I'm in the market for a car and I really would love a fancier brand type car. I'm absolutely in love with this 2013 BMW X1 Drive28i with 90.5k miles for $11k. I'm a 20 year old female with a bartender salary, with no knowledge in cars besides the fact that I always hear about how expensive maintenance is for bmws, Audis etc. I really would like to spoil myself with this, but I'm also thinking in the long run especially w it being 11 years old. I'll be financing it and paying it off in a 5 year period Please if any one could give me advice. Like hey maybe this is a great reliable model that'll last me a life time and I should purchase it? Please be brutally honest, I don't want to make the worst decision of my life. Tyia!!!
So I need help on a few ends for this one it’s a little bit of a story. I’ll give as much context to help, and please ask questions if it can help with getting an answer. I’m as they would say “up the creek without a paddle” and it’s something that’s caused me a lot of mental anguish as well as potential financial problem soon. So to start the story I bought a used 17 VW Passat 1.8L about a year and a half ago now. Back in April of this year I started having problems when I would accelerate especially at stops it would just shoot up. For example at a stop when I would accelerate it would go from 1000 to 3000 RPM extremely quick and you would feel the car jerk into position. So my buddy who for reference is a certified mechanic, as well at the time he owned a mobile mechanics business ( recently after what has happened he has stopped). So he looked at the car and diagnosed it was either just the spark plugs or the camshaft adjuster. He said we will replace the spark plugs first and then go from there. So he was busy that next week and I so I went to a local jiffy live and got the spark plugs replaced. It ran pretty well after but I had still had the problem but not as bad. So I just kept driving around. Then around come July and the problem continues to get worse. So I had my friend look at again( this story the friend is the same throughout). He looked at it and said that it was the spark plugs and replaced them again for me. So then at the end of September the problems came to a high. When I was driving down the street one morning I was going about 55 mph and started to slow down as I was approaching a yield sign. When out of. NOwhere the car shot up in RpM and then when all the way down to zero and shut off completely. So I was able to get over to the grass safely. After this I called my friend to come give me a tow and to have him look at the car again. He brought it back to my place and looked at it again for me and said we needed to replace the camshaft adjuster and one fuel injector. So I ordered the parts and the next Friday he put in the camshaft for me we were still waiting on the fuel injector. The next weekend we agreed while I was at work he would come and grab my car and replace the fuel injector . He said he needed to replace the gasket injector while he was at it as well. Well in the process he broke the camshaft adjuster and had to replace that, After all these different repairs the car would not even start. He said it was bc the the other injectors would not stop misfiring now and wouldn’t even let the car idle. So I had to get the back to my house and then continue to order more parts. He said to order three more fuel injectors and a set of spark plugs and as well ignition coils. So ordered the parts and then I waited for him to come over and look at it. To make it quick over the next few days he proceeded to t respond to me and any time we would make a plan to meet he wouldn’t show up. So I finally called another professional to do the job for me. He did instructed as I was on what to do as I’m how I was instructed by my friend. He came to me afterwards and was honest and showed me the car would crank but it had a terrible knocking coming from the engine and would not idle for very long without shutting off. He told me that something must be been dropped on the inside and now is rubbing in there as well as where my formed has left bolts loose and wires not correctly put back in. He said that he wouldn’t be able to do anymore and that I needed to take it to a garage. Since then I have not been able to why in contact with my friend he won’t answer any text or calls from me or our mutual friends. So does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with my car or if there’s any legal action I could take against my friend. Any questions tk help I can answer to the best of my ability. Thank you for everyone who read this and who helped me and sorry for the typos my phone was freezing a lot when I was trying to type this
Hi all. Quick question as I am about to take possession of a Hyundai i10 from a parent. Is there any sort of satnav I should look at getting or would I be better getting a phone mount and using an app?
As the above says my car just won't start I've checked the alternator the starter. The battery and it's not in anti theft mode the only thing I could think of would be an oil change would this cause my car to not start? When I go to turn it over to turn it on everything just shuts off I replaced the battery in may of this year any help is appreciated
So I have a 1999 ford ranger and when I’m in the speeds between 35-50 only sometimes does it jerk backwards like rubber banding in a game. It only happens like every other day like it didint happens today but yesterday it did
Ok so my truck just won’t seem to start. It will turn over but won’t completely start. It almost seem like it’s not getting any fuel but it will start up for a little bit but almost immediately starts to die. I can hear the fuel pump go when I turn the key I’m just not sure why it won’t start
I was driving on the highway and heard some light grinding. Decided to exit and go stopped in traffic for a bout 10 mins. Once I got out of the exit traffic it was drastically worse. The grinding turned into knocking and grinding. Though this only happens if I surpass like 40-45. I went up 35. Not a single issue smooth as butter. Any signs of what this could’ve been?
