do we move forward?

    • We'll look at how to do research, at an introductions to mysticism, how to establish personal traditions, & how to connect to larger group traditions.

Courses will be held in slack Sundays 8pm to 10pm EST - beginning March 17th and going until April 7th. As an 4 week course, this will be $100. This includes access to course materials and one on one consultations about the material. To sign up, email bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com on or before March 16th (ideally before, spots are limited!)

FAQ:

How is this course taught?

Discussions are held through slack, with readings provided before hand.

What qualifies you to teach this course?

In addition to being a Dionysian Hellenist for over a decade now, I am studying Classics, and have some knowledge of both Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as French (All three languages, among others, are necessary for reading all of the scholarly material available on Greek religion). I have also read a lot of scholarship on Greek religion. Also, through the courses I have taught courses on Dionysian mythology, literature, and festivals, I have experience in structuring courses to ensure that the material presented is both accessible and informative.

Above all, if there is a question I do not know the answer to, I do know how to find it.

Why do you charge for courses? What if I can't afford it?

I wish I could offer courses free, however, there is a lot of work that goes into them. There is the 8 hours of instruction time, plus many more hours of myself writing the material, researching, and this isn’t taking into account the years of research and language training that allows me to teach the course in the first place. Charging for the course is what allows me to offer it. (Many religious instructors of other religions are also paid, it's just that their salaries are sourced through the congregations - we do not have those at this time)

However, I am well aware not everyone can afford it. Though I do like to point out it breaks down to $25 a week, I know not everyone can afford that. So, if you cannot afford it but would still like to take the course, please reach out and request an energy exchange.

What if I can't make the times?

As the course is held through slack, discussions are able to be reread at whichever time is most convenient for you.

How do I sign up?

Email bibliothecadionysia@gmail.com on or before March 16th (ideally before, spots are limited!)

so first post lol

ok so i'm gonna go into this with what happened these last few nights (im so sorry it's long)- my patron is Dionysus (i'm trans and i've always related to him, so he's my guy)

the other night i had a friend over seeking a tarot on like a bunch of things, one namely being their relationship (we did two readings), the first one i made a sacrifice (some food and jewelry, i have it all noted down in my book) and was channeling Apllo for (we learned he really likes my friend who wants to be a mental health counselor and is a writer). Eventually we asked him questions through pendulum and he confirmed my suspicions that Aphrodite would have to be contacted to help with the love reading, so I did that (i had sacrificed a bunch to her earlier that day, as i had just gotten out of a good relationship that didn't have the best end and into a new one which is going great) and my friend sacrificed 7 pennies to her at the time. The reading went well, they talked to Aphrodite for awhile and was all good.

the next night, i wanted a reading on my relationship, so i lit a few of my candles (i always burn the purple one for Dionysus. i also had a yellow one burning for Apollo and my strawberry one for Aphrodite.) i did the reading and i was confused at first and then slowly realized that this was not about my relationship now but in the past-

it caused me to have a panic attack and i've sworn off doing readings on myself for a month. my girlfriend thinks Aphrodite is just fucking with me- but why-?

can someone whose been working with her longer help please-?

tldr: Some context of the nights before and Aphrodite likes messing with me- help 😭

is the relationship between the gods rhe same as the myths show them to be?

hi, so ( my question is aimed specifically at hellenistic practice/greek pantheon, btw )

we all know the myths can be crazy, but my doubt is about the relationships between the gods themselves — the hate, the love, the affairs and rivalries. Is it all to be taken seriously or not?

what planted this doubt in my brain was a post I made talking about my experience with Aphrodite so far, and it involved her talking about Artemis wanting to work with me in the future only once to then avoid talking about other deities at all ( she mentioned Artemis chose me before she did ). And I understood the message that I should focus only on her now, etc etc. But someone commented that Aphrodite and Artemis are known to be rivals ( mostly on Aphrodite's side ), so this whole exchange wasn't very surprising.

and this brings other questions, if the relationships are for real, should I not worship them together, once the time comes?

Still getting used to how Gods act

I think this is more like, sharing my experience so far, since I don't have many people to talk to about it<3

I've comminuted with Lady Aphrodite through my pendulum three times so far ( it took me a while to believe i wasn't being tricked lmao ), and she's been incredibly patient with me🙏 I'm very grateful and I tell her that everyday. The first time I talked to her, I asked about other deities, and she said Artemis also planned to work with me, but not now.

The second time, after some questions, I asked about it again, and the pendulum stood strangely still. Not a single movement! I asked if she didn't want to talk about it/wouldn't talk about it, and she said she really wouldn't. It caught me unprepared, not gonna lie; it made me wonder if I was being tricked again – I'm bad at feeling energies so I couldn't make much out of it.

The third time, after some questions, I circled back to that one ( Lady Aphrodite must be tired of me at this point lmao ), and she still wouldn't talk about it. I asked if I couldn't know yet, because I should focus on solely worshipping her for now and I got a very strong yes! Honestly, it made me laugh, all I could imagine was her monopolizing the ‘connection line’ and going like “nuh-uh, this one's mine!”

Ofc, this last part is all in good fun, I won't bother her about this anymore. I also happened to wonder if deities do this? I imagined this was on-brand for Aphrodite, but I would like to know from you guys. Have you had similar experiences with other deities or with Aphrodite herself?

suggestions on devotional acts for Aphrodite?

I've recently gotten into the world of hellenistic paganism because I felt a pull towards Lady Aphrodite, and through some divination, I communicated with her– long story short, I'm worshipping her. I can't afford an altar or physical offerings because I live with very religious parents ( christians ); I've told Her about it, and she confirmed twice that there's no issue in only doing devotional acts for now, since it's what I can do. So, although I've been researching about it, it's always good to ask the community about it. Are there any suggestions of devotional acts for Her? I've done the basics as skin care rituals/moments, "premium" showers/baths, reading about her and meditation on her stories. Anything more I could be able to do?

Resources and Altar Help

I want to preface this with I have been pagan for years now but I have only recently been able to practice openly and have altars and statues and books around the house. Previously, I could only pray. I couldn't use spell jars or leave offerings or anything. I moved out of my mother's house about 1.5 years ago and it's taken me that long to rid myself of the "have to hide everything" feeling. Thankfully my partner is also Pagan (Norse) and has encouraged me to set up things that I feel comfortable with.

Now that I'm in a place where I can freely and openly practice, I need some guidance and help. I would like to find good resource books/websites/sources for Hellenic Pagans and Pagans in general. Things like setting up an altar, understanding my craft such as different ways to incorporate my practice into my everyday life, and good resources on how to worship the Gods and Goddesses.

I also need help understanding if an altar can only serve one God/Goddess at a time or if I can have multiple on one altar. For example, Hecate, Persephone, and Hades. I would like an altar for them specifically at the moment but I'm unsure if I should make 3 separate ones or (because they are all Chthonic gods) I could have 1 altar for all 3. I've never had one before and I want to do it right.

Any help is much appreciated.