Idk if this is the right place to ask for advice, but as the title states, my wedding ring is in the dash vent somewhere. I put it there while cleaning and it fell 🤦🏼♀️ Should I take it as a loss or is there a way to get it out? It’s only 1k but it’s more sentimental than anything
Dont know what to do (idk if it's a hybrid issue)
I've had the battery drained twice (cant turn on car) due to bad installment issues with a dashcam. After that problem was solved [jumper cables], I thought all was good.
Last night I stayed in my car for no more than 15 mins without starting it, just one press on the starting button (no break pedal) so that i could turn the fan on. After that, I couldn't start the car; it seemed like my battery was drained. I charged my car again using jumper cables, and thankfully it started.
Now I know not to sit in the car without turning it on, even if i just wanted to use some accessories.
My question is: should i buy another battery? or just go to a workshop and ask them to recharge it? or am i fine?
i am clearly a car newbie, please help with grace. thank you
My car stalled on me while driving, I got it towed back to my house to work on it. The car sounds like it’s going to start, but just doesn’t. I’ve replaced the fuel pump, the fuel pressure regulator, and spark plugs, but it still won’t start. The car has compression and the fuel pump runs when I crank it. I’m out of ideas, any help would be appreciated.
The air conditioner is not blowing hot or cold no matter the setting. I have checked every fuse, replaced the power relay, got the blower motor tested and tested the resistor with my multimeter. All of my wiring is intact and there are no signs of corrosion. Any ideas y'all?
Hello all! I have been experiencing a charging issue for awhile now, and I would love some advice on this matter. I've had this car for a few years, but as I used it I started learning more about cars (I knew nothing when I first purchased it. Stupid, I know). But, basically, the car will suddenly drop voltage down to 12.5 (resting battery range when car is off for other vehicles), causing all lights to go dim or slightly flicker, and I can't leave the car off after a few days else the battery dies. I have replaced both the alternator and the battery, and still suffer the same issue.
What's weird is, I spun out a few weeks ago and slid into a ditch, and I noticed the battery was actually charging properly. It never dropped below 13.5 volts, and typically stayed between 14.7-15. But then today I decided to utilize the remote start feature that came with the car, and I got the unfortunate "Service battery charging system" error with the battery light again (the car still started with remote start, it showed up after I flipped the ignition to on).
Is the remote start my problem here? Is it easily fixable or is it a major concern and I should ditch the car (costs too much)?
Thank you to any replies!
Hi everyone....My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee was blowing hot air instead of A/C today....compressor was replaced this summer and fluids serviced at a dealership so it's unlikely to be the compressor, and even when that wa s having issues it just wst getting super cold, it has never before blasted hot air like this with the AC on. (TL;DR version)
Additional details: On my drive to work this morning it was about 50 degrees out and I had the car temperature on 72 with the fan on low, so the heat was technically on, but not blasting. When I left work it was about 79 degrees out, so when I got in the car I switched on the A/C and put the temperature on 65 inside the car and the fan on about halfway and heat came BLASTING out of the vents full force. I figured it was taking a second to switch over from the heat being on this morning to the A/C on this evening so I turned the fan to low and turned the temperature to low. But the heat kept blasting. Turned the system all the way off for a few minutes. Heat was still coming out of the vents even with it off. Tried the air circulation. Hot air blasting. Turned the defroster on and off. Still hot air. Never cooled down at all and felt like the hottest heat even with the A/C on. Tried controlling it manually with the buttons and via the touch screen. Turned the car off and back on at a red light in case it was a weird computer glitch. Still blasting heat. I drove the rest of the way home with the air off and vents closed and windows open because the inside of the car was unbearably hot.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
The other day, I noticed that my AC only kicked on like 15 minutes into a drive, despite the buttons indicating that it was on MAX AC and the highest fan setting. Then last night, I went out and the AC never started blowing, turned it on and off multiple times, adjusted all of the settings, and nothing would happen.
The display reads as if it is on, but there's no sound indicating anything is running, and no air coming from any of the vents.
I'm rotating my wind back caliper piston and it will rotate but won't compress. Any thoughts?
My mom has a Toyota Corolla 2005, and I own a Honda CRV 2005.
I've decided it's too expensive to keep both and would like to sell one. The Honda has 130 000km and the Toyota has 310 000.
On one hand, the Honda has a lot less mileage, but is already seeing some aging. It requires a rust coat (might be too late), brake replacement, and probably more. The Toyota has been well taken care of over the ages and seems to still be going strong. The Toyota also seems to get more MPG and also seems cheaper to repair, but the Honda is spacier and more comfortable.
The Toyota also already has winter/summer tires while the Honda only has all-seasons.
Any thoughts?
2012 Honda Civic LX Sedan, FWD
Got new tyres and realignment earlier this morning. Today I noticed my car jerk slightly forward and back when braking coming to a near stop. I also heard a clicking noise when slowing down to a near stop as well. The clicking noise slows frequency when the car slows down. This clicking noise is not new, but the jerking is. Feels like the brake is slipping or something. There's also a substantial amount of brake dust on front drivers side hubcap, more than the rest. I'm a bit scared to drive this any further.
I got brand new rotors, drums, and brake pads a little over a year ago (when warranty ends which is great)
Does anything I say suggest an obvious issue/solution?
Hi everyone. I’m an absolute car noob so please excuse my lack of knowledge for terms/ parts. So basically when I’m breaking this noise happens (I can’t attach a video but I can send it for someone to hear) for the life of me I have no idea what it is. I’ve taken it to 2 garages, they’ve taken the car for a test drive and found nothing. It’s like a sort of train chugging/ rattling/ ticking sound!? Thing is when I take my foot off the break and I’m just driving normally it doesn’t go once the noise has started it carry’s on, once I accelerate it feels like it only gets a bit louder if anything. I feel like I’m going insane as no one can find an issue. I’ve recently had the brake pads changes but I’m left thinking it could be the discs but surely if it was the garage would have found fault? Can anyone please help?! - a woman losing her damn mind because it’s quite embarrassing too🥲
Does this car have an inline fuel filter? And if so where is it located?
My car has been doing this thing where it just stops accelerating when I’m driving it randomly. It won’t go faster even if I press the pedal. When it happens I just take my foot off and it works after a second or so. I can’t really find a pattern to it although I will say I think it happens a little more when I’ve been stopped and I’m speeding up. But it’s pretty random. It’s not always an issue, there are days where it happens more times and days where it doesn’t happen at all. This has been an issue for around two months but I have no idea what is wrong with it.
I can't break the lock open because they're won't be any spare parts of this model of car. Since I'm the only one with this car in my whole country (at least according to a car make/ model count analytic website in my country). How might I open this, what chemicals should I use?
Note: I have tried the Citroen, Chemistry and Lock Picking subreddits, but all saying to refer to this subreddit
Hey everyone, I'm really dumb and bought myself a "Wrummer" for my car. If you don't know what that is, it's a device that plugs into your OBD2 port and reads your RPMs and connects to your phone and plays a loud engine sound so you can play it over your speakers.
I'm getting an actual exhaust for my car, but in the meantime, I found this device to prank one of my friends into thinking the exhaust sounded a whole lot different than what he had expected.
Anyways, it was a cheap little thing to I thought what harm it could it do. Right?
What I'm getting at, and what the title of the post is, that device, as soon as I plugged it in, showed a "service shifter" error, or something involving the shifter. At the same time, throwing the engine light on.
I immediately unplugged the device and tried restarting my car but the engine light won't go back off. I've also driven the car over 20 miles since then and the car and the transmission shifts and works just fine in automatic and also in manual (paddle shifting) mode.
I've read that a way I could try resetting the engine light is to unplug the battery and plug it back in and see if that works, but I have not gotten around to that just yet. Would this be the only thing I can try to do?
I also, for some reason don't even get any error message when i start my car. You know how usually on cars it tells you what the error is, or at least a code for you to look it up? My car just turns on, engine light comes on, and the car beeps at me a few times.
I really don't want to spend the money on a mechanic to diagnose it is there's a simple way to reset this problem since (I believe) nothing is broken.
Any input is accepted, I should have never gotten that stupid device in the first place, but here we are anyways.
